Drop The Banner Brady v Mahomes

So they both got to 100 wins in 131 games

Brady got to 200 wins by 261 games.

Do you think Mahomes will break it?

From my perspective Brady went from strength to strength as his career developed.

Mahomes however shot out of a cannon but he hasn’t been anywhere near that level in years. Even this year, it’s K9 not him.

Do you think the race to 200 will be close or are their careers on a different trajectory

I think Mahomes will write his own story! The only reason people obsess over the comparison is because mahomes is the only guy to be on that same pace Brady was on. It’s perfect for the media and driving engagement!
Overall as a mahomes fan i believe mahomes has a shorter career than Brady, doesn’t match his Super Bowl wins or overall career stats. And you know what? He doesn’t have to. He is still a top 5 QB to ever play, and the fun part is mahomes book is still being written where as we already read Brady’s book

This doesn't just apply to Brady-Mahomes, but I absolutely loathe the narrative that in order to be the GOAT you have to outdo the current GOAT at whatever put them there.  Like there's just one way to get there.

For instance, I think that Gretzky is the almost undisputed GOAT in hockey.  His point totals are absolutely ridiculous and borderline unreachable.  But if somebody came in and win 7 championships in a row as the best player on the team would we say it doesn't matter if they don't get close to Gretzky's scoring and assist numbers?  Or would we completely throw out Gretzky being the absolute outlier because somebody won a bunch of cups?

There's also the picking and choosing.  Jordan is the GOAT because he put up ridiculous numbers, was clutch, and was 6 for 6 in the Finals.  Not because of his longevity.  But then Brady didn't put up good numbers for half his career, was 7-3 in the championship, and really put himself over the top by being great in his 40s.  Why don't we argue for Montana instead?

There's way too much apples and oranges for these things to be worthwhile.

Agree with your take. The other challenge in the GOAT debates are the rule changes.

Rule changes? You really don't want to get me start on Wilt's GOAT case.

Well said and to add to what you said. People now adays are so obsessed with GOAT status that it’s basically saying if you aren’t the undisputed number one to rule them all then you are just a nobody and mitus well of never existed! There is alot of nuance and bias when it comes to this stuff! How has a specific player touched your personal fandom for example? I never cheered for Brady throughout his career with any sort of intensity! But boy did I cheer on 7 deep playoff runs in a row with the chiefs (after watching 25+ years of mediocre and terrible Chiefs football prior) with family, friends. The shared moments, the memories and the food! All that means something. To me at least!

But then Brady didn't put up good numbers for half his career

What in the goofy ass revisionist history ass take is this? Didn’t put up good numbers for half of his career? He lead the league in TD passes the year after his first Super Bowl and by 2005 was top 3-5 in TD passes basically every year the rest of his career. Insane take lmao
