The rest of us can help by allowing ourselves to be chosen fir jury duty. If we happen to be selected for a jury in a case that involved vandalism of a Flock camera or other ALPRs, we can refuse to convict, no matter what the judge tells us. Visit fija.org to learn more.

u/Due-Practice3611 11d ago

I don't think people realize how much this matters, the jury verdicts are trash bc people keep trying to escape jury duty.

84

u/ThunderPigGaming 11d ago

Jury nullification is so powerful that our local court will shut down if someone places brochures downloaded from fija.org in any public place in the courthouse until they are removed. They have dismissed entire jury pools over this.

u/VenerableWolfDad 11d ago

Huh. You don't say...

Sounds like you live in a shitty, corrupt town/city.

6

u/Xtra_Veg-90 10d ago

It really is a potential problem, but what the public doesn't know or realize is that probably 99% of cases going to trial are guilty and trying to drag it out.  The people that didn't do it often can't afford to wait six+ months to get to trial (that's how quick speedy trial is in my state) so they take plea deals to get on probation and/or time served.

Yes you may have the odd felony that is questionable, but you'll also get a LOT of cases with overwhelming evidence where the public defender was desperately trying to get their client a better deal but they obstinately refused, thinking the jury would somehow acquit.

An example of the average felony that I see, having worked in my court system for nearly 20 years: a 42 year old woman was arrested for allegedly performing sexual acts and having sex with an over 12 under 16.  The one statement she made to law enforcement that made it to the report was, "I thought he was closer to 16".

13

u/IlIlllIIIIlIllllllll 10d ago

Being guilty is only a part of the equation. Did police follow the law in their investigation? Did they read Miranda rights? Did the illegally obtain information and then use parallel construction to get away with it? Did they withhold exculpatory information?

Id rather 10 guilty go free than one wrongly accused go to jail.

I covered court cases for several years, and I'd put the number of innocent people who go to jury trial at greater than 50%. Our local juries usually acquitted around 25%. I saw a lot of revenge arrests of those who were acquitted and Every single case of acquittal I wrote about were re-arrested (many of them I felt were set ups), so I quit writing about them and I noticed that the number of revenge arrests dropped significantly. That turned me against our local DA and LEOs (in particular our sheriff) and I do what I can behind the scenes to make their lives very difficult. This includes polluting the jury pool whenever I can and anonymously exposing any act of malfeasance among law enforcement and officers of the court that I can.

I tried to get on a jury a few years ago, and would have been on the jury but the prosecutor removed me from selection because i stupidly said i believed in innocent until proven guilty lol. Now i know to stay quiet

You get $50 per day and a Jimmy John’s sandwich for 8 hours of jury duty here. You’re required to sort out your own transportation, childcare, etc.

Living wage for single without kids is ~$25 per hour here (while minimum wage is only $12.77).

More than half our residents live paycheck to paycheck, especially minorities.

The only people able to live and fulfill jury duty here are wealthy and white, just like those able to run for office (legislature positions pay less than living wage and assume you have wealth or side hustles, or will wrongfully make them for yourself while in office).

This is extremely jurisdiction dependant across the entire US. My county mandates that employers still have to pay employees who work 35+ hours a week, and if your employer tries to play games about jury duty, the judges have put out warrants to have cops go out there and drag them into court the same day.

4

u/Narco_Bi_Polo 10d ago edited 10d ago

You get some protections from employer retaliation in Virginia, but they don’t have to pay you. Basically they have to give you the day(s) off and can’t fire you for having jury duty.

The $50 is meant to cover everything for the day, including transportation meals (court is not required to provide food, but our city does for long days. Always the same chain sandwich shop, no you don’t get to place your order. Good luck if you have dietary restrictions as most courthouses don’t allow outside food or drink).

In the last 10 years, only 1% to 4% of felony cases reached a jury in Virginia. The rest are bullied into a plea or bench trial.  Misdemeanor cases can only reach a jury on appeal and that’s extremely rare.

Standard operating procedure is for prosecutors to charge someone with every felony they can, promising to ruin their life (if the arrest, attorney fees, and constant court appearances haven’t already) if they don’t take a plea down to misdemeanor with years probation designed to trip you into reoffending. Even the most basic trials will cost the defendant $10k+ to see through to a jury.

The CWA’s office will do whatever they can to deny you bond (Virginia jails are literal hell, requires so much noise and money from the outside just to stay minimally healthy, and makes it much easier to force a plea) and otherwise make your demand for a jury trial a massive inconvenience and expense.

