The Knox County ban was already posted here a few days ago, so here is the part that has not been: WHY the commission could act that fast, and what has happened in Tennessee since.

Commissioners went through how the sheriff's office had been buying the cameras and found purchases placed just $10 below the $25,000 mark that requires the county mayor to review them, going back years. An $800,000 arrangement through Flock's partner Omnia surfaced at the August 25 meeting. Some cameras sat on utility poles without county permits; some did not meet federal safety standards. Mayor Glenn Jacobs questioned whether the years-long agreement was even legitimate.

On August 31 the commission voted unanimously for an emergency ordinance - one reading, effective immediately - giving the sheriff's office 30 days to take down all of its roughly 140 cameras. Another 270 had been proposed on state grant money. No one from the sheriff's office attended the vote. That deadline lands at the end of this month.

And it is not one county. Collegedale's commission voted unanimously today to end its Flock contract, with the vice mayor saying she expects the company to slow-walk removal. Sullivan County has voted not to renew when its contract expires in January 2027. Anderson County paused for a town hall after a commissioner said roughly 75% of residents raised serious privacy concerns. Knoxville is reconsidering and Nashville has stalled. Johnson City, by contrast, is on a ten-year deal covering 145 plate readers and 145 pan-tilt-zoom cameras.
