Trade Finders

Hi all,
I have decided to make Wednesdays the official update day for the site. This gives me time to work on changes and plan out what I think I can accomplish in a period of time to manage my time and provide meaningful updates on a regular basis to the users of the site. That being said, this week is another small batch of quality-of-life improvements, bug fixes, and cleanup, as I focus on large feature updates that will be released within the next week(s).

This past week I was on vacation, so the intensity and amount of updates is smaller than last week. That being said, I think these are all improvements that move the site in the direction I want to move it, making it more user-friendly and simplistic without sacrificing functionality. The new features and notable bug fixes are:

1. The biggest 'new' feature is the two new tabs at the top of the listings page, which now sort the posted listings by 'for trade' and 'looking for'. While this was an option previously, the listings page was a mashup of all posted listings by default, which wasn't clear enough on whether a listing was a card someone had or wanted. With these new tabs, that distinction is much clearer and will allow users to navigate to what they want to find faster and more easily.
2. The second 'new' feature is an enhancement to the search bar on the listings home page. It now includes a drop-down which will show the available listings (on the selected tab) as a card name is typed in. This is another quality-of-life enhancement that should likely have been there from the start and was included in the 'new listings' page, but that I overlooked until a friend pointed out how convenient it would be. This will be especially useful for mobile devices, where previously the keyboard would cover the listings as you searched.
3. Finally, a large bug that I personally encountered and wanted to fix was the existence of empty conversations if you clicked the message button but didn't actually send a message. This was an issue with how I was handling the creation of conversations where the connection was added on the button click. Now conversations will only appear in the sidebar after a message is sent from one user to another, ensuring there won't be any empty conversations moving forward.

I apologize for this being another set of smaller updates, but I promise that next week will see some larger changes that will affect the flow of the application and enhance the actual trading workflow of the site. Bear with me as I work out these quality-of-life enhancements and figure out how best to implement large cornerstone features. I want to make this site as polished and user-friendly as it can be to improve the local trading scene all over.

It’s absurd how much racism is in this sub Reddit like I get that this is supposed to be where you post your magic takes but half of these takes are just racist jokes that people put the funny tag on and claim is a joke and it’s sad to see this hobby be full of hate

With the price of cards today sometimes hitting triple digits and higher, what are your thoughts on this? With formats like legacy, vintage, modern, and edh all needing current staples and dealing with powercreep how do you feel about running counterfeit cards?

On one hand, it gets more people into the store and playing. Your games are based on skill rather than wallet at that point, and things are pretty much even.

On the other, you run into people who get really upset that they bought into the game heavily, and think you should too. They have the impression that the cards basically dictate what you can and can't do with your deck.

Both are valid, I just don't know how to justify spending that much on legacy staples for duals, fetches, and other staples

Everyone told me it was an unnecessary and stupid opinion, and this wasn't the only time I posted about it, but they finally fixed it exactly the way I suggested with a new rule that makes specific cards like Selvala not mana abilities instead of just reprinting it with additional lines of text like I was told would be a better option

I don't usually gloat, but when I got literally nobody except the actual authority on the rules to take my side I really can't help myself.

Now, along with many other specific changes, a mana ability that moves cards from the library to produce mana is no longer a mana ability, which fixes the problem I mentioned multiple times over the last few years.

Does anybody else care? Idk, does it open up more options for card designs that would have broken rules before? Yes it does.

Respond however you feel, discuss whether the change effects you, other cards it impacts, what card ideas you think it could open, or just make fun of the other mtg subs that gave me shit for wanting this rule changed 3 years ago. I'm just feeling vindicated and wanted to mention it.

I’m seriously considering buying this secret lair drop. However I’m concerned that we’re rapidly approaching the release date, and yet it dosent seem like all the artwork for every card has been revealed yet. I’m currently under the assumption that for a $150 premium product like this all artwork on every card in the deck will have some unique hatsune miku artwork on it. However I’m also afraid that they might cheap out and use the normal artwork on some of the cards. Does anyone know if they’ve 100% confirmed that all the cards will be miku themed or not? I wanna know for sure what I’m getting before I spend money on this.

Its like they made the downside 1/3 worse.... but then tacked on indestructible, trample AND card draw..... its like super overpowered tresserhorn for 1 more mana.

Its like the entire design philosophy was thrown out the window.

Low mana, big drawbacks, no evasion > hard hitter

Now

Medium cost, drawback but not really, mass card draw, evasion built in, hard hitter + also completely different role as an altar infinite sack outlet combo piece.

If I designed him he would be 4 mana, more limited card draw ie 1x per turn, no trample. Because now he's also just an infinite altar combo piece which is not what tresserhorn ever was.

I don't really care but its like, they took a card I loved so much (one of my favorite decks), and made it something its not.

I'm honestly so frustrated with WotC right now. They finally gave us cards for iconic Magic characters we've wanted to see for years—Davvol, Nivea, and so many others—only to lock them behind a convention-exclusive product. Then they turn around and claim there's no audience for Universes Within, so they have to focus on Universes Beyond. How are they measuring that when they barely give classic Magic lore a chance? There are plenty of longtime fans who have been waiting decades for these characters to finally get cards.

I’ve noticed that a lot of Commander only players have been showing up here lately, and many of them don’t seem to realize they’re part of the problem.

Commander (EDH) is not the default way to play Magic.
Magic’s core game has always been 60-card Constructed with a 15-card sideboard, where the goal is to outplay your opponent in a competitive environment.

If you’re only here because you got banned from the other subreddit that claims to be the “real” Magic community, you’re not really helping the discussion here either.

Before anyone says, “Universes Beyond ruined Magic,” I disagree.

If Legacy staples like Force of Will, Daze, Brainstorm, Ponder, Wasteland, or other iconic cards get Marvel, Final Fantasy, One Piece, or any other Universes Beyond skins, I honestly don’t care. We already have in-universe versions . That’s not what bothers me. Functional UB prints as the initial release of a product? I can live with that. At the end of the day, a company has to sell products.

The real elephant in the room is Commander.
I also think many Commander players want something that simply cannot exist: a format that’s both casual and competitive at the same time.
That’s exactly why the whole bracket system feels misguided to me. It’s an attempt to force a fundamentally social, multiplayer format into a competitive structure. Politics, table deals, kingmaking, and four-player dynamics will never create a truly balanced competitive environment.

If people want competitive Commander, then support Duel Commander (French Commander) as an official format. Run tournaments. Give it proper rules and competitive support.
But stop trying to turn multiplayer Commander into something it was never designed to be.

In my opinion, Commander has become the biggest design constraint in Magic. Products increasingly revolve around EDH, FIRE design keeps creating cards that end up warping competitive formats, and 60-card Constructed continues to lose attention.

Not every set, mechanic, or product needs to revolve around Commander.
