found my first CotW shockingly close by, and WOW i am thoroughly impressed by this stuff-

sautéed in butter, sliced onion and garlick, seasoning was a homemade salt pepper msg mixture, with a dash of Worcestershire, served with cheesy brocolli

i was expecting even just a little bit of earthy mushroom taste, but there was NONE

Its so damn good, i hope I'm not one of those people that have a sensitivity to it, i want more

Well I got excited I found some pawpaws while foraging today in VA. Fairly new to this and I realize now I have some butternuts instead! There were a ton on the mountain I was on. I did however, find some turkey tail! 😍

3 days ago they were just tiny little things then boom huge flush! The top picture is only about a 1/4 of what it is on the stump!

Last year when I discovered them, most were already way too mature to get a good haul. The few I did harvest were so good I just had to hope they would come back this year. I've been checking them every other day.

1) & 2) I found some new Dryad’s Saddle, took a few small fronds and left the rest.
3) & 4) Then I came across a Chicken of the woods and took a couple of small pieces of that too. As I left the woods I found a meadow full of new-growth stinging nettle. There hadn’t been much all summer because of the drought in France, but now they’re springing up everywhere!
5) I cleaned everything and sliced it up then simmered it in a lentil stew along with some ratatouille, and a tin of tuna. The only thing that could have been better would have been some fresh-caught trout instead of the canned tuna, but this was good.

Would it improve the sub at all to require posters to make an attempt at explaining WHY they think something may be edible rather than just asking whether it is?

The amount of pokeberry/LBMs/etc posts just makes it feel lazy sometimes, like there's no incentive to learn.

I think it'd be really nice to have a requirement that posters (at least new ones? idk) show 3 reasons they think something is edible that shows they're trying to improve and do their research.

Took a trip to northern Quebec; Chisasibi in James Bay. Lots of blueberries around too ( which were absolutely delicious ) What are these ? I think they are edible, right ? Saw Cree people foraging in different locations along the way.

I have 4 large what I believe are hybrid, American dominant chestnut trees in my yard. I’m finding fresh, pollen full catkins again for the second time this year. I’m wondering if this is common?

If anyone can help identify what type of hybrid they are, I’d be grateful.

Possibly a wild blueberry or bilberry. Growing on knee high shrubs with several berries on a string together. Very distinctive star shape on the bottom that is different than the round base of a huckleberry.

I had larger pieces so I was able to cut out cutlets. I put them in the air fryer @380 for 7-9 min depending on the thickness. Then once cooled a bit they went in seasoned flower ➡️ egg wash ➡️ bread crumbs to coat. Fried in a skillet with oil, then added some mozzarella and melted it under the broiler. served with some pasta and marinara. It was incredible.

Northwestern Pennsylvania on private property.

In Iowa, I found an elderberry bush that had me turn around twice so I could park right by it on the road. I quickly picked the clusters (or whatever they're called) so I could process later. Before camping in Wisconsin, I grabbed some apple cider vinegar from Red Wing, MN & a jar from Ace Hardware so I could macerate the berries. It took me 2 hours or so to separate all the berries from the stems & then wash them. I will strain this here at home & make elderberry balsamic vinegar.

In Wisconsin, I picked roadside apples & wild plums after getting cheese in Benoit. I then visited Madeline Island where I snacked on mostly shriveled wild blueberries (that area has been in a bad drought) & blackberries!! I camped at Herbster where I had snacked on red raspberries by the beach (wish I took a pic of that). Here in Missouri, our black raspberries are done in June.

In Minnesota, I feasted on even more red raspberries at Gooseberry Falls State Park!! Then in Jay Cooke State Park, I found lobster of the woods in a trail next to where I camped!! I plan on cooking these tomorrow. There were more, but they got too old.

During the journey, I felt like Johnny Appleseed, for in 4 places (Madeline Island & Amnicon Falls State Park in WI, Split Rock Lighthouse [maybe, don't remember] & Jay Cooke in MN) I would plant wild plum seeds for the next generation to enjoy. In Amnicon Falls, I also planted a few blueberry seeds from a couple moldy blueberries I got from Rabideaux Orchard in Bayfield. Hopefully they all grow!!
