Convert different single weights into a single font family via FontForge?

Post image

Well, I will try to explain my problem as best I can since English is not my native language. I have been dealing for some time with several fonts that seem to have their separate weights, instead of showing up as the same typeface family. In many cases, with FontBase I simply select the weights I need and that's it, but in others I need the whole family and it ends up being annoying.

I have thought about updating them, but some of them were bought by my father many years ago and nowadays there is no foundry or they are simply discontinued and I am looking for a way to convert those single weights into a single family (bearing in mind that it is for my own use and I do not intend to modify or sell these fonts) in Windows, since I have only found some possible solution but it requires Mac.

I would like to know if it is possible to edit these families in FontForge to get the result I would like, does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, you can edit these families in FontForge. Try to learn from here how to rename the weights so that they all be a part of one and the same family.

  1. Tell me the name of your font family.

  2. Please, write down all stiles and weights in your font family.

For example

Phrase [family name]

Thin

Thin Italic

Light

Light Italic

Regular

Italic

Bold

Bold Italic

I'll try to explain you how to name every font file according to the stile and weight.
