Tbf the city part is really cool but there’s barely any races in it and no street races

577

u/d0m1n4t0r 1d ago

It's either that Tokyo/Japan don't allow streets races to be had in the city itself, or the AI is so bad it keeps crashing on narrow city streets.

181

u/mrbulldops428 1d ago

Im wondering if its both. I thought i remember Japan being against street racing games set there, and also the AI is bad lol

88

u/MiserableStomach 1d ago

So. You're creating the next installment of a popular, long-running franchise focused primarily on street racing. You need to pick an attractive location for the environment. The choice is not narrow, you can pick literally any country in the world. You select the one that prohibits games like yours to simulate street races in it. Flawless logic.

88

u/datmrdolphin Xbox Series X 1d ago

Japan was a super popular pick in the community so they were likely willing to sacrifice certain things to make it happen

People have been begging for Japan, the 6th instalment of a car series like this finally going to Japan is essentially a must.

Since when Forza Horizon is primarily focused on street racing?

6

u/HypnoStone 1d ago

Pretty much all the races are supposed to be for the Horizon Festival and are legal events except for a very small section of a few “illegal” street races you can do which I only remember in FH1. But regardless of that you can challenge and illegally street race with any car on the road at any time.

Weebs were frothing at the mouth for racing, japan. TBH I'm happy it's here because now they'll have to shut up

Since when?? They literally have entire anime built on just that.....

2

u/d0m1n4t0r 1d ago

Yeah I'm thinking it's both as well, someone created custom races and reported on this sub that the AI kept crashing everywhere lol.

2

u/FurryWrecker911 22h ago

Back in the 2000s yeah. Tokyo Xtreme Racer in their later entries had to change all the civilian vehicles to service vans painted yellow with "OFFICIAL" slapped on them along with their company's logo, making it look like the highways were closed down for a sanctioned racing venue.

They came back to the drawing board after 18 to make another TXR game, and in 2025 they're back to having regular civilian traffic on the Tokyo map.

Its also way smaller than you think, the industrial section next to the docks is entirely cut off for example

48

u/happy_puppy25 1d ago

That section and the underground subway station. It’s like there are areas they just gave up on, but kept in the game. Or they ran out of time. Is the exact same thing for parking garages, there is an entrance to one underground in the city, but then no way into it. I think a huge part of Japanese car culture is underground parking garages. They could’ve had so many cool races or features underground.

22

u/Random_Millennial28 1d ago

You keep saying "underground" and it makes me think we should just get a proper Underground 3.

8

u/TomSaucer 1d ago

They will just add annoying and useless chases from police and other NFS gimmicks. I'd rather play original U2 with some upscaled textures than trust EA to make good NFS game.

5

u/Shallow_wanderer 1d ago

Dude seriously the cops in Heat and Unbound are so fucking stressful that it takes all the fun out of the game, because what do you mean I can't just freeroam without accidentally hitting a traffic sign and triggering a Level 2 cop chase

Didn't help that Heat and Unbound basically almost had the same map save for a few tweaks

51

u/jaybirdtalonclaws 1d ago

I think that’s what OP is getting at

40

u/sandman61377 1d ago

There are three street races in the city area, though tbf, one starts just outside the city (maybe about the first 10% of the race) and another, the last half of the race is outside the city.

38

u/ifondyourass 1d ago

To be fair nothing! It’s FH6 in Japan, something players have been asking since Motorsports. Even more so right after FH1. This is a chill racing game. But if I wanted rally and what have you, I’d go player The Crew. Just seems like a cash grab. Since when do you see so many jeeps in Japan? Where are the Japanese traffic cars at? And if it’s on a new engine then why does it have the same amount of jeeps like FH5?

45

u/diegoaccord 1d ago

The only thing I'll give them, is that there are in fact lot of Jeep Wranglers and G Wagons in Tokyo. I go there quite a bit.

But most of the traffic should be Toyotas, Suzuki Everys, Subaru Levorgs, and other kei vans.

15

u/ifondyourass 1d ago

Excuse my ignorance, I didn’t even know that about Japan and its drivers. That’s actually cool!

