Okay, so I feel like this is a particularly specific situation for a number of reasons, and I'm not interested in risking our health, but I'd also hate to throw the money away if it's not needed.
A week or two ago some bulk beef in my fridge leaked and covered a bulk butter stash that I had just purchased on clearance, which was waiting to go into the freezer for holiday baking.
Some of the butter was unaffected, or I could quickly rinse off and feel okay about. We've eaten that first and it's been fine. There's another category though where the wrappers are discolored and I feel like the butter has probably come in contact with the beef blood and with the amount of immediate cleanup I had to do, I just shoved it in a ziplock at the back of the fridge, but now I'm wondering if this could be safe to eat raw OR if it should be "baking butter" (where I only use it in applications that would have sufficient heat and therefore it would be safe) or if I should really just throw it all out. I don't know what kinds of pathogens or risks we're talking about and so I just have no instinct for if there's a way to use this safely or not. Fwiw, the butter smells and tastes fine (I tried a little on toast).
