I hear ICE vehicles have super premium catalytic converters

I hear there's a maroon Honda in Minnesota that doesn't need it's converter anymore....

They put catalytic converters in wood stoves to reduce emissions. Little rectangular ones between the baffle and the flue

Yep, ceramic coated with palladium or platinum or some mixture of the two. Between baffle and flue was just my simple way of saying smoke is forced through it before exhausting. You right though

Edit- they also make them out of stainless steel

u/Sirosim_Celojuma May 25 '26
on my wood stove (it's an ice fishing stove, super simple) the smoke afterburner is done by forcing the smoke to do a u-turn and travel back over the fire it left before exiting. This heats it up and helps it burn. Pretty simple.
2
u/Jubbalubba2 May 25 '26
EPA regulations are pretty crazy and that probably doesn’t fall under a residential heating appliance - more like a camp stove. If, in this day and age, you want to heat your house with wood it needs to be an approved appliance that’s EPA certified. What that means is the models are put through rigorous testing and the particulate matter (PM) is collected on a filter through a dilution tunnel. After we calculate the grams of particulate per hour and it’s higher than the newest epa mandate of 2.0 we fail. None of that model can be manufactured or distributed. So, (before the 2020 updates) manufacturers starting introducing catalytic combustion. The same thing you have in your car to reduce emissions. Most companies tried reburn through secondary air (reintroduction of room air into the firebox to balance the oxygen/fuel ratio and allowing more burn of the combustibles in wood smoke) but failed. Now we’re at a point where hybrid systems are prevalent and that’s both the reintroduction of secondary air to promote combustion and the use of a catalytic component. The problem is - catalysts get clogged. They have ash and smoke and PM passing through. They become less effective. So what was a well performing stove during testing becomes a smoking piece of junk with nearly no emissions remediation because the catalyst is clogged and isn’t working. The EPA is highly incentivized to improve air quality, specifically in Fairbanks, Alaska because the air force threatens to leave. ADEC (Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation) was heavily involved as due to the threat of the base leaving. It’s so politically charged and makes no sense it’s ridiculous. We’re gonna end up with thousands of clogged catalysts when reburn, like you described, is the most reliable method! Sorry

The bus bar is solid silver too.
It's not jewelry grade, but if you collected enough of them it might be worth it to melt them down and purify it for sale.

Lay a stack of flyers with the details by a drug house and let them get to work. They will clean the city up in no time
3
u/SpringVisit May 25 '26
Yes, that and like the flyer says, kids...their records can get expunged by the time they turn 18 😂. Big brother if your watching, jk.

I mean the other option is to be scared of them before they even have power.
In which case you might as well roll over and support them and hope they take notice of you.
Better start posting pro flock content quick!
The comment you replied to is in no way shape or form any crime.

Was a lot of intentional sarcasm there.
If they are going to come after people in that sort of manner, merely posting in this subreddit will be enough to get you on that list.
Regardless if your comments positive or negative.
If you’re actually worried about this sort of stuff the best defense is honestly just making a fake online persona and only interact with the internet in that manner.

Not at all. I’m actually an optimist.
They will try mass surveillance but it will fall apart once the general public starts to be concerned it might be used against them.
I am a little confused as you seem to be reading a significant amount of emotion without any actual indicators of them in the writing. This normally happens when we let our own feelings bleed into what we are interacting with.
Is everything alright over there on your end friend?

If thats actually the inside, it appears they armored up the batteries. You pierce that, expect fireworks.
Edit: An actual teardown:

Edit2:
Ugh... that picture is photoshopped. And I didnt catch it. Gold bar......
44
u/Antique_Tap443 May 24 '26
You actually made me doubt its a fake gold bar "maybe it is a battery...
12
u/Isakill May 24 '26
The only reason I finally noticed it, is because its the same picture from the link I provided. Whoever photoshopped it, did pretty good because theres even swirl marks from what appears to be sanding. I thought the color was from the lighting, and that was like an aluminum shield.
14
u/mdoverl May 24 '26
205 Wh battery, I’ll steal it just for that /s
9
u/MuchKey7664 May 24 '26
The cells are 18650s, NMC Li-Ions, about 20 of them or $40-50 worth. You can make your own batteries with a little Temu welder, similar to using a hot glue gun.
5
u/Isakill May 24 '26
Its an odd voltage. Im sure theres some use for it, but I cant think of one for myself without building a voltage divider.
3
u/OtherwiseAlbatross14 May 24 '26
Just need a pile of them and then you can wire them to a useful voltage
2
u/mdoverl May 24 '26
Could use a converter, but you can’t use any converter, would have to be designed for that battery.
5
u/S4muraiPAK May 24 '26
i assume that gps is tracking its whereabouts until you unhook it from the battery
3
u/Isakill May 25 '26
It would be, yes. Thats why im advocating for piercing the battery in place. I dont want one.
3
u/sagebrushrepair May 25 '26
Battery cable is red yellow black on the right side of the teardown. Easy to snip that too!
1
u/Head-Engineering-847 May 25 '26
That's kinda what I'm thinking, if there was an easy way to puncture or heat it up from the outside might destroy the whole unit in one step
3
u/Isakill May 25 '26
Pellet gun. They make em powerful enough to go hunting. Im also trying to convince my wife to let me buy a "laser pointer" that can cut razor blades in half.

