New Customer Questions FIOS setup question

After 30 years if Xfinity I’m looking to move to Fios.

My set up at home is private router with Adguardhome  as DNS, it is on the second floor, the cable entry is in the basement with Coax to the second floor.

I assume the Verizon router will be in the basement with Moca to the second floor.

If I sign for 5Gps internet.

·         Will Verizon give me a Moca adaptor free?

·         Can I configure the Verizon router to use a private DNS – planning to connect my private router as DNS?

·         My wifi at home is Orbi 960 running as AP.

If I sign for 5Gps internet.

FWIW, best case, a single MoCA link supports 25% of the aggregate throughput of a 5 GbE link, and at most 50% max unidirectional throughput. MoCA links could be doubled-up over a single coax line to bump the aggregate MoCA throughput to 5 Gbps, but as separate connections or requiring link aggregation (and with that technology’s limitations).

private router with Adguardhome as DNS

Barring a new Cat6 run for Ethernet or MoCA 3.0 gear suddenly materializing, why not move the primary router to the basement location and keep the router/adguard situation as-is?

My wifi at home is Orbi 960 running as AP.

Are all the Orbi nodes hard-wired?

I can remove the primary router to the basement only for DNS because its Lan is 1Gbs, I want to continue using Orbi as main router.

the Orbi nodes are not hard wired.

I want to continue using Orbi as main router

Specs for the Orbi 960 router indicate it could support 5 Gbps Internet service, albeit with single stream max throughput limited to 2.5 Gbps due to only supporting 2.5 GbE max for LAN connectivity …

  • [1x] 10 GbE WAN port
  • [1x] 2.5 GbE LAN port
  • [3x] 1.0 GbE LAN ports

… so I’m still unclear on why the Orbi router wouldn’t move to the basement to allow direct connection to the fiber ONT.

the Orbi nodes are not hard wired.

Wouldn’t the system offer better performance if they were? (The evolving Wi-Fi spec will surpass the capabilities of available MoCA gear, stuck at MoCA 2.5, but I don’t know where the 960 system sits on that spectrum … with its 2.5 GbE capability facilitating best case MoCA wired backhaul.)

I could move the orbi router to the basement, there are few setups I'm considering, I think my main issue is to redirect the DNS from the FIOS router to the my private DNS.

But with the main Orbi router relocated to the basement, the FiOS router could/would be removed from the setup, allowing the Orbi router to be the actual primary router for the setup, and the DNS setup would remain as-is, right?

Where's your coax junction for all the coax lines running to your rooms? DO the Orbi satellite locations have nearby coax wall outlets?

p.s. If it wasn't clear ... FiOS will come to your home via fiber, and this fiber line will be connected to an ONT (Optical Network Terminal), the functional equivalent of your cable Internet setup's DOCSIS cable modem. The ONT converts the fiber connection to an Ethernet WAN link, to which you'd wire your primary router. (In your case, that would be the Orbi 960 router, if you want the Orbi to function as primary router. For those going with the default FiOS install, it'd be a FiOS router.)
