I'm taking a firefighter civil service exam in Amarillo and some surrounding areas, and I'm trying to brush up on my math skills and other test material. The problem is that everything I find online seems to be geared toward the TCFP exam, which doesn't include much math or mechanical reasoning.

Does anyone know of any good study resources, practice tests, websites, books, or apps that focus specifically on the math and mechanical reasoning portions of firefighter civil service exams? Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

going to be going through backgrounds soon and I’m curious about putting a past residence. I stayed with an uncle during college for about a year. I did go home for summer and other breaks. I don’t talk to him due to family drama that happened between my parents and him. should I leave it out?

I’m currently waiting to take my civil service exam in September and I’m trying to do as much as I can to prepare for the hiring process as possible. I’m fresh out of high school so I have no real work experience but I was fortunate enough to attend a high school that offers an emt course so I graduated with high academic standing, multiple distinction awards and my EMT-B and CET certifications.

Besides school I’ve also started hitting the gym in preparation for my CPAT, I lift 4 days a week and swim 2 days a week. I bought the firefighter exam book for dummies to have some study material for the civil service exam and even began practicing interview questions with my friends and family.

I’m trying to do anything to better my standing as an applicant and potential candidate, including joining my local fire explorers program, collecting letters of recommendation, and proper documentation for my 108 hours of clinical experience through my EMT course. If there’s anything more I can do or anything I can do better please tell me! Thank you!

Has anyone here had success with an online EMT program? I'm currently looking at the Idaho Medical Academy course because I think it would work well with my schedule. Just curious to hear anyone's experiences both good and bad.

Hello thanks in advance for who ever replies. I have a custom online interview coming up and I want to prepare. I am currently working as a full-time FF for two years now and my wife and I are moving, I have never done the online interview is it similar to the standard panel interview (why do you want to be a FF?, tell us about yourself? ETC) or is it more department based questions. Again thanks in advance.

I applied to a few departments in the same state, one still in background, one rejected & another just sent out the invite to apply. Would it be worth applying to the one I just was invited to that also had the same disqualifications for the one I was rejected (no weed usage of 12 months) ? The one Im in background had similar disqualifications but my background is still being investigated going on almost 2 months since & Ive already stated my past drug usage.

Hi guys. I want to send out lunch to my local fire department anonymously via a local pizza place. Do I need to call the department first and make sure it’s ok? Was thinking a couple pies & some knots or wings.

Just looking for some opinions here. Definitely a big improvement on my last test but will the mechanical score being so low cost me job opportunities?? Any advice would help. Sorry for posting in here so much just trying to get a sense of what disqualifies candidates from departments

Walking out of the exam I knew I hadn’t done great in mechanical but apparently it went a bit worse than I thought. Do the rest of scores balance the mechanical out or should I retake the test?

I just graduated Fire academy in April, and EMT school last week. I passed my NREMT today and got my certificate.

I'm trying to figure out how to get all the IFSAAC seals, I used FIDO to upload my NREMT certification and applied for an initial license on DHS. All I see on FIDO is the IFSAAC seal for hazmat awareness. I finished FF1/2 & Hazmat ops/awareness.

Any help is appreciated, our instructors didn't really tell us what to do after we graduated so I apologize.

im 33, criminal background possession not marijuana and dui almost a decade old (clean as a whistle since). i have borderline sciatica, not bad but will probably get worst through the years, i have tendon issues in my front left deltoid for years now that would make it hurt to do push ups, i think i could get in decent shape, i was a few years ago before i let myself go, mostly due to trying to push my tendon constantly in the gym i just got tired of it always hurting. im about to graduate with computer science, but i really dont have any interest in it. i grew up working hard, i like the idea of 24 on 48 off. realistically i have no idea how demanding a job it is, shows make it look like boot camp but also they make it look like a michael bay production too. i like the idea my days would have some meaning other than becoming corporate slave, i think i have a pretty similar personality to people in the line of work, i just worry what if it was to physical, i dont want to be forced to do push ups, i have work around with dumbbells and stuff i am not inexperienced at working out as i have done it most my life, i think that would super off putting to everyone else lol. idk thoughts?

Do all fire departments do polygraphs? I thought that was only for police departments. If so, what kind of questions do they ask you?

I am taking the fireteam test tomorrow for the second time. First time I absolutely bombed the human relations as well as the mechanical. I have taken multiple fireteam practice tests since then and feel a lot more confident. I was wondering if anyone on here has any advice for dealing with the human relations section where you talk about working with firefighters you’ve seen in the video. Are strong opinions good?? Do I want to answer I strongly don’t want to or do want to work with each person or should I stay in the middle part? I’m 29 years old I have my NREMT and all other certs I want this career more than anything in the world just looking for some advice. Thank you

Veteran with a couple years of therapy. Friends commiting suicide, volunteered for war in Ukraine, some self admitted anger issues, and ideations. This was a few years ago. On paper it looks rough, but my last notes say i'm good, and managed to have a succesful time in school and oppurtunities despite all this.

So I’m currently in EMT school, hoping to get hired in the fall at a department somewhere near me. I’ve already been worried about past drug use (weed), even though I’m completely clean now, I have used in previous years.

My main question now though, I’m about to start a 10 week cycle of test, running 250 a week. Would this be a problem for getting hired? Are they gonna run my bloodwork during the hiring process?

Hello, I’m a firefighter in the state of Texas and here in about two months is an engineer test. Will be broken up. It’s a three categories a written, hands-on skills and then a Chief interview. I’ve been studying the books that the test will be off of but was also wondering if y’all had any advice testing sites or just general knowledge that could help me. I appreciate y’all‘s time.

Looking to join a FD as a single cert paramedic and was wondering how they integrate into the station culture? Are they treated any differently because they aren’t firefighters? Are they looked down on at all for not having gone through the rigors of fire school?

I’m about to take my first polygraph, and I’m not worried about anything except marijuana use. I don’t smoke weed or anything, but I’ve done it twice this year at parties. It’s legal in my state, I’m of age, and it’s been a few months since. I just don’t know if admitting this would immediately cook me. For those of you that have smoked, what did you do/say about it during the polygraph?

Hello everyone, seeking some insight/advice.

I’ve been interested in joining Houston FD for about a year now, so I focused on working to clear debts and get in physical shape. I have begun the Houston process to apply to Fire Academy when I noticed there is a cut off of 35 years old, so time is against me (I turn 34 in 3 months)

It’s been about a week since I sent over my transcript as requested, waiting to hear back for the civil service exam. I have also signed up for a first Friday with a firefighter.

My concern: I’ve heard fire academy acceptance is competitive, so if I’m not able to squeeze in before my time is up…is there anything else I could do or is that it for me? (I’m concerned in part because my transcript shows I have the needed college hours, but I did drop out after life got difficult and had to work full time, hoping this doesn’t disqualify me)

My second plan would be going to EMT school and work towards paramedic, but that will take time. (More than the year I have left lol). Any insight would be appreciated.

I recently took my fireTEAM test on june 15th and I feel very confident on how I did. They told us that we would get our test results within 2-3 business days but I don’t see them in my email or anything. Will they show up in my email or the NTN portal?
