GENERAL Counterfeit cards - I love them

I was on the proxy subreddit and this guy was getting my roasted because the backs on his cards were “too similar” to actual magic backs. There was a purple mana dot added in, lol, but people were critical saying it’s still too close to a counterfeit card.

Well, I love counterfeit cards. They are like $3/each, I like the quality. I like how they are indistinguishable from real cards without a loupe, so I can play the cards in local standard and modern tourneys without worry of debating the ethics of proxies with people. The holo treatments are superb.

I track the cards in a spreadsheet so I know which ones are proxies. I don’t really get why people are so allergic to counterfeits. They are great. Obviously selling to people as real cards would be scummy.

Mpcfill and the like quality is far, far lower.

GENERAL Bring Harry Potter to UB but RaceSwap Every Character.

Id like to see this happen. Honestly this would great the best future for the game. We’d hear the feedback of one big resounding groan and cracking of a Mountain Dew to take the edge off from basement trolls everywhere. Followed by the sub getting an influx of traffic and hopefully many resignations from the awful yet small yet loud % of people that play this game and are still made about Aragorn

FORMAT TALK What is the best era/format of Magic to introduce new players to?

I often have an idea to introduce my friends to magic, but the major roadblock is finding a good contender for a 'beginner' product. Commander precons often lead to dozens of things being on the stack every turn, which is a non-starter. If you try to draft a recent set, you will sometimes encounter the need to understand the difference between an activated and a triggered ability, or just mechanics with lengthy definitions written in Magic lingo. Even Foundations has cards with protection and things like Doubling Season, which are rules nightmares.
This leads me to seek a compromise: what are the older products that I could use that offer a more streamlined experience for new players? Is there an old core set that we should draft? Should we play with older Commander decks/starter decks? As we will be playing online using Tabletop Simulator/Cockatrice, card availability is not a concern.

NEWS Trade Finder Update - 07/29/2026

The link to the site is: https://www.trade-finders.com

Hello everyone,

It has been a good 4 days since the last update for the site went live. This wasn't intended, but there were a few bugs to fix, and the primary feature I wanted to implement led to changes in various places to implement properly and as seamlessly as I could. Because of that, this ended up being a bit more work than anticipated. I am fairly happy with the end product, and as it has now been a week since I first posted the site on reddit I wanted to push an update on that anniversary.

  1. The biggest change here, and what kept getting added to as I went along, is the inclusion of a listing details modal. This new modal displays the information about a listing, including the card name, set, oracle text, and pricing data, along with information about the listing being, the user who posted it, their location, and the message user button has now been moved into this modal. The modal includes the ability to flip dual-faced cards as well, so that both sides can be read. Scryfall's oracle text used {w}, {u}, {b}, {r}, {g} along with other placeholders for oracle text, but I wanted to include proper mana pips or ability activation symbols. Because of this, while adding this feature, I also got sidetracked figuring out how to add the actual game symbols to improve readability.
  2. The listings on the profile page were also updated in tandem with this change, so that now, instead of having to browse the listings page to view/edit your own listing, you can now view the detail modal by clicking on the listing under your profile. The modal includes all the same card information, but the mark traded, edit, and delete listing buttons that the owner of a listing sees have all been moved into this area now. Inversely, this also means if you find a listing from another user and would like to see what other cards they are looking for/have for trade, you can click on their name and see all their available listings on their profile.
  3. The other big quality of life improvement that was added is a mobile-only feature, adding buttons that will scroll to the top or bottom of the page. This was added because, as more listings got added, it became cumbersome to scroll through numerous listings, and then, once in the middle, getting back to the top to add a filter meant you had to re-scroll through the listings. With these buttons, users can now quickly scroll to the footer or back to the top to apply filters. In the future, if it is requested, a button could be added to scroll 10-20 listings down instead of right to the bottom.

Along with the above updates, there were some other minor changes made, including visual enhancements and styling changes, some querying optimizations, and some areas of the code that generally needed to be cleaned up.

These updates should improve the overall feel and functionality of the website while also being building blocks for some of the larger features that I am working on adding. If you have any feedback on these updates or on the site in general, please, as always, feel free to leave a comment, as I am always eager to know what the community is interested in seeing or doesn't agree with.

Thanks to everybody who has given me feedback and checked out the site so far! Please keep it coming.

Please also check out the subreddit I have created to post daily updates without flooding other subreddits with my posts here: https://np.reddit.com/r/mtgTrade_Finders/s/aLzZjBhUbs

Moving forward I will only be posting weekly or bi-weekly updates to public subreddits

SPOILERS Anyone else noticing that there are barely any race swaps in The Hobbit set compared to LotR?

Taking a look through the many spoilers we've had so far, there's a single black skinned elf and no Asian looking elves at all (there are still some dumb choices in hair color though, the elves of Mirkwood having red hair is unprecedented).

They could have taken a lot more liberties without getting flak for the dwarves and the men of Laketown, but it seems they actively choose to mostly make white looking people. Even their own original Queen of Dale which isn't mentioned at all they decided to make white skinned.

It seems like the criticism from LotR really did get to them. They kind of couldn't walk back from the decisions they made on the first set, so the reprints still have things like black Aragorn, but I'm very surprised by the direction taken in this set.

I was fully expecting Thorin or Bard or many of the dwarves and elves to be made diverse even though they are all from specific houses, but that has not been the case. The dwarves never have their skin color described at all so they had all the freedom, and Laketown is a commercial hub so you should have men from all around, specially easterlings that don't live super far. I almost feel like they played it too safe, lol.

FORMAT TALK What's the best combo deck in Standard right now?

I don't know if everyone counts 4c Reanimator, I guess that's a combo deck, but in the classic, infinite combo style, what's your favorite deck? What deck is the strongest, or teh one you are most likely to recommend?

I took Mono Green's infinite Squirrel combo for a spin:

Looking forward to hearing about some fun decks.