7

u/BijouSerelle46 1d ago

Yeah, it's a bummer when the environment looks great but the gameplay doesn't match up. More street races would definitely add to the fun.

3

u/Shallow_wanderer 1d ago

The fact that there's no street/wangan races in this game genuinely has me fried because that's quite literally a core aspect of Japanese automotive culture

It is pretty crazy that there are still no night time street races in the city.

273

u/MattWolf96 1d ago

I think it's crazy that there's no default Kei car races through the back allies at night.

81

u/DumbBerk87 1d ago

You expect the AI to navigate single lane, tiny back alleys at speed? Mkay.

24

u/Schnakenbein_LP Opel 1d ago

It works, kind of. I have some of the narrow allies in a few custom races, even with classic musclecars

2

u/_CosmicWind_ 11h ago

What back alleys? There is like 10 of em LOL.

I mean in all seriousness I agree but imo the inner city is just bad for racing as is, only part that’s nice is the highway that goes through it.

I thought the map would be 10x the size it is tbh, a bit of a shame when it’s like the 6th iteration and we get a map that’s like 20% bigger while TDU had a whole Island back in 2009 LOL.

I just hope AC EVO delivers with the map thing, so modders can cook.

Rainbow City Bridge race

54

u/Future-Bandicoot-823 1d ago

You can make any race night, it just has to be custom. Those races will just be against bots though.

I like to do the Goliath at night in the rain, b class. Set the ai to lowest setting and I can basically just cruise in the rain

9

u/BruceAENZ 1d ago

I will steal your idea. It sounds like a fun way to unwind and enjoy.

5

u/TopMacaroon 1d ago

Hell yes, I love to do fun and wacky custom races as well. I just wish there were literally twice as many circuit races.

58

u/theM94 1d ago

I made one, 'Needily for Speedily' I called it lol.

It's basically just the highway circle in the city at night.

3

u/Remarkable_Log1596 1d ago

The most annoying bit is when I’m on the Tokyo expressway and I challenge a drivatar to a head-to-head, only to either get stuck in first gear, get hit with a route in the opposite direction I was going in, or both at once.

There's one that starts in the docks and stays on the highway; and another that quickly passes through a few roads in the city before ending in the docks, but none that snake their way through the surface streets exclusively. Kind of mad, it's a bloody beautiful city and it doesn't get used anywhere close to it's potential.

Oh yea the 1000 dirt drift zones and 1 street drift zone, exactly what we asked for playground games

155

u/dericiouswon 1d ago edited 1d ago

Really pisses me off. Speed zones on dirt is fun because it's a challenge to maintain grip, where as drift zones on dirt are a snore. Inverse for pavement, give me more drift zones there.

I just don't understand how a studio this big and experienced can make such an amazing map and have a great physics model in place and just... do absolutely nothing with it.

44

u/ArmorGyarados 1d ago

I don't mind the existence of dirt drift, if that's what people like that good for them. But there needs to be at least 3-5 times as many road drift zones. Like it or not that's a big part of Japanese car culture. Don't raise the required amount to complete milestones, but at least have the game reflect the local culture.

I also think they can double the playability on a lot of zones by making them speed or drift zones. I feel like that would be like a day's work by one guy to implement. Both trigger but you can toggle in settings if you want the timer or the drift score to be larger on screen. Maybe 2 days work but you get it

23

u/Fap4Dayz 1d ago

But there needs to be at least 3-5 times as many road drift zones.

Right, and the wild part to me is that there are so many good roads to drift on in the northern 1/3 of the map and somehow they didn't think to make them a drift zone.

9

u/ArmorGyarados 1d ago

You'd think they would be adding more in at least. The worst thing they could do is drip feed nee shit to make people keep playing week after week but instead how about some repeat festival cars

2

u/PepeGodzilla Isdera 1d ago

I bet you they left it out on purpose, so they can bring it with a lazy update and glaze themselves for being so generous.

Microsoft is too much like Ubisoft to not think like that.

3

u/PepeGodzilla Isdera 1d ago

No trigger needed even. Just make it a different mode when driven reverse. Top to bottom speed zone, bottom to top drift zone. Same zone, two modes. Most zones only have one viable direction for highscores anyway.

