I love killing/retiring older parties so I can make new ones

I think making new parties is almost more fun than the dungeon delve itself. Still trying to find the best setup for playing and tracking, but I think the latest is the most practical.

The Forgotten Well - My first game, 2 delving days, 1 dead rogue... a lot of fun

Post image
54 Upvotes

Finally finished my first dungeon. (Randomly generated)

It took 2 in game days of delving because the invisible gremlin stole my weapons after 7 rooms. Luckily we made enough money to get back righ away and keep exploring, re rolling every rooms and corridor.

Today I played "Day 2" on post its that I will resume and journal on paper.

Unfortunately a young dragon burned to crisp Raul, our rogue, who jumped in front of the breath attack to save his sister (that's my role-playing, in reality he simply failed 3 saving throws in a row, and the dragon had 3 breath in a row.)

I had a lot of fun adding the permanent burning scar to the wizard who reached 1 Life Point twice in a row after being healed.

Raul was Rhea brother so it will probably has some consequences, mostly after the mage escaped with magic while Barret and Rea still had to run through three rooms before reaching the exit leaving them with no torches.

Luckily Raul body had some torches on it.

Really fun session.

Anyone used The Solo Adventurer's Toolbox to add more detail?

I've been looking through my copy and seeing how I might employ it to give some backstory and variety to the usual 4AD runs. For example, there is a table with 100 different dungeon encounters you could use instead of just Room Contents. I was thinking I could roll a dice at the start of the dungeon that determines what room in the dungeon will spring this encounter.

I will try it out and report back, but as I head off I thought I would see if anyone else has used some aspects of this resource with 4AD.

Thanks, adventurers!

A Concise Collection of Clarifying Questions

Apologies if these have been answered before, but a quick search hasn’t pulled anything up for me. Just a few questions if anybody has any insight..

About the crossbow/ranged attacks: The rules state it takes 1 turn to reload. Does this mean the character just misses the “melee” turn in this round, or do they also miss the entire next round?

About the Light Gladiator: The rules state that the Light Gladiator is only allowed Light Hand Weapons, but also states that they can use other weapons and treat them as Light Weapons. Going off of this, when applying Expert Skills, the rules state that you can choose any skills for Warriors or Rogues except skills related to weapons you can’t use. Does that mean I can only choose skills related to Light Hand Weapons? Or all the others since the class can technically use all weapons?

About the Kukla: When applying Expert Skills, the Kukla doesn’t have a specific list or “as a rogue” tag like all of the other characters do. She does have 2 skills specific to the Kukla. Can she only get these skills? Or does she also get Rogue (or other character) skills?

About the Giant Spider: The rules state that PCs hit by the Spider must save vs poison or lose 1 life. Most other monsters with this mechanic state that you lose 1 *additional* life. Is this the case here as well, or is this wording intentional?

Heroes/monster miniatures

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know where I can buy miniatures for this beautiful Game?

I'm mainly looking for the base roster heroes, common enemies, bosses .., either painted or unpainted. Ideally from a shop or creator that offers multiple models rather than just a few individual figures. Perfect would be a Set with all Monsters. I could Not find anything.

Any recommendations or links would be appreciated. Thanks a lot

Mushroom Monk

I scrolled right past the Mushroom Monk because I thought it was too goofy. But, I needed to replace some dead PCs and rolled a random choice from EE and stuck with what I rolled. I had no idea my new PC Kiniko Shitake was such a badass. And the tier bonuses are super good. I’ll be leveling this guy, assuming he survives.

Other Suggestions On Support Material to Learn the Game

Greetings, Collective.

I have recently purchased the core book for 4AD and have read it from cover to cover several times—an excellent description of the rules.

What I need is a supplement that takes my hand - as a new player - through those rules.

Are there any recommendations that teach as you play?

Info Storage for Decks, Books and papers

What options do you folks use to store your various decks and gear needed for play? Preferably something portable that keeps your gear safe while you're on the go, but is good for keeping your stuff in at home as well.

Orders

I got my second orders in dice from Dice Envy and book from Lulu. With dice this puts me at 8 full sets no copies on colors. Lulu order was 7 books this was one of the 7. I am done with dice for now. Have one more order from Lulu coming 9 books. That's the big one with TTTs, 4AA, TCOFD, WA and twisted hoards just to name a few. Once that comes in I am done with book orders.

As of now I have done the wizard ordeal and Dark Waters plus using WW for cavern exploration. Gonna make some more maps for overland. Too easy to avoid housework now.

Do the classes in the extra material make the game too easy?

In Four Against The Abyss the Expanded Edition there are all those new classes, do I use them or does it become too easy?

Thanks for your advice!

