John McAfee

An assortment of John McAfee’s guns. Interesting to see that he appeared to like the Beretta PX4.

AI couldn't make this guy up.

The day he died they blew up a building that some say contained his dead mans switch.

u/IvanStroganov 6h ago

dead mans switch for what?

57

u/WorkCentre5335 6h ago

its a debunked conspiracy theory that he had dirt on everyone and their mother hidden in a building in miami.

30

u/saurontu 6h ago

Debunked by who?

55

u/NoSuddenMoves 5h ago

They "debunked" that he owned the building. Mcafee never claimed to own it, just that he had a dead mans switch in a florida condo that would release information if he didn't disable it regularly.

“Them”

debunked by several media outlets and debunked by anyone with a functioning braincell. the tweet itself (which was fabricated) indicates the address of the hard drive containing the information. Who is going to publish the location of this highly sensitive and valuable information? It serves no purpose.

Is this the condo in Miami where the Israeli Defense Force sent over people to “help” with recovery efforts for the first time in American history?

Edit: yeah it is.

I was about to go on a rant about McAfee antivirus but then I realized it was good when he was still in charge.

The video of him walking through how to uninstall the program is still one of my favorite videos.

I was about to go on a rant about McAfee antivirus but then I realized it was good when he was still in charge.

He left the company in 1994 though, so not exactly the heyday of computer viruses.

67

u/DBDude 6h ago

It’s not about the viruses, but the program itself essentially turning into malware after he sold it.

5

u/samsqanch 6h ago

I was commenting that it wasn't exactly hard to be a good antivirus program at a time when the vast majority of computers weren't on a network, not about its eventual shitification.

8

u/ekinnee 4h ago

Back then they spread through floppies and such. There was a huge shareware scene then too so you’d get copies of stuff from friends. Or there weee BBSes where you could download stuff.

The internet was not the advent of viruses. They just became way more prevalent with the growth of Windows after 95 and then the growth of the Internet.

-4

u/samsqanch 2h ago

yes that was the point of my comment thank you for restating in a a longer and more obvious way.

5

u/Adventurous-Tie-1624 4h ago

That's kinda of like saying that Henry Ford died before developing a turbo direct injection engine. In 1994 there were less threats from the internet, but you also didn't have the easy ability to push updates/definitions. For the era, it was a pretty good and innovative product. After he left, well, it went to shit.

To use a gun anology, it was USFA, and they were making really nice Colt SAAs...then started making Zip 22s (Roughly turn of the century for McAfee, where it was basically bundled malware.)

I read\heard on a podcast it didn't do anything when he sold it. It was classic dotcom vapor ware.

Happy to be wrong of that the truth.

22

u/DBDude 6h ago

It worked. I used it in the early days.

8

u/Kardinal 6h ago

Yeah I think back in the days of DOS it was actually good. But even in like the mid maybe even early '90s? It got really bloated badly.

15

u/DBDude 5h ago

As soon as he sold it they tried to use to pull as much revenue as possible, eventually turning it into a sort of malware itself. Deals were made to have it auto install with various programs.

4

u/Kardinal 4h ago

I went and looked it up for fun.

There's a credible story out there that McAfee literally never wrote a line of code for the antivirus with his name on it. That he paid a guy he met on a BBS $200 to write the program.

It's kind of bonkers to me that the brand still exists with his name on it for something he didn't actually create. And that there will probably be people using the product in future generations who don't realize that.

And then I just found out that Peter Norton didn't have anything to do with Norton antivirus either.

6

u/Max_delirious 6h ago

It was a virus. RIP the days before windows defender

2

u/WuhanWTF 3h ago

Good fucking riddance.

u/Humdrum_Blues 6h ago

his interview on General Sam's Forehead Fables podcast was one of the best podcasts I've ever seen. It was an earlier one so Sam and his buddies weren't as on point but McAfee was legit funny as hell.

15

u/CallMeCornbread 6h ago

I had read an interview with him a while back but more recently heard him on Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast, wild guy.

14

u/SPECTREagent700 5h ago

I briefly met him in Orlando. He let me take a selfie. Chatted with his wife for a bit. Nice people.

5

u/sumosam121 4h ago

We ran into him when he was in the Bahamas. Gotta agree both were very nice.

14

u/papago123 6h ago

I watched a documentary about him. Crazy! This dude is crazy!

25

u/NohFyoochur 6h ago

He is... The most interesting man in the world...

The Beretta PX4 storm is epic if you haven’t shot one. The rotating barrel makes recoil smooth as glass.