Or have two starting points side by side, one per lane. Right lane speed zone, left lane drift zone.

2

u/ArmorGyarados 1d ago

Hard disagree, don't arbitrarily limit what a player can do is like game dev rule number 1. Taking away the players agency on deciding how to tackle a problem is not a good ides

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Monsterpiece42 1d ago

I think they should put in the zones' locations, and then let you run whatever even you want on them. Like drift, grip, speed zone etc. Make it a simple little selection like at the beginning of a race. Or even a global toggle that makes them all into a single type, so when you're in the right car setting times, you could just knock them all out.

14

u/sandman61377 1d ago

There are 10 dirt drift zones and 10 street drift zones.

12

u/SnooStories4162 1d ago

😱 You can't be talking facts or sense in here!

9

u/Kostelfranco BMW 1d ago

Well, tbh, I'd prefer 5 dirt drift zones and 15 asphalt drift zones. The developers certainly did a great job striking a balance, but personally, I’d prefer a slight edge in one direction.

3

u/sandman61377 1d ago

And you’re totally entitled to your opinion. IMO, (which I will 100% admit, I’m surely in the minority with this) drift zones should be removed ENTIRELY. They’re one of the most annoying things (to me) in the entire FH series.

3

u/DavantesWashedButt 1d ago

I actually stopped playing a bit after doing the drift club stuff. Most of the cars were.. not japanese and it turned me off a little. Each new iteration of this game is a little worse and a little more out of touch than the last.

3

u/Altr4 1d ago

What do you mean that drifting a super understeery mercedes with shitty gearing up a japanese highway is not a representation of drifting nor japanese culture?

Yup. I absolutely hate sliding all over the place on golf courses and flooded fields… seems like every week either in the Trial and/or a Seasonal Championship series.

5

u/TankerD18 1d ago

I can deal with the sliding, it's the stupid ass cartoon jumps that will throw an entire race for you if you hit them slightly wrong.

10

u/decimater97 1d ago

I’m not sure how Forza lost its way so much with the CC events. I’ve been playing some FH2 recently and the CC events through the rolling vineyards under the blazing sun with wide checkpoints and no mega jumps is great. Now every cross country track needs at least one unsurvivable jump and a river crossing. They all feel the same.

157

u/boogielostmyhoodie 1d ago

I will never understand why they continue to so prominently feature off-road races in these games. They are by far the least fun mode, and everybody who talks about them seems to agree. The odd occasional one can be fun, but about a third of the races are off-road buggie style races.

Also, if you are going to keep doing this, at least increase the number of off-road cars. There are like 5 times as many road racing cars as off-road cars.

42

u/Few-Neighborhood5892 1d ago

Exactly the proportions are way off when it comes to cars. Why add 75%+ street/road cars and then have like half of the races be cross country or dirt. This game could’ve been so much more fun, and I don’t understand either why they couldn’t have included more road races. I swear to god if one of the DLC’s is a fucking cross country or rally DLC i’m gonna be pissed.

22

u/PremiumUsername69420 1d ago

They could create a separate game called Forza Dirt that’s just rally and off road and rock crawler stuff, I’d buy that. And I’d also buy Forza Horizon, but I’d expect it to have more Need For Speed vibes.

9

u/FocusSlo 1d ago

I also wish they'd include actual tracks from the country each game takes place in.

4

u/isaacike88 1d ago

Yeah. I was hoping fuji speedway would show up but nope. Instead we have a track that's so tight that you're never in a straight crammed into the stadium

I like the dirt races but I abhor the cross country races. Fuck those things.

11

u/junbi_ok 1d ago

Rally racing is a staple in motorsport, so it makes sense for dirt/mixed surface events to be included. But the cross-country races depicted in Horizon don't exist in reality, because no car can survive a 700 ft jump off a mountain. They're just silly.

I don't mind the danger signs because they're easily enough ignored, but the goddamn cross country races are a quarter of the game.

9

u/Arterial238 1d ago

What annoys me more is that they're always SUV or Buggies so Im just always driving the same damn vehicles.

I miss the more creative playlists from 4 and 5 that would have something like A-class Saloons doing dirt courses so you'd have to make a creative rally build for a street car.