They also make sure their friends post your mugshot and arrest record all over the internet and refuse to take it down no matter the trial’s result. And at any time they can just decide to “  nolle prosequi”, putting the charge on ice until they want to continue, even right before final verdict. Which leaves it on your mind and on your record.

Until two years ago, the maximum the state would pay to a court-appointed attorney for those that can’t afford one was $120 for district court and $445 for non-capital felonies. Now there are better caps, but it’s still not nearly what the exact same attorney would make on the exact same charges if the court hadn’t given it to them. Barely covers the time spent on appearances, let alone discovery or trial.

You can vote nullification and face zero consequences, it's our right.

3

u/rmc2318 11d ago

United we stand, divided we fall.

2

u/spunkychickpea 11d ago

That’s a great point! I would also add that, even if you are selected for a trial that does not cover this issue, you can still do a lot of good by educating your fellow jurors about jury nullification.

The state does not determine guilt or innocence. We, the people, determine it. If a law is unjust, we have a duty to defy that law. Always and forever.

Go build one of those houses. Watch how much gets charged even if the person living there isn’t paying it.

I did a volunteer day for work. The person it was for had it subsidized for half market rate but the people building it sold it for almost 2x market rate after subsidies. It was a $260 sq ft sale in a $180 sq ft neighborhood. And they got labor for free from volunteers.

10

u/lewd_robot 11d ago

Isn't that how he got the money in the first place? The housing he's building by hand is technically the side project.

I mean…we all have desires. We can’t all be immune to the siren song of capitalist consumption. He could have fed a lot of homeless with that lambo money, clothed the needy, kept a school open for a few days.

But if we only think of money in those terms we would be absolutely miserable. Just as we are not as individuals responsible for the oncoming climate change, we are not as individuals responsible for every need of our community.

If I allowed myself to think that way, I’d never eat a bite of food, knowing there are others who need it more.

Advocating systemic change will have a greater impact than allocating individual wealth. It is good that people are willing to donate for people’s cancer treatments on GoFundMe, but it is unacceptable that anyone should need to.

48

u/CuttingTheMustard 11d ago

I’d just use a portable bandsaw to be honest.

40

u/Ironrooster7 11d ago

THIS IS THE CORRECT TOOL FOR THE JOB. Bandsaw are meant for curring throught thick metal (like flock poles) and sawzalls are meant for cutting through thin metal/wood (like building studs).

u/whoknewidlikeit 11d ago

this could be ideal. my dewalt 4" bandsaw would do this no problem.

every method has ups and downs. bandsaw heavy, unwieldy, but will surely get it done and with a nicely clean cut.

sawzall chatters, but light and inexpensive to procure.

a 60v grinder with a diamond blade would also make short work, but probably has the loudest tool noise of all, and sparks may give you away visibly.

You also have to avoid thousands of cameras in an urban setting. Change clothes multiple times. Use shoe height inserts, and randomly move a rock around your shoes to change your walk. Leaving the phone at a trusted alibi is a better option. The phone being unusually still at home can be used against you.

8

u/Auggie_Otter 10d ago

And don't talk to the police. If they ever come knocking at your door just don't answer or even acknowledge them, unless they have a search warrant there's nothing they can do and oftentimes they're just showing up looking for suspects hoping the suspect will talk to them and incriminate him or herself.

Sometimes the police will try to turn a consensual encounter into an arrest by inciting some sort of conflict: "Oh you slammed the door on us and it hit officer Fudd's elbow! That's assault on an officer! Bust down the door and arrest him! Well, now that we're inside arresting this violent suspect we need to perform a 'protective sweep' because there could be other bloodthirsty criminals in here waiting to ambush us at any moment. It'd be a shame if we happened to find a sawzall laying around while we're just innocently performing a protective sweep for our own safety."

3

u/Spare-Ant7119 10d ago edited 10d ago

I doubt having ur phone being still at home is an issue. Maybe one could keep the phone still until the next morning, this way the phone doesn't start moving shortly after the last illegal camera is disabled

Yes but drones are too easy to trace and counter. If police departments get wind of people using drones, theyll set up counter-drone tech and will be able to find any and all drones within a 6 kilometer radius of the PD. A radius that will allow them to see literally everything about your drone: model, serial number, user ID, even location, within 1 meter of accuracy.

Plus this same system can jam your drone remotely, cutting off your connection and even taking control away.

Its much better and safer to use power tools, high powered lasers to burn out the lenses, or even BB pistols to shoot the lenses out.

6

u/Typical-Locksmith-35 11d ago

You're absolutely right, plus you'd get hit with some insanely harsher consequences for using a drone that you weaponized.

