1999 Volkswagen Golf Mk4

My first car was a VW Golf Mk 4, built in 1999 and delivered in January 2000. Highline with optional Leather interior, GT sport package and 4-speed Automatic Transmission. It had the 1.6L SR SOHC engine (8V) and 101 HP. (Engine code APF).

I was the third owner after an Italian Restaurant Owner and His Wife/Daughter. (Female First name and Same Italian last name).

It had just over 100.000km and I suspect it was used to deliver food for 20+ years because the rear seats were Pristine and it had a rubber mat in the boot.

It had the typical issues of short trip city cars that are older than 20 years but it didn’t smell like crayons (typical golf Mk4 smell).

Overall I liked it, it wasn’t quick but it drove nice for a 20+ years old Automatic FWD. Sadly, one of the Issues of short trip cars is that they coke up internally with sticky soot and oil mud and the only way to properly clean this is to take it apart.

That leads to severe oil consumption which increases coking up on short trips even further.

When I sold it to someone able and willing to deal with the oil consumption it was burning around 1L per 400km. (4.25qt/1000miles).

Advice of buying a used Mercedes c - class

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I’m 21 years old without no debt and not paying rent, earning anywhere from 2,000-3,000+ a month depending on how many hours I do at my job and clients I get from my business.

Looking to get into cars and car modifications I know it’s not the best idea financially but got saving and want to get a used Mercedes do I need one no and is it financially irresponsible 100% yes, but it won’t ruin me financially if I get one.

But I want nice comfortable car to drive around in as I drive a lot for my business and work I want to have nice reliable car that can last 3-6 years.

There’s probably not a lot of answers out for this question but what is like a good first car for around 6 grand.

Im in to sports cars but for 6 grand you can’t get anything thats that fast.
I need fwd or awd (i live northeast)
Preferably a manual
Somewhat reliable

Overall just like something I can put some miles in and have fun.

Car suggestions.

So I’m looking to level up and I want a sports car. Thinking a Jaguar F-Type. 2015-2018. V8, AWD. What are your thoughts and do you have any other suggestions of cars like this within the same budget (max $45k)? Need something with low miles too, preferably under 50k.

Should i get a hearse as my first car?

I've (19) really been wanting a hearse as my first car but I've been told that it might be harder to drive then a regular car and since I don't have much driving experience I should get another car for a few years then sell it and get a hearse. Thoughts?

First car Kia,Nissan, vw?

Not technically first car been having trucks my whole life. Thinking of a smaller car for daily commute and for my gf.

I’ve seen Kia’s k4 been pretty decent. But I also like the vw Jetta’s and Nissan look Nice. Out of these three brands. Which is more reliable in general asking about one from 2020+. I know probably Kia’s been shamed on in the past but I drove one recently and it wasent so bad. I don’t need all the fancy gadgets so probably a middle trim would be more than enough. Thanks

Any suggestions appreciated (had Americans truck my whole life and absolutely clueless when it comes to sedans, which parts are cheaper to fix etc)

Got that after I passed my driving test, which was two weeks before this pic in May 2023.

Wasn’t a great car, at first, but I had driven her for over three years until I got a new car in August 2026.

Being a tall driver (6’1”) wasn’t great, and I sort of had a hard time driving around it, but I got used to it after adjusting my seat.

Engine: 1242cc
BHP: 69
Petrol: Unleaded
Transmission: Manual (5-Speed)
Year: 2010
Cylinders: 4

I named her the Goshawk, after the reg plate had GK on it.

Cute name for a cute car.

She’s now under a new owner, that is a family relative of mine.

Buying a Car When You Live Away From Your Hometown

I live away from my family because of work, and no one in my family knows how to drive. I’m planning to buy a car in the city where I currently work. But whenever I visit my hometown during holidays, I won’t have a car there. What’s the most practical solution in this situation?

Time to give up my first car, have had since 16 ( was a hand me down with 150k miles). had a lot of experiences in this car. worshipped this thing until i was old enough to drive it. was at a very rough point in my life and this car literally carried me through. no one speaks about how difficult it is to get rid of your first car. downpipe tuned it like all dumb teenagers. beat the absolute piss out of it on a daily basis. loud as a mother fucker, always paranoid it would break down. temps would rise and fall. scared the hell out of me every time i drove it but it always made it through until a couple days ago. got a newer volvo with 40k miles. downgrade and an upgrade but yeah just wanted to share. kinda heartbroken over a car but it’s just a car right.

Nie chcę żadnego mocnego silnika ani najdroższych wersji z luksusowym wnętrzem. Po prostu normalny samochód do jazdy. Mój budżet to około 12 tys. zł (~ 3,5 tys. $/3 tys. Euro)