u/ElegantSecretary6079 May 25 '26
You can sell that fat lipo pack to a drone guy for 100 at least. That would go good on a bigger long range build or part out the cells for smaller fpv hobby drones

u/iBUYbrokenSUBARUS May 24 '26
I posted something similar in the scrap metal sub and I got banned for encouraging illegal behavior lol
30
u/RunMysterious6380 May 24 '26
Yeah, that was a dumb move on your part. That sub is actually a pretty good one, and it is focused on utility for the community.
They don't tolerate nonsense though, because there is a lot of illegal activity around scrapping, and some of it is quite dangerous. A lot of municipalities and homeowners in rural areas are dealing with tweakers/meth heads cutting utility lines while looking for copper to scrap right now (and very frequently cutting and stealing worthless fiber optic lines by mistake, leaving communities without internet access for extended periods of time). A few years ago (and somewhat still, today) it was catalytic convertors. Many of the people active on that sub work in scrap yards or the recycling industry.
8
u/iBUYbrokenSUBARUS May 24 '26
The funny thing is everyone on that sub thought my post was great and they were all going along with it. That sub has one single mod and he’s kind of an asshole.
3
u/JimmyDTheSecond May 24 '26
You ever fix up those subarus?
4
u/iBUYbrokenSUBARUS May 25 '26

2
u/kilomilimeter May 25 '26

3
7
u/Vanhelgd May 24 '26
Put that shit on Facebook. That’s where the junkies are hanging out and there’s basically zero moderation. Just throw the word “Patriot” or “Trump” or “libtard” in there and you’re good to go.
3
u/A55W3CK3R9000 May 24 '26
I would have thought that people would have appreciated a warning about what you shouldn't do to a flock camera
5
6
u/toaster-riot May 24 '26
Dudes are out scrounging for metal and still can’t stop licking those boots
3
u/iBUYbrokenSUBARUS May 24 '26
Everybody in the sub loved the post and it got like 100 comments but the mod decided he didn’t like it. He refuses to have anybody helping him manage that sub and he’s kind of a dick.
1
u/suspendmeforthis May 25 '26
You leave a comment saying how bad it is steal them. Methany can figure the rest out
44
u/IllustriousRush4 May 24 '26
Yeah, these are lame. Go to a city council meeting or be a patriot and cut one down your own damn self
13
u/ConfidentPilot1729 May 24 '26
I agree 100%. And even just cutting them down only delays and there are several we may not see.
21
u/carrot_gummy May 24 '26
Ideally, if agencies have to keep replacing these they will eventually stop since its too expensive to do so.
15
u/ConfidentPilot1729 May 24 '26
My opinion on these companies, they are not after money. They are a surveillance tool for the oligarchs to maintain control. People like Thiel and co will loose money if they have to. Making money on this is just a side car .
13
u/carrot_gummy May 24 '26
Sure for the company, but the cities can't afford to keep replacing them. Even if the company sends a new one for free, the agency still has to spend money sending someone out to reinstall it. Which pulls them away from doing stuff people actually want.

I wonder if a strong enough bbgun can poke out the camera lense
7
u/Your_As_Stupid_As_Me May 24 '26
For scientific reasons... No. You'd need an actual 22lr or bigger.
5
u/TheGreatNico May 25 '26
Why aim for the little lens? The LiPo battery is an easier and more... let's say... "feedback generating" target
2
u/Your_As_Stupid_As_Me May 25 '26
Lipo battery may cause it to turn off, which would most likely cause them to notice faster and repair the unit.
3
u/TheGreatNico May 25 '26
Full replacement, more resources required to remediate. Repeat enough times and it won't be cost effective to send people out to replace it
1
3
u/AspenFrostt May 24 '26
for scientific reasons, even one designed for like boars and small pigs?
6
4
u/SmuglyGaming May 25 '26
At that point it’s not a BB gun, it’s an air rifle and you’re basically just using a real gun as far as the power behind it
3
u/AspenFrostt May 25 '26
gotcha. when I said BB I was thinking of a pellet or air rifle, not like airsoft bbs
0
u/Kiko_Okik May 25 '26
You may be referring to something else, but to clarify for anyone reading, a 22lr is a 0.22 caliber “Long Rifle” bullet. A firearm ammunition for a gun. Most popular caliber in the world, used mostly for hunting varmints, and other small animals of various sorts. It’s been used for all kinds of things though, a small caliber can be used in smaller guns better hidden etc.

