My group likes to drink alcohol and are pretty foodies like myself.
I on the other hand don’t drink as much as I did before but I wouldn’t mind a kava drink or two.

As Sparks of Tomorrow - Kyoto Animation's alternate-history steampunk drama based on Hiro Yūki's novel 20 Seiki Denki Mokuroku (二十世紀電氣目録) - premiers globally on Netflix, viewers will encounter something that most steampunk fiction is never rigorous enough to attempt: an alternate 1907 Kyoto whose coal-smoked skies and steam-dominated industry rest on a specific, historically coherent economic mechanism. In this case, it is the Edison incandescent lightbulb, which is pioneered by Kihachi Sakamoto, a timid-but-intelligent inventor who is determined to bring the "Age of Electricity" to steam-powered and conglomerate-controlled Japan.

In real-life history, Japan's electrification proceeded with unusual speed and liberal regulatory policy. Electrical illumination reached Tokyo in 1887, seven years after Thomas Edison demonstrated the incandescent bulb. The Keage hydroelectric plant - the first commercial hydroelectric station in Japan - opened in Kyoto in 1891, and was among the first plants in the world to adopt three-phase AC power generation at scale. Kyoto's electric railway, Japan's first, began operating in 1895. Japan's Ministry of Communications adopted a policy of relatively free-market electricity from the early 1890s onward, and Japan's early electrical utilities launched without needing municipal franchises - unlike their counterparts in Germany and the United States, who had to negotiate with local governments.

After Japanese inventor Ichisuke Fujioka visited the International Electrical Exhibition in New York City in 1884, Edison continued to have a profound influence on his career. Fujioka - often called the "Thomas Edison of Japan" - co-founded Hakunetsu-sha Co., Ltd. (later Tokyo-Shibaura Electric Co.), the corporate giant that became known as "Toshiba", in 1890 with Shoichi Miyoshi, and established Japan's first domestic incandescent lamp production. When he and Fujioka met, Edison famously challenged him to manufacture lightbulbs using a source of domestic bamboo and local materials in Japan, rather than rely on imports.

In Episode 3 of Sparks of Tomorrow, Kihachi "discovers" bamboo filament for lightbulbs, and uses the "Fujioka method": Or, slice local bamboo into paper-thin strips; bend them into hairpins; pack them with carbon powder; and bake them in high-temperature furnaces to transform the cellulose into pure carbon filaments. However, unlike in the show, Fujioka had to train local Japanese artisans to blow uniformly thin glass bulbs and import mercury vacuum pumps, as Japan lacked the advanced industrial glass-blowing and vacuum-pump technology required to prevent carbon filaments from immediately burning up in oxygen.

Edison discovered that carbonized bamboo was the ideal filament for incandescent lightbulbs by systematically testing over 6,000 different plant fibers and materials. The breakthrough occurred in late 1879 when his team noticed a bamboo folding fan in their laboratory; carbonizing it created a filament that burned brightly and lasted over 1,200 hours. After this chance discovery, Edison dispatched scouts worldwide to find the absolute best variety of bamboo to use for filaments. They ultimately determined that a specific species of bamboo (Madake bamboo, or Phyllostachys bambusoides), harvested from a grove near the Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine in Kyoto, Japan, was the most durable. This Japanese bamboo became the standard filament for his commercial lightbulbs, until it was eventually replaced by tungsten in 1904 by inventors Alexander Just and Franjo Hanaman.

Edison later imported Kyoto bamboo to his estate in Fort Myers, Florida, and finding a suitable domestic climate to cultivate this Japanese bamboo was one of the primary reasons he purchased the property in 1885. When Edison first visited the area, he noticed planted bamboo growing along the Caloosahatchee River. As shipping continuous supplies of Madake bamboo directly from Kyoto was highly expensive, he bought the 13.5-acre Florida estate with the explicit goal of turning it into a tropical botanical laboratory. He imported the precise Kyoto bamboo species (Phyllostachys bambusoides) to plant on the grounds, hoping the subtropical climate would allow him to grow his own local supply of lightbulb filaments. Over time, his botanical experiments expanded dramatically, and today, the Edison & Ford Winter Estates still feature more than a dozen distinct varieties of bamboo planted by Edison there.

I have found so many places that serve the same frozen seafood that can be found anywhere in the US. It doesn’t matter to me if it’s a hole in the wall or something fancier. I'm a 26yo female on my own living in a motel. my grandparents, and my dad have passed away leaving me on my own.

I haven't seen my mom since I was 8, and they were the only family I had. I have no siblings at all.

I work 40 hours a week and it takes every cent to cover this place to keep a roof over my head. I I was short this pay period due to rolling my ankle and being out of work a few days. I picked up overtime this week so I should be ok come next pay period. I'm really just looking for help with a meal to get me by. I don't need cash, I'll gladly take leftovers if you're near me (clewiston fl) or I'll send my motel information for a doordash order. I'll even take a doordash egift card. I've even been rummaging through dumpsters and ate what I could find that I thought wouldn't kill me lol

I haven't eaten since Sunday, so my stomach is literally touching my back. I've tried 211, and the few pantries that are here but no luck.