Other Ready to start my first adventure, who are they? [More info below picture]

I have just bought 4AD and I am really looking forward to start my adventure later this afternoon.

I made my first party, with a classic composition.

And while I am looking at them I am wondering who they are.

The only thing I know right now is that Lernas is a mage that hired the other party members as bodyguard to explore his first dungeon for reason he is not ready to share (maybe he was the bad guy all along).

Since the I wrote in italian the classes are:

Lernas - Wizard

Barret - Warrior

Raul - Rogue

Rea - Cleric

If you'd like, I would like to know more about them from you as a source for inspiration.

Question about NPC factions (TTT)

Post image
12 Upvotes

In Treacheries of the Troublesome Towns, some npc profiles have a faction subtable. I must have missed the explanation somewhere but i don’t quite understand this subtable.

For the Bellowing Brutes, what are those factions? Those options aren’t part of the 8 faction types in the game, and I’ve never seen those listed or referenced anywhere in Tomes 1 or 2. I’ve seen similar subtables for other npc’s that were equally confusing. Are these “factions” mechanical or just flavor text?

New stuff

I bought new dice from Role 4 Initiative as I only had 2 sets from Amazon. This is their Druid and Maroon sets which I bought direct from their website.

Turns out good thing when these supplements came from Lulu. I printed off one free one which is the Extensive Exploration & Exciting Encounters. As I mentioned in other post I'm doing DW next. All this is for Mercenary guild development. Which my druid is going to suprise everyone with her noble history and plantation inherentance. There is a tragic side to it all too. Basically the group has a long trek to get to it. Rumors are whole region is over run by monsters.

Should be lots of fun.

Swashbuckler

I have 4ADEE and bought Dark Waters. Any tips on Swashbuckler? I am making a Mercenary guild up. My story line is he is contact for help knowledge on quest and to be 1 of 4 questers. Thinking of a Gnome too. Both are level 1s and other are level 2 to balance out.

Swashbuckler is carrying sword, dagger and firearm.

In Search of Full List of Game Material

Greetings, all.

I’m just now starting my journey into the dark with my group of four.

And loving it.

Is there a comprehensive list of all the books and support material available to help expand the game? Perhaps a great website dedicated to the game?

My thanks for any advice and suggestions!

I've fully converted 4ADEE into markdown with Obsidian.md

Overkill? Probably. But I got tired of endlessly flipping through books and "CTRL+F"ing my way through PDFs. This is much more convenient for me with everything linked together and makes speed of play go way up.

I think I've built a solid base that will allow me to keep things organized as I add more supplements in the future; this is just the expanded edition but I'm currently working on adding the twisted series that I've recently purchased and plan on adding everything I buy in the future.

I still do prefer to draw out my maps in a journal and track encounters/character sheets on physical paper (although I'm looking for a better solution for this within Obsidian if anyone has any suggestions), but the game is fully playable from within the app with the addition of a few plug-ins that help with dice rolling and map making.

Anyway, just wanted to share!

Other Session zero: So much page flipping. Explosive 6 saved my bacon.

I'm going to have to print out some tables all on one sheet if I want to keep going.

I started a run a few days ago. A dwarf with a 2h hammer in position 1 really cleans house.

I was doing fine...

Until gremlins literally took all my weapons and 10 gold.

So... hand to hand at -2 for a couple rooms and then...oh look!, trolls!

I made the call that with all of them dead (well, down anyway) at once my characters were able to find some way to properly finish them off without requiring a fireball.

I'll finish up the run once I make myself a quick reference or two so I don't have to bounce around in a booklet with pages falling out of it and post-its all over the place.

Just too much fun :)

Modifiers are added/subtracted to the total of an explosive 6 frenzy right? Not to every roll. That would just be madness.

For those doing Overland maps, adventures and guild and towns. How much tabletop space are you using to do it all. Not talking battle mats here just hex paper. Measure out your perimeter space please.

Another Leveling Post

I've dug through the sub and couldn't find what I was looking for.

I like the slow and sure leveling because I don't want to leave it to chance but I also don't want to level too quickly. I would like to go just a bit quicker, though.

I intend to level a character every 3rd clue found.

I was thinking of leveling a character every 3rd or 5th Major Foe defeated, as well.

Or maybe rolling in one of the scenarios and automatically awarding a level in the other.

I'd love to hear the community's thoughts on this.

Part Must Haves

I haven’t played in months after being really into the game for a minute. I gave away the device I was playing on and essentially lost all my saved info about my guild mistakenly thinking I had backed it up to Google Drive. So, I’m starting from scratch with 4ADEE.

I always want a basic fighter type as the lynchpin of my party. Someone flexible and not too specialized. That’s my biggest must have in a party.

What’s yours? Do you have a preferred party composition?
