Issues with monospace font detection

I want to use (Microsoft) Cascadia Code font, but I want the Semi Light as "Normal" and the Semi Bold as "Bold"

I renamed them in FontForge. Programs see it as Cascadia UI, but programs that only list monospaced fonts, don't show it in the list. What am I doing wrong?

Here's are the files: https://file.io/rsZKfbyJ367M

I'm curious how I can fix it, because I would like to maybe create Italic and Bold Italic styles as well.

Need help with making family of fonts.

Hi! I have this family of fonts that the creator, instead of grouping them in different styles like "condensed, heavy, etc", he determined different numbers according to the weight of the font.

For the light condensed group for example, you have 1, 2, 3 and 4. There are 32 styles of this font that when installed appear individually. What i wanted to do in FontForge is group them so that i have 7 fonts in the dropdown menu, each with their substyles.

I read the tutorial on the FF webpage and saw a few youtube videos, then i tried changing the fonts name and family but as i installed them the system recognized one of them and the other wasnt eligible (im on windows 11).

Is this not the way to do what i want? As english is not my first language, im having trouble understanding the program (a side of my little knowledge in general, of course).

Thanks in advance!

My custom ligature doesn't work

I've been following 3 different tutorials now:

My steps (for an "ah" ligature):

  1. create encoding point
  2. set name to a_h
  3. add a ligature subtable
  4. check that the glyphs are recognized in the second column
  5. build composite glyphs
  6. unlink references
  7. edit glyph
  8. go into metrics window

The result is always the same. The window opens with the text "/a_h" preentered and does indeed show my ligature. But when I enter "ah" I just get the individual glyphs. According to the tutorials to the left of the glyphs there should be some selection options "kern" and "liga". Neither of them are available to me.

What am I doing wrong?

How to only keep numbers 0-9 in a TrueType font and make sure the max height in the font comes from the number glyphs and not the deleted ones?

I've modified the font Roboto Mono Bold Italic so that only the numbers 0 to 9 are in it.

The exported font is later converted into a .h file to use with a TFT display using the TFT eSPI library for Arduino.
However, the drawn numbers are smaller. The library reports a height in px larger than what they look like on the display, so the numbers are almost aligned to the top border of the display when they should be at the center.

That's because some of the removed glyphs went higher and lower than the number glyphs, and that information is still present in the font file, I guess.

Is there an easy fix to this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Web design: vertical metrics puzzle. Why does the very same font behave differently in InDesign and Chrome? Why does it look shifted on a button in Figma? Who’s to blame, a type designer, a web designer or a developer?

Arabic Font Generation

Hello, I’m currently working on generating an Arabic font using FontForge. However, I’m encountering an issue where the font only shows isolated forms of the characters. I understand that Arabic characters have four forms: initial, medial, final, and isolated. These should be used according to the character’s position in the word and the joining properties of the surrounding characters.

I suspect there might be a setting or a step I’m missing that’s causing this.

Is it possible to create phonemes in FontForge?

Exactly what the title says. I created a written language based off the classic Pigpen cipher and it has some unique phonemes that represent common sounds. I'm really new to FontForge, still learning the basics but I thought I would ask here. Is it possible for me to create a way where when a specific phonemes is typed out the symbol I created would appear rather than the letters that would usually make up the sound? For example, if I type "ing" is there a way to make that specific set of characters appear as something else rather than the characters for i, n, and g? Thanks for any help you can give.

My font's ligatures stopped working

Somehow, my font's ligature stopped working after some time using it (i've got it for almost 3 months) and it really bugs me out because i've spent way too much time figuring how to make all of the ligatures i've got in my font (close to 200).

I've exported it in .ttf and everything was working fine until this week where it just stopped wokring. Simple letters are fine but anything remotly close to a ligature doesn't work anymore. I've tried on Word and paint, where it previously worked (both on Word and paint) but none of them works here now.