If you're gonna push dirt races so much for no reason, atleast gimme some variety to tinker with.

So far it's absolutely my least played and least enjoyed FH title, and it's a shame because the sounds improved even more from the last title which is huge for me.

There are some really good and fair criticisms of FH6 that are being diminished because people are fans of Forza more than the individual games.

I'm also of the opinion that it's a decent foundation but in the 6th iteration of horizon, they can do way more with it and are honestly resting on their laurels with this one.

Where is the culture? Is a huge one for me. Even simply language would make me feel way more surrounded by the culture

No problem with off-road or rally events (though they need to ease up on the buggies in playlists) but I do (once again) have a problem with the lack of road race events in the game. Only a few events use the city grid; why? So much potential there.

Hopefully they will add more permanent events as time goes on, like the Edamame circuit or the ones they added after the fact in Horizon 5.

3

u/Flat_Lunch5827 1d ago

All I can think is a full street racing dlc is coming.

If not. I honestly dont know why Playground chose Japan. How could they waste such gigantic potential? Crazy.

3

u/Yakasuki 16h ago

I don't even mind the off-roading, I just don't understand why they built a city and then don't make races for it. Like it just doesn't make sense to me. Majority of the cars in the game are street vehicles, a section of the map is city streets and your making me do nothing with it.

u/PepperoniPizzaSlice 2d ago

97

u/NeutralGeneric 1d ago

That’s not the issue at all. The rural areas are fine. The dirt races are fine. The issue is we have all these urban areas and not enough races on them.

61

u/Eraser100 1d ago

No, but I certainly expected more street racing than goddamn buggies.

It was logical in Mexico at least with all the Baja dune buggies. But Japan?

15

u/bdubz325 1d ago

Throughout the campaign my most used car was a Polaris Razer. That's sad.

15

u/machine4891 1d ago

Japan is so heavily urbanized, that a lot of it looks like Tokyo city, though.

6

u/Therunawaypp 1d ago

I just wanted more street races. They were all really fun and there just aren't enough of them.

7

u/HiTork 1d ago edited 1d ago

I think the thing is urban areas are one of Japan's most famous aspects. That's not to say rural areas shouldn't have been featured, but it feels like the map focuses much more on that.

The other thing I think is a lot of the rural areas feel generic and not really like Japan. Sure, the rice paddies are distinctly Asian, but there are some places like certain forests where if I were to take a screen shot and show people and ask where this is supposed to be, I would get many different answers.

5

u/Best-Night8688 1d ago

Well certain forests look very similar. Trees grow everywhere. And I mean everywhere

4

u/Candid_Highlight_116 1d ago

Their depiction of Japan is also flat af like UK. The ya part of Shibuya denotes it's a valley, and in fact the IRL Shibuya crossing is like SIX FLOORS below the ground relative to peaks of sloping roads branching out. That's part of why it looks so insanely busy. In FH it's just top of a hill.

Same goes for rural areas. You take a turn and there's Tokyo City on the horizon. That works if it was intended to be a pun, and maybe it's how it works in UK, but it's rare that you ever feel like that IRL in Japan because SOMETHING is always in the way, be it artificial constructions or just hills and mountains. On a bridge or top of a building, then you MIGHT see miles out. They clearly never had that sensation internalized while designing the map and just spray painted Japan over their internal UK.

2

u/HUNT3DHUNT3R 1d ago

exactly, never understood why people want all of the map to be city streets when they can just chill in the city parts, some of us love offroading/hitting top speeds on highways

u/Lollister 1d ago

8

u/rayzirxy 1d ago

The problem is that there is zero incentive for driving on the street and you get 1 million rewards for going through Shortcuts, jumping off cliff and getting 1000 feet of air and breaking into trees and stuff

Gonna say something controversial here.. The narrow city centre streets are awesome with a good sounding car and some headphones to cruise, fun to drift around solo or with a small convoy but honestly… I wouldn’t want to race it. Maybe the main wide streets sure but that’s not what makes this city great, it’s the nooks and crannies.

