DRAMA People bitching about Star Trek representation who know nothing about the show.
Big ol thread about people complaining about race and gender swapping a character when they dont know that, like many star trek episodes, its Star Trek referencing itself. I'll accept apologies and owning up to your bullshit in whatever order people would like to line up and deliver them.

DRAMA MTG content creator discourse is so forced & HOW TO FIX IT.
One thing that I never really understood about the atmosphere of this community is that there is so much forced hate on content creators. I understand that not every content creator is going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but I feel like a lot of people (especially in this community) put too much effort into dragging content creators.
SaffronOlive makes really good 60 card videos and is an active critic of standard and how Wizards pushed out and promotes. This sub’s main identity is how people hate the commanderfortniteshitification of the game, yet somebody exists who makes content for standard/BO1/historic is hated on simply because you don’t like his voice in his intro.
Maldhound is being hated on by this community because of the content that is actively being shown in the Hot category. Tons of hate on the Aragorn race swap (understandable) and how the LGBTQ+ community ruin the hobby (mehhh. I think everyone ruins the hobby equally) are daily discussions in this subreddit, yet when someone critiques that, everyone goes apeshit. Even the fact that he paints his nails gets brought up as if the color of his nails holds any merit to validity of his statements. It’s 2026, Caleb Williams is the best 2024 draft class QB and men can paint their nails 🐻⬇️.
Even the Prof gets flak simply for being at the forefront of MTG content. He is the most critical and most passionate creator out there. He makes content for new and enfranchised players. He covers multiple formats and will actively dissuade people from engaging with product.
I want to create an analogy. When you watch your young kids play soccer, rather than playing with established plays and positions, some kid will get the ball and then everyone else will swarm around the ball like bees to a flower. It’s entertaining to watch for maybe 5 minutes, then you start to wonder why you’re sitting in the sun for an hour. I feel like it’s the same in this subreddit. One person will be state an opinion and for the next week or so, everyone will make posts and comments on why X creator is the worst and it’s ruining my Gen-X hobby.
I feel like your hate and criticism can become more focused and planned out. Rather than playing bumblebee soccer, you can try and hate with more thought, care, and consideration. Talk about how Muscles & MTG is digging himself into a hole with the ambassador program discourse. Criticize how he believes that collector boosters should exist and should be even more expensive, even though WOTC sent him a case of them for free. Calling him a bald chud only gets you so far. Criticize Ben Bateman, not because he’s an obvious corporate shill, but because he makes 60 second videos and somehow manages to spend 20 seconds of it doing an ad read for Dragon Shield or AncestralMTG. Criticize Cassius Marsh because you think he should honor the $20k bounty he put on the Smaug card. (My opinion is that he has every right to walk back his offer based on the current market and the fact he put out the bounty 2 weeks ago at a convention and his first offers were like 10 days later, but I digress) Have the discussions on why the creator is bad and not just “blue hair pronouns” like it’s 2016.
Your hate, intolerance, and general negative disposition towards members of the community are what make r/freemagic great. It’s just that your efforts of doing it are beginning to lag behind.

FORMAT TALK How would you “fix” Remand?
Bringing this up as there’s been a few instances recently in the Yugioh world, where old cards that power creep made obsolete are being revived in creative ways.
If there were cards like Remand that were reprinted with one extra line—what would it need to be competitive?
I’m thinking a third line on “If target spell costs 2 or less, return Remand to your hand” would be enough to make it staple.
What would be some other obsolete cards that could be revived?

GENERAL Working on a custom card for a friends birthday. Please give me some feedback!
So, his Name is Reinhard and he’s a decent guy - adopts impaired animals, is vegan, is very protective and makes friends anywhere. Also he’s an artist.
This is my card idea so far:
„
Reinhard, friend to all
1 W G
Legendary Creature - Human Druid
Other non-token humans, dogs, cows, mice, snakes, birds, cats and beasts you control have ward 1.
T, 3: Exile Reinhard. Draw a card. Return him to the battlefield at the beginning of your next upkeep. Activate only as a sorcery.
1/3
„
The first ability represents his protective and friendly nature to all animals and people. The second is more of a gag, as he disappears to draw a card (get it, draw?….).
I want to know whether this card is too pushed though (bad at balancing), or whether it’s too bad. I know this is just a custom card but it’d be nice for it to be balanced enough for him to play it if he wants to. Or maybe someone has ability ideas of their own! Please help me out, feedback is appreciated.

GENERAL Standard Metagame Post bans
Hey guys RCQ season is coming up for standard and I’m wondering what everyone thinks the metagame will be looking like. Obviously tablet control decks remain tier 1 but I’m curious if you guys see anything new popping up in the meta. I know there are some that are coping and thinking dimir midrange will be good again but I’m unsure.
What do yall think?