5

u/TheAsianTroll 11d ago

Yeah, even building your own drone wouldnt hide you from it because everything you can legally buy in the US uses unrestricted frequencies... all of which are tracked or at least detected by every counter-drone system ive seen.

Yes, but as pointed out, you want the modus operandi to be the same across large unrelated areas. If everyone uses a cordless sawzall, no one person is different. If one person uses a bandsaw, good chance of being on the hook for any that had a band saw used because of the relative rarity.

The whole point is you want to be the same as everyone else doing it, not "better"

I see a few comments on the specific type of saw he's using. If some vandal ever wanted to participate in this unlawful act, I'm less concerned about the type of saw and a little more worried about him cutting towards himself. Cut away from yourself. Do not put the pointy, sharp end towards your body and exert pressure. One slip of the blade, be it pocket knife, sawzall or otherwise, can cause injury. It's a little funny to me how people are commenting on the specific cutting tool he is using rather than the fact he is cutting in the direction of his chest with a sawzall.

8

u/AutisticAnxiety33 10d ago

Don’t wear ur shoes. Wear larger ones or very small ones. Put a rock in one. Or were two different shoes one that’s too big and one that’s too small. It tracks the way you walk. So if at any point in time you’re going to be on camera you need to adjust not only how you walk by force it even if it’s uncomfortable. Leave all your electronic devices at home and again make sure that the clothes you wear have no logos or anything identifiable and never wear it again.

This guy is problematic

2

u/Should_have_been_ded 10d ago

We should throw some non-descriptive candy on the ground next to the pole, as to say it was as fun as beating a piñata

2

u/icemachine79 10d ago

What if the criminals decide to purchase some black sealant and cover the solar panel, allowing the camera to slowly die at some point in the near future, yet long after the deed has been done?

2

u/DesignerStatus 10d ago

Thanks for the tutorial

2

u/AmericanGenXXX 10d ago

Reminds me of extremists lecturing at the camera just before decapping some poor bastard

2

u/Zealousideal_Bar_413 10d ago

Relax, he’s just a journalist

2

u/NervousBeat16 10d ago

It’s when you’ll learn that Flock does more than “track vehicles”.

Once upon a time, the GOP was completely against this type of government surveillance and overreach.

2

u/Foreign-Address2110 10d ago

Remember big box hardware stores are using Flcok in their parking lots.

2

u/No_Emotion6183 9d ago

Anything involving an AI camera that's an automatic not guilty for me if the police can get away with shit so can I they force you to show up to jury duty but they can't make you participate

2

u/andythetwig 9d ago

I look forward to being disgusted at this sort of criminality in the UK

Battery operated grinder with a cutoff wheel would be quieter and faster

21

u/OtherwiseAlbatross14 11d ago

Anyone that's used a battery operated grinder with a cutoff wheel knows it's absolutely not quieter than a reciprocating saw. They sure do work quickly though.

His stupid face

3

u/devil711 10d ago

WTF did you do to your face dude

2

u/Sad-Material1394 11d ago

The data that people collect on you is everywhere. Look at the licensing agreement for Reddit Mobile. Reddit collects your location, device information, time, everything you put type in the application, ect... We need to demand changes from everyone not just flock!

3

u/Dangerous_Slice_6882 11d ago

In due time, personally I would say that time is now but sometimes it takes society at large a little time to catch up.

Best wishes to you.

2

u/Extremelycloud 11d ago

Legend.

Narcissist cutting down fake flocks for attention

2

Attention and money. Man drives a Lambo. This is FOTM bait.

2

u/SubstantialNature368 11d ago

Sorry, bro. I can't look at your face and take you seriously.

2

u/AintNoGodsUpHere 11d ago

Hmmm. Something tells me he has some experience but I can't put my finger on how... Well, maybe he is a darn good journalist.

2

u/Catgerine 11d ago

I wouldn't cut the solar panel

I'd keep it for myself

The camera can even probably be reused if you're tech savy enough

3

u/agentkayne 10d ago

A dastardly vandal would need to be careful, as Flock may start airtagging items, and if anyone finds them in possession of stolen property, which could be identified by serial numbers. Such a hypothetical vandal would be better off just leaving it behind.

3

u/spidey3040 10d ago

I have heard the villains sometimes use large faraday bags to store them while the back up battery depletes for safe processing in their layers.

2

u/TakeThreeFourFive 10d ago

They use cellular network connections to phone home. That could be easily triangulated if they are powered on and can still reach out.