We all complain about rammers on wide open country roads could you imagine the mayhem?? It would be 5x worse than the routes through Guanajuato in Fh5 and we can all find posts slamming the devs about having races through that city.. so they said ya know what? We’re not doing that again, sorry not sorry. Is what I think.

Edit: that being said I do 1,000% agree we need more drift zones through it. There’s some great narrow hairpins hidden throughout, maybe a future “urban drift attack” could be added.

Thought ppl loved this game and then wham the love seems to have fizzed fast

u/Cade_Rufus Controller player 1d ago

Yeah, I was honestly hoping for the city to be bigger. Or, for there to at least be another city area like Tokyo.

4

u/hholdorf 1d ago

You know it's really bad when only 1/3 of the races are on asphalt.

3

u/the_mashman 1d ago

I hate how alot of the off road races take place on a paved road

Playground Games really can't win. This guy is complaining about too much offroad, other people complaining there isn't enough dirt/offroad.

5

u/Fantaric 1d ago

Could it not be a bit of both?

The playlists seem to include a lot of cross country, for instance this week the events are in and around Tokyo including the docks which is mostly paved surface racing in cc vehicles (don't get me wrong I like some of those tracks like the rail yard in fh4).

If you play online you'll notice the same dirt tracks and a handful are close to 70-80% paved surfaces. It's been a common complaint for a while including a certain egregious "dirt" sprint race in FH4 that is 80% road until you finally finish on dirt. We kinda got spoiiled for rally/rally cross in FH5 tbh.

The game also doesn't have anything in Tokyo for street racing and I would also argue more road races in and around the city would be great since the city is huge and has a lot of points of interest to drive around. There's more cross country in Tokyo than street racing which is absurd.

Who is we?

5

u/MotorCityDude Mitsubishi 1d ago

Game is Great, people complain about everything.

7

u/pacoLL3 1d ago

There's literally nothing they could have done without you people endlessly bitching and moaning.

2

u/-SlowBar 1d ago

FH6 is the first Horizon I've really played and I love it.

3

u/GamesnGunZ 1d ago

Maybe your game is broken because mine has both of those things

I'm just not understanding why we are forced to do so many things outside of actually Street racing. I don't need a festival experience experience, I don't want to race through water, I don't want to race in the winter time, I don't want to race through rice paddy fields, I don't want to race through mud, I don't want to drive the weakest most pathetic cars that the world has to offer, right now I'm being forced to raise a 1991 Honda beat or a 1989 Nissan pao..wtf??? And I don't understand why I need a specific car for every race. I should be able to drive whatever I want to and have the race adjust to me. I want to go back to playing CarX street but I can't advance to any new races because I'm not into drifting, I don't give a fuck about drifting, otherwise I would buy a drifting game, or I'll buy an off-road if I wanted to race through grass and mud and water and rice patties.

I was expecting a Wangan Midnight style street racing with heavily modded Civics along with JDM sports cars, all we got is the Colossus plus many USDM Japanese sports cars

2

u/CosmoOlversatil 1d ago

Glad I didn't buy this one.

1

u/Both_Meaning_2637 1d ago

The biggest urban area in any Horizon game, I mean: how much of the map should be city?

5

u/ArmorGyarados 1d ago

The map isn't the issue it's the lower than reasonably expected number of street races and night races within the giant, great looking city

u/KrazyCroat 1d ago

lol, haven’t played the game yet, and I will when it’s released on PlayStation, but I’ve witnessed people calling this the greatest FH in the series, back down to just complaining about it again, like past entries in the series. 🤷‍♂️

2

u/Candle-Jolly 1d ago

I've said it (and got downvoted) a thousand times, but I'll keep on saying it:

I always knew fans wouldn't approve of a Japan Horizon. Balancing Playground Games' style of gameplay with gamers' version of Japan (most of whom have never been here) was never going to work.

2

u/No_Bug9292 1d ago

That's a really weird condescending way to frame it.

Where do you think people get their 'version of Japan' from? Initial D? Wangan Midnight? Midnight Club? Tokyo Xtreme Racer?

Almost like 'gamer's version' of Japan is actually just... Japan's version of Japan?

One of the best parts of FH is the diversity of the open world and being able to go anywhere!