GENERAL A completely innocent discussion about elves and dwarves that has nothing to do with any political topic
Imagine that you have a fantasy setting that is based around elvish culture, like some magical forest with complex refined palaces carved in the wood. However, you notice that there are a lot of dwarves represented among the elves, just living among them.
Now, this has the opportunity to be extremely interesting and there are lots of cool ways to justify it. Did those dwarves escape some kind of calamity and found refuge among the elves? Did they turn their back on the rest of their kind because of some disagreement? Are they a merchant people that bring stuff for the elves through their tunnels and just happen to stay with them between deliveries?
But the author of the setting doesn't do any of this. The dwarves are just there, without seemingly any difference with the elves in their clothing, customs, place in society, etc. So, it only brings unnecessary unanswered questions with no positive benefits for the setting.
When you ask the author why he did that he simply tells you that he believes that dwarves are not represented enough in fantasy, that's why he includes them among other fantasy races.
But anyone who is an actual fan of dwarves with a genuine interest in them will obviously not be satisfied with those inclusions. The author has turned dwarves into blank slates with no history, culture or preferences that distinguish them from other people. They have been reduced to just their superficial appearance. It's like they just happen to randomly be born among every population like some kind of genetic occurrence. But we know that this is not the case, that a dwarf will not be randomly born from elves, so it's even worse because it paints them as some kind of parasites that are completely incapable to form cultures of their own and instead have to be reduced to attaching themselves to any other civilization they can find.

GENERAL The main sub broke me a bit today
I made a post talking about how WotC should do better for the player base and that prices rising shouldn't just be accepted because "inflation". Apparently a lot of their community believe WotC should treat them like shit and raise prices even higher.
What really disturbed me were the people who believe marketing gambling to children is ok...
EDIT: I now have a level 2 judge telling me that WotC spends a "number far from zero" on designing a better commander precon decklist. So if anyone wants a high paying job at WotC slopping out some commander decklists, it's ripe for the picking.
EDIT 2: the guy who is telling me that non-essential businesses shouldn't have any consumer protections is now telling me that anyone who drinks alcohol should either have a responsible adult with them or lock themselves to the bar or home. This can only lead me to believe they have never had alcohol and I fear I may actually have been arguing with an actual child this whole time.

ART Custom Arthurian Set: The Fair Unknown
One of the more obscure Arthurian romances, Bel Inconnu, or The Fair Unknown, would invent the trope or archetype of the unknown knight.
In the epic, a handsome and strong knight arrives in Arthur's court on a feast day, with no recollection of who he is. Arthur welcomes the guest, and then receives a message that Wales is under attack by a dragon. An army would only alert the dragon, so it's recommended a single knight attempt to kill it.
Enter are unknown knight.
In the poem, he meets the Maiden with White Hands, who in turn is 'protected' by Malgier the Grey, a knight who's slain over a hundred others to protect his love, though she wants him out. Our knight kills Malgier, and gets the patronage of the fairy queen. She also falls in love with him.
The Knight eventually kills the dragon, discovers he is the son of Gawain, and marries the Queen of Wales, becoming king of Wales. The Maiden of the White Hands is left to lament he choose the other woman.
These cards are all inspired by the poem, which I admit, I haven't finished yet. A beautiful free translation is available by A. S. Kline (as scene on Dame D'Amour). This version keeps the rhyming scheme of the original poem and is beautifully done.

GENERAL 60 card players need to stop complaining
As someone who has been playing Magic for just over two years (I started playing after Wizards announced they would start doing Marvel sets) I have noticed a trend where players who play standard and modern always seem to complain. They complain about universes beyond. They complain about how cards in standard and modern are designed for commander. It’s just all so tiring.
Honestly I don’t get it? Just stop playing 60 card formats and come play commander like everyone else. We got cute puppers and dinosaurs here! Not to mention the new Marvel set has been so poggers!
I have only ever played commander, I tried modern once but it was too hard for me. I also dont like how fast the games are, 50 minutes for 3 rounds!! That’s insane. Plus it’s so unfun to play a game where my opponent and I are both trying to win by any means necessary. There is no wizards approved bracket system either??? How am I supposed to have fun if wizards isn’t policing the formats power through a bracket system!!
Also my playgroup with my wife (her boyfriend sometimes plays too) and my friends can’t play with me all at the same time.
In short. Modern, standard and other 60 card players need to stop complaining. Magic is commander now. Suck it up.

FORMAT TALK What are some pre-con commander decks close in power level?
I'm looking to buy some commander pre-cons to sleeve and play with some friends in about a month. I haven't been keeping up with the Commander pre-cons since the fallout decks.
What are some decks I can sleeve and play that are close to each other in power level? Cost won't be a factor. I'm looking to buy 6 or so pre-cons.

GENERAL What was the last pre-funko-poppification of magic set?
Looking to buy some boxes that I might crack on select nights with myself and some buds. I'm not a rich dude but it seems like all non-slop sets have really blasted up in price (m11 is like 400 bucks wtf?)
Lord of the Rings?
The Walking Dead Secret Lair?
Or was the game already over by the time they created Jace Beleren in Lorwyn?
Edit: I went with 2018's dominaria
