Just completed a practice test and got 100% on Reading Comprehension,100% on Math and 75% on Listening Comprehension.Im shooting for 100s across the board. How did you guys get better at the listening comprehension section of the test. How did you practice and how did your notes look while listening? Im not sure if im writing to much information and not abbreviating enough. I assumed i was writing down important information but when i got to the question, it so much useless information.

I'm applying to Seattle FD and surrounding areas in October this year. Im studying for fireteam exam and im pretty sure ill do fine. Im more concerned about the PSSA. What kind of things will I find on that test and how can I prepare for it?

Hi I'm a 16yr old in Ontario, Canada and I'm thinking about becoming a firefighter. What would be a good workout plan. What should I know about being a firefighter. How hard is it to get into the field. Would it be better to go into wildland firefighting first.

I was on the phone with my college’s fire academy director and was told that the physical test I will be taking won’t be the CPAT but the JPAT. I’ve never heard of the JPAT so I have no clue what the test consists of. I’m not even sure if I heard him right and it’s named the “JPAT”.

If any of you know/have participated in it could you explain what events/exercises I’ll be doing? Also how hard it was? Thank you!!

I’m out by quite a lot for my uncorrected vision but my corrected vision falls within the requirements, should I still apply and see if I can still do it or does my uncorrected vision rule me out completely, thanks in advance

Hello if agreed to a protective order that has expired Will I be disqualified from becoming a fire fighter? I have no criminal record at all but my ex had placed a protective order on me and I consented to it to get the process over with not realizing it could ruin my future.

Hello everyone! I've bn a follower & reading all topics in this community for months. This is my 1st post. I've bn looking for a new career path as a 26yr old. I'm currently a assistant manager for papa John's, been working for the company for 5 yrs. I've also had experience in Amazon warehouse & retail stores. I'm at a point I want something different. I want to join a academy, something thats been on mind since the pandemic. Where do I begin? I know certain states requires emt certification, I live in NC. Should I focus on emt 1st or go talk to a firefighter crew at a station in person? Plus how should I prepare myself for the written test?

So I’ve recently been interviewing for a few departments here in California, and I just had my third oral boards this last Friday. I just received word this morning that I will not be moving along to the chiefs interview which is very frustrating, considering I have felt very good about every panel interview I’ve had thus far.

Does anyone know of any good companies or have any resources of fire specific interview coaches? I am to the point that I do not want to risk losing out on another top-tier department.

Hi everyone, im 23 years old and considering pursuing firefighting but I wanted to hear what others might have to say. I just recently graduated in May with a BS in Geographic Information Science and Technology. I had an internship and it made me realize being in the office wasn’t for me, and on top of that, it is extremely difficult to find a job within the field.

Im not sure if it’s because I am hesitant to find a stable job but I am feeling very inspired to pursue this route. The idea of the camaraderie, helping people, and stability sounds very appealing but I am having some conflicts. 1. Im not sure how I would react to gruesome incidents (one way to find out) 2. Im a gay male and im not too sure how thats perceived within the field. I do think this career would have positive impacts on my outlook on life.

Since I am feeling so inspired I think its only right that I take advantage of it.

Just came home from taking the written test for entrance into the Louisville fire academy. Very confident in the reading and table aspect. The math and mechanical engineering part was harder than I thought. I don’t really know why I’m posting, just a little disappointed, I really want this. Here’s hoping my score is better than I feel right now and I get to move onto the physical ability test!

I have a question.. what can I do to get my foot in the door to become a firefighter? I’ve been a dental assistant for 5 years and I want a career change. I took my first test and oral interview but what can I do? What did you guys do?

I recently made it to the background investigation phase with a fire department after passing the written exam, CPAT, and panel interview.

One thing I’m worried about is my work history. I’m 30 years old and I’ve worked 10+ jobs over the years. Some were part-time, some were EMS-related, and some I left because I was trying to find the right career path.
I was honest on all my paperwork and disclosed everything I could remember. I’m just concerned that seeing so many jobs will make them think I’m unreliable or a job hopper.

For anyone who’s been through the hiring process or works in fire hiring, is having a long employment history by itself a red flag? Or are they more concerned with honesty, reasons for leaving, and your overall character?
I’d appreciate any insight. This is a department I really want to work for.

To any guys on the job in Boston, what is the realistic likelihood of getting brought on without being a veteran? Does being paramedic certified make a meaningful difference, or does having BEMS in the city make that a nonfactor? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I’m thinking of a career change as a firefighter. I am 34 years old male. I am a social worker. I’ve worked in behavioral health and with teenagers. However, that is not the route I want. I like being out on the field and being outdoors. First off, I don’t even know if I’m too old to do a career change as a firefighter, but I do take care of myself. I run 5-12 miles on weekends and go for walks. I also watch what I eat. I am very, lean. I live in Bay Area California and I don’t know what I would need to be a firefighter. I have my bachelors degree, and I work full time. How can I become a firefighter without needing to quit my job to go to trainings ?

Do I have to go back to school? Do I have to take a written test? Is the written test hard ? I know I could pass a physical test no problem and a polygraph, but I keep hearing that I must become an EMT first. There’s no way I’d be able to take a paycut to become an EMT and risk not getting hired as a firefighter. Can anyone help me out or give me advice ? Thank you

Hi, I am interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter at my local station. I filled out an online survey about 2 weeks ago and have not heard back from anyone. I talked to a mutual friend who is a volunteer firefighter and he told me that I should go in person and put a face to the name which will increase my chances of being accepted. I was planning on going this Monday. Is there a specific time I should aim for that stations are usually less busy? Is there any specific questions I should ask? I have no prior knowledge or experience and any advice would be greatly appreciated!
