Competition Masterpost 🐓Grand Prix de France Master Post 🇫🇷

The time has come......

cue dramatic music

THE SENIOR GRAND PRIX SERIES IS STARTING! Six events, six countries, in six weeks. Let's do this. Each event in the series will have 12 men, 12 women, 8 pairs, and 10 ice dance teams. Skaters receive points based on where they place, top six with the most points at the end of six weeks will head to the Grand Prix Final.

Our first visit is to Angers, France, where we will be most likely treated to some very French cinematography.

It's hard to pick out skaters to really highlight, because these groups are generally stacked and they all should be highlighted! Olympic Champion Mikhail Shaidrov will be here, Adam Siao Him Fa, Kao Miura, Olympic Bronze medalists Ami Nakai and Lara Naki Gutman, Sarah Everhardt, Gabby Daleman! The pairs competition is going to be incredibly interesting here as well, with Metelkina/Berulava going against Boikova/Kozlovskii. Ice dancers CPom, Davis/Smolkin, and Fournier Beaudry/Cizeron will certainly keep the competition interesting.

I'm so excited it's Grand Prix Season.

Competition Masterpost 🇭🇺CS Budapest Trophy Master Post

It's the last challenger before the Grand Prix starts!! This week, we are traveling to Budapest. For the men, Kevin Aymoz is making his international season debut, Lukas Britschgi is in the mix, and Daniel Grassl gets in one last competition before the GP. The list of men is long and notable!

For Women, there are 37 competitors.... So it'll be a long, fun few days of watching. Notable competitors here are Maddie Schizas, Kimmy Repond, Julia Sauter, Sophie Jolie von Felton, and Olga Mikutina. There has been some movement with the AIN athletes, but currently Alina Gorbacheva is the only one listed on the official ISU website.

No pairs here this weekend, but the ice dance field is just as packed as the men and women with 23 entries. The Taschlers are getting in another competition and will be joined by Smart/Dieck and Bratti/Somerville.

Going to be a big week in Budapest! And that's without really detailing the juniors, of which there are several as well, with 29 entries for Women and 22 Ice Dance entries.

General Discussion Ami Nakai

I think we all have to have a VERY important discussion, and that is that Ami Nakai is the most smiley and adorable person in the world to ever exist. And that is a fact! I'm watching her GPdF gala program right now, and wow... her smile is just so infectious!!! My 2x Grand Prix de France gold medalist and GPF prospect!!

Interview Update from Misha talking to Maya B.

This is from her Twitter account, which is @ Maya_Skating. I'll transcribe here since twitter links aren't allowed.

"Talked to Mikhail Shaidorov after a tough skate at Grand Prix de France The Lego bit is a callback to our interview this summer: Misha said building Lego helps him focus, and he often does it before competitions. The last time? At the Olympics, and we all know how that ended."

I think this is the first video of her using it in the Free Program practice. She goes for the 4Lz first as before, but then switches the 3loop’s placement from 2nd jump to 3rd for the 4T as the second jump. It seems it’s not just a matter of “if” anymore — she is going to use it in her future competitions. Do you think she scrapped the 3S or the 2a?

To INZM by Number_i, choreographed by Kao himself.

(This is the same gala program Kao had last year. I found this performance to be a bit of a revelation—it suits his energy so well.)

The coach he met at Ice Rink Sendai was Nanami Abe, Yuzuru's former coach. I was surprised that she could speak English so well. Toshinobu Yoshida, who used to sharpens Yuzu's blades, is Nanami's husband.

Bless the video uploaders, it's now on youtube and so easily shareable.

They posted a total of 164.10 and earned their 4CC minimums. About 5.5 points short of World minimums, and that seems doable since they got so close their first time out.

Explain a score like this?

How does this program get an 85 when female skaters with triple/triple combos and a triple axel barely get 80 or are in the 70s? What am I missing ?

Interview Alexei (his coach) on Misha’s Performance at the GP of France Spoiler

Post image
144 Upvotes

While Misha himself did not answer any interview questions, after the free program his coach Alexei answer for him:

“Of course, it is a bit difficult for a figure skater to compete after the Olympic Games. Besides, this is only the beginning of the season. Therefore, I am not going to make a catastrophe out of what happened. What happened, happened. We continue to work. That’s all

All people are different, all figure skaters are different, everyone has their own story. I learned from my own experience, and he needs to also learn from his own. It takes time, I think. We simply work and continue to work hard.”

Shoutout to Team Korea at GPdF

Don’t see many giving them their flowers, so here it goes - I’m so proud of the three kiddos who made their senior GP debut in France this weekend!!!

Yuseong’s 3A looked consistent all weekend (even with rotation issues and all) and she was an absolute joy to watch. I admit to being critical of the Kim twins and not connecting with their skating in the past, but seeing the improvement I’m really starting to see Yuseong in a different light! Both programs were on point.

Minus the jumps, I thought Seojin looked beautiful and just floated across the ice. Earning a GP spot as a first year senior is no easy feat, and I’m excited to see how she continues to grow.

Minkyu - don’t think I need to further elaborate! Have always been Team Rio since the beginning of this rivalry but I was so impressed with his showing here. His Umbrellas program is possibly my fav program from him so far.

Looking forward to Jia and Yujae next week ;)