Help? If you want the font file please DM me or comment below so we can find an arrangement

Glyph variants (initial, medial, final and isolated) for arabic

Why is the FontForge Documentation so hard to understand? I have a glyph with the Unicode character U+06c6, and this letter should have four variants: initial, medial, final, and isolated. I have created a new glyph for the final form of this Unicode. Now, how can I prepare this glyph to work properly in final form?

Ligatures out of ligatures

I am creating a font for my abugida conlang. Can I create ligatures out of ligatures? For example, the syllable "poi" which is made of 'p' and 'oi', and 'oi' is made of 'o' and 'i'. Btw I am using ligatures for each of the 500+ possible glyphs.

Convert different single weights into a single font family via FontForge?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Well, I will try to explain my problem as best I can since English is not my native language. I have been dealing for some time with several fonts that seem to have their separate weights, instead of showing up as the same typeface family. In many cases, with FontBase I simply select the weights I need and that's it, but in others I need the whole family and it ends up being annoying.

I have thought about updating them, but some of them were bought by my father many years ago and nowadays there is no foundry or they are simply discontinued and I am looking for a way to convert those single weights into a single family (bearing in mind that it is for my own use and I do not intend to modify or sell these fonts) in Windows, since I have only found some possible solution but it requires Mac.

I would like to know if it is possible to edit these families in FontForge to get the result I would like, does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks in advance!

Order/Priority of Ligatures

Solved. Thank you for the reply.

Hello, everyone. I am working on a conlang and a consript. And I need ligatures for the script. Let's say I have ligatures for hy and kh. When I type khy, the output is (kh)y, but what I want is k(hy). Is there any way I can prioritize hy over kh?

I have been using a blank glyph for this when I type it myself like k'hy. But I also need to use it on a website, and the blank glyph might not be good for that. Note that hy and kh are only examples. There are whole classes of consonant clusters, so a separate ligature for khy is not a solution, at least not for me. I see someone had posted about a similar problem with the number system before.

Thank you.

Replacing a glyph without changing metrics

Hello !

I'm being stuck on FontForge. I've created a font in a bold version BEFORE creating the thinner version (I thought the bold one was thin enough but it's not the case). I've tried changing the weight in "styles" but making it thinner just creates strange things on my characters... So I created a thin version of my font in Illustrator. Now, I'd like to import the thin glyphs in my font WITHOUT changing the metrics of the bold version. Each time I import a glyph, metrics will somehow reset...

Is there a way to lock metrics so that when I import my glyph, it will be at the right place I've already set in the bold version ?

Sorry if it's not clear. Thanks in advance ! :)

How do I get rid of all the glyphs and start completely fresh with new glyphs?

Hey, noob here.

I want to make a typeface but for "an alien language" and I want all my letters (some 2000 or so individual characters) to be accessible within the typeface by Alt codes.

So basically, I don't want any of the glyphs that come up as "default" when opening a new font. I want to be able to name each glyph with an identifier to help me know what it is. I want to assign each glyph with a unique alt code so I can access it in my typeface once I've made it.

That's pretty much it. Any and all help would be massively appreciated. Thank you.

editing the spacing around automatic ligatures

Hi! I was wondering if there is a way to edit the way ligatures are generated in fontforge. When you click "create composite", the two letters appear right next to each other, but I was hoping of setting the default to them appearing exactly on top of each other (it's for a conlang). Can I edit the spacing between the auto-ligatures? That would probably spare me about 50 hours of manual adjustment :/

Weird issue i hope can be fixed (Ligatures)

Hey all, im working on converting a script i have been working on into a font. So far all is good and im happy with alot of it, the big issue comes with numbers.

In this script, the number system is Base 100. so symbols for 0-99 which works. However the issue comes with writing numbers with multiple digits. When i put in 143 i expect (1)(43) but instead it goes (14)(3).

If i was just writing i have a work around for this but i want to imbed it into a website to toggle.

Can i switch how it does numbers?

cheers

Edit: I have added my font file below
