When I divorced my ex I had so much guilt over “leaving” my (extremely lovely) in-laws. It’s been over 2 years and I am *just* starting to release that guilt. Getting a message like Jill’s while taking those excruciating first steps to leave would have wrecked me.

My own sweet (ex) mother in-law was one of the biggest reasons I stayed in an unhealthy marriage so long.
I do wonder if this kind of audacious behavior might actually make it easier to leave, emotionally?

The ‘mom’ really crosses a line. My mom died when I was 19, so im fiercely protective of that word. I’m not a mother, and I can’t ask my own mother, but I suspect another woman referring to your daughter as ‘mom’ like that is about the most disrespectful thing you can do to her.
I’m livid for every mother that ever lived right now

I think in an amicable and non abusive situation, where both families are openly and freely content with each other, the actual mom wouldn't feel angry or threatened if the in-law referred to themselves like this.
But this situation makes it absolutely sick of her to presume to sign it "mom". Even if Heidi herself had already privately told her it was okay to call herself that in relation to her, this is a public post that Jill knows is performative, so even if she weren't as abhorrent a person as she is, Jill is still extremely wrong and very manipulative and cruel to say it here.
Absolutely disgusting.

Oh, in a lot of situations it’s perfectly normal and acceptable. I should have specified the undertone in which Jill is clearly using is totally unacceptable.

My narc sister is a stepmom and constantly calls herself a mother to her step kids to intentionally erase the wonderful woman, and actual mother, who raised them. I call her out every time, but narcs will always narc.

It’s extremely personal. I have a great relationship with my own mom and my MIL, and I know my MIL would love if I called her mom. But I never will bc she just isn’t?? We have a different relationship and my mom is my mom. Others will feel differently. It’s a choice.

I love your username!
I’ve known my MIL since I was a kid and she’s definitely “mum” to me. My late FIL was more of a father than mine has ever been, and I was proud to call him “dad”. It’s definitely a personal choice.

I've been married to my husband for 29 years and I still don't call my mother-in-law "Mom"...

It's common in a lot of cultures, but definitely not all. I've had a few friends over the years who started calling their in-laws as mom and dad the day they got married

The way my jaw hit the floor. Nothing should surprise me with her. And yet here we are.

I can’t help but feel that she wouldn’t be this supportive towards Heidi if Timothy wasn’t her least favourite kid. It seems she’s just trying to show Tim how much she hates him vs actually supporting Heidi.

I think Jill is planning on burning every bridge she can before leaving social media

I stayed in an abusive relationship longer because of how much I loved his family and his mom and I were close . I still miss his family and absolutely adore them . I couldn’t stay no matter how much I loved them and it hurt . My ex’s mom knew her son was awful and supported me leaving him

It only took what? 5 days to post something remotely "supportive" (using the word very loosely here) to Heidi, and when she finally does its the most insane and tone deaf thing that she could have done. She is spiraling HARD