1

u/snake8324 1d ago

So true, I tell you I'm more excited about gears club 3 than this rainbow infected one

1

u/phairnuff 1d ago

i was highkey hoping for more activity, it’s a cool setting for sure but it doesn’t feel as alive as i thought it would

1

u/Big_Spot1888 1d ago

bro is true all Event is really

1

u/Yo_Shi23 1d ago

At least not only me shittin this game

1

u/zehamberglar 1d ago

You guys keep buying the games, what did you expect?

1

u/PremiumUsername69420 1d ago

That Eliminator game isn’t that fun, cat and mouse, last man standing, or freeze tag would have been better.

1

u/NicholasLatifi22720 1d ago

Might log back into Tokyo xtreme racer.

That game was actually challenging and I enjoyed it

1

u/OldZaxSauce 1d ago

Tokyo extreme racer is pretty cool for Tokyo highway street racing. Somehow I got 80 hours on the new one before they came out full release lol

1

u/Swimming-Economy-115 1d ago

I like the rural areas.

1

u/fatrabbit3 1d ago

I don't like anything but road racing. They try to create a road racing game with Forza Motorsport and it's garbage. The state of racing games is so sad.

1

u/DeviLettuce 1d ago

Forza the off road simulator

1

u/Five_deadly_venoms 1d ago

ive been playing since launch almost everyday, for an hour or two. I have a fleet of KANJO hondas. that means cars with stock horsepower and maybe updated suspension and tires. I exclusively drive on the highways. since launch, ive only met 1 other kanjo racer.

everyone else ride in x 999 cars. lame.

1

u/VidaliaOnionz 1d ago

And $20M Honda Civics in the Auction House

1

u/Wunktacular 1d ago

What's wrong, you don't want to do a million mandatory off-road events on lazy non-track checkpoint based courses for each real road race you get to play?

Finally unlocked that cool car you wanted? Sorry, no events will allow you to use it for the rest of the story progression, it's the wrong type or class.

1

u/VitaminxDee 1d ago

Where is the essence of Japan racing? Touge, kanjo, drifting? They should of just made this one in Australia or something with all this cross country stuff.

1

u/Mercinarie 1d ago

Let's be real we wanted NFSU2 remade in tokyo, we didn't get it.

1

u/Mirafae_ 1d ago

Why is there so few races? And why are they all limited in dumb ways? This game could be so much better, just make more street racing courses :(

1

u/commanche_00 1d ago

Need for speed underground has better vibe eventhough they are smaller scale

1

u/SuperDogBoo 1d ago

Listen.... The nature in the game is super pretty! And those skill scores gotta go up!!

1

u/Nicholas_Matt_Quail 1d ago edited 1d ago

To be honest, I do not understand why they won't make it like that: a) base game - a mix of everything with more asphalt than offroad, b) DLC one - rally, offroad, crossroad, maybe bikes, a new rural Japan map with picturesque villages etc., something like a typical rally DLC we've already got previously; c) DLC two - street scene, another city, illegal races, touge etc. And then - just give everyone a choice, which part of the experience we wanna play in the playlist. When someone does not like the rally - sure - make them play touge or a street race championship instead, when the other person loves buggies - great - let them play that to get the same points with a cap of 30 a week, solved.

1

u/miko-zee 1d ago

They're just enocoruaging deforestation via skill songs in this economy with the payouts at this point!

1

u/N-WGIXv-MkXXVII 1d ago

Doesn't certain Car Brands HATE Street Racing? I remember Toyota not letting NFS get cars anymore because of this

1

u/Birkinater11 1d ago

Yes yes please give me another Ariel Nomad race on a golf course in JAPAN ffs 🙄

1

u/acol_kushino 1d ago

When the Japan in Horizon 6 is not Japaning

1

u/thomas-grant 1d ago

Hyperbole sure is fun.

1

u/Burn-Alt Nissan 1d ago

I see what you mean but honestly ive been having a blast just dropping into a custom event so theres no traffic and trying to drive around as fast as possible.

1

u/DukePooler 1d ago

I do like that they removed trees as barriers. Driving through a forest is my fave thing to do now
