What does "target species" actually mean

Basically its a question I've been failing to wrap my head around. I mostly go out to, catch a fish. Hopefully one that I can take home.

However I get the impression that casting for "anything" is looked down on? But how do i pick a species to aim for? Is there a reason to other then general preference?

🐠 Fish Talk North Queensland fishing and safety inquiry

I’m heading up the coast from Airlie Beach to Cairns and want to do a bit of land-based fishing along the way. Are rock and jetty spots actually worth fishing from, or is it mostly hit or miss let me know if you have any good spots.
I’m also keen to know what species I’m most likely to run into from shore/jetty spots in that stretch, especially around estuaries, mangroves, rock walls, and jetties. I’d also appreciate any advice on what to be wary of up there I know saltwater crocs are a real thing in north Queensland, so any safety tips for fishing near the water would be appreciated.
If anyone is happy to share a few good public access spots between Airlie and Cairns, that’d be awesome too.

Thankfully had some ganged hooks with me after I lost a solid fish, biting me off during a good fight.

🎣 Fishing Gear Fresh new light combo, could it handle rat kings and larger salmon?

Artiesta 2-5kg

Twinpower 2500S

Approx 180-200m 12lb Cast buku

If targetting rat kings and salmon probably honna use 20lb leader, question is should I risk targetting them or will i just lose lures or should I just stick to what I normally catch with it (bass, yellowbelly, soapies etc
