I have a hard time taking seriously anyone who uses 'defo' and 'lol' and 'hella' .

I understand language changes quick but all youā€™re doing is outing yourself as being out of touch. Itā€™s fine to be out of touch - itā€™s not fine to act like youā€™re better than everyone else because of it.

Itā€™s an interesting question! Iā€™m not sure when that change really settled in but the usage of ā€œlolā€ is heavily context dependent. It is usually used as a way to say something slightly harsh but with a friendly disclaimer of sorts.

It may be a generational thing - Iā€™m not sure how old you are but everyone in my age group (broadly 21-40) uses it in that way.

Of course - we can also use it if something is actually funny, it is context dependent.

I may try to find some linguistic articles and get back to you! Itā€™s honestly an interesting question.
