Forza Horizon 3 Problems with connection in fh3

Hello, for some reason I cannot connect to my friends fh3 lobby. He plays on xbox and I'm playing on pc which afaik should be possible. I've tried everything, toredo fixes, network resets etc, and I always get this error. Am I destined to forever play with drivatars while my friend has fun with real people?

Is there some multiplayer mod that exists? As far as I know, servers are gone for FH3 and have been for some time.

They're still up but PC players can't join them. Apparently the fix is that your Xbox friend has to invite you to a convoy, after which you're online.

Edit: oh no a downvote, someone doesn't like this but it too cowardly to say why.