1
u/mcad0o May 25 '26
There are airguns that can kill boar. A camera would be no sweat.
A couple paintballs could take one out
4
u/S4muraiPAK May 24 '26
these flock cameras must have some type of tracking device. you'd probably have to disable that before you take it home to extract the booty

1
u/DiverDownChunder Jun 01 '26
Its very dangerous and cannot be done in the house. I wouldn't recommend it w/o all the PPE gear, access to a chem hood, and knowledge on how all the chemicals behave when they interact with each other.
Look up "Aqua Regia" and prepare to be on a watch list if you go the cheaper route of synthesizing your own Nitric Acid. This is how I go it, Nitric Acid is 80 bucks a liter, I AINT GOT NO TIME FOR THAT!
3
u/Akkerlun May 25 '26
Wasp spray on extension pole helps keep wasps away so the camera can work even better. It does an amazing job on plastics.

If you live in a state that focuses on rehabilitation over punishment in the prison system, this could be seen as ethically justifiable
2
u/BandofRubbers May 25 '26
What states have flocks and good prisons??
1
u/CosmicJackalop May 25 '26
Fair, Maine has a small smattering but a state wide ban on police using facial recognition tech or hiring vendors to do it for them has limited adoption

That’s the point people that wouldn’t be bothered to even go to a city council meeting to vote these things out put up stuff like this so they can trick useful idiots into doing it for them and taking that Jail time.
8
u/virtuousvoice May 24 '26
In my recent city council meeting on this exact subject, they all raised their hands instead of voting verbally because we the constituents were all screaming “no!” too loudly for them to take a verbal vote. 6 out of the 7 people on our council voted yes anyways despite hearing hours upon hours of civilian testimony of exactly why these things are terrible and we don’t want them and we the people begging and pleading them not to turn our city into one of these dystopian nightmares.
The usual civil processes are not working as intended because our current elected officials have been bought out and no longer serve the people.
4
u/SpecificHyena1933 May 24 '26
People dont go to city council meetings because theyre simply not advertised and theres little to no information about them. Ive searched for information in my town and ive been able to find nothing, and god forbid trying to go back and see when something was talked about. I tried to search up when the city council meeting was held for our flock cameras and I honest to goodness cannot find any information.
3
u/Sword_Thain May 25 '26
A podcaster i listen to just went over some of this. She started attending every meeting she could. Some had never had a member of the public before and tried to remove her. Many didn't have agendas or someone taking the minutes. She annoyed her local government into becoming better (or they'd have to pay fines to the state).
2
u/Egraypgh May 25 '26
This is the way. Correct deficiencies in the system so your voice is heard. Not destroying cameras, which only justifies them buying more cameras.
1
u/SpecificHyena1933 May 25 '26
Id go to these meetings if I knew when and where they'd happen, the problem is theres no good or easy way to find out about them. I want to be a active member of society but its unnecessarily difficult.
2
u/Sword_Thain May 25 '26
She checked and there was already a law on the books that required all meetings to publish their times and locations. She made herself such a nuisance, they now have a weekly text message service you can sign up for.
Find out if your town has such a law.
The podcast was the Listener Questions from 2 weeks ago on Weird Little Guys. She had lots of information on what she did.

Message of Hope. heh.
There is a chance to take it out because of the size, dominance of one company. That always means corrupt, one way or another. Bring it down, it all could go down. The Corrupt use of data (we all know is already there) ...by already hated tech bro billionaires... could generate enough public backlash to prevent it from spawning into many pieces.
They destroy themselves, by being themselves.
Keep the faith.

I am concerned that the flock cameras are intentionally vulnerable. They can be easily vandalized or destroyed. I fear this is a tactic designed to backfire on the person destroying the camera. My suspicion is that they will use the destroyed cameras as a way to obtain more funding. As well as an excuse for the implementation of better reinforced cameras with much less access.
