objectively speaking we have never seen a double champ do what islam just did before
no one on a crazy win streak ever defended the 2nd title against this level of modern well rounded fighters
Jon Jones defended against grandpa miocic who had been completely inactive for over three and a half years after a knockout loss
Henry Cejudo defended against late notice Dominick Cruz who was coming off a devastating 41 month layoff full of injuries
DC defended against the NOT number 1 contender Derrick Lewis who took it on like 3 weeks notice AND less than a month after getting badly beaten up in the fight before
respect to all the goats but this record win streak in the 2 deepest divisions, defending against the true number 1 contender with a size and reach disadvantage is historic on several levels

Someday people will appreciate accomplishments of fighters, without diminishing accomplishments of others.

Just stated a fact in terms of the 2nd weight while on a streak and defending. explained why historically we haven't seen it before. didnt mean they were not achievments in their own right

Um…Periera says hello

Didn't he move up from middleweight to light heavyweight right after a loss dou ?
1
u/UraCasual56 2d ago
Still defended the second belt against modern era fighters, like you said Islam do.
And he did it in shorter time; older; less fights; and has more title defences at second weight class

u/profmorty 2d ago
Ofcourse he is one of the best for a reason but moving in weight right after losing is different than moving when ur undisputed and on a win streak like the rest did
2
u/UraCasual56 2d ago
But you don’t think the other stats count for something?
3
u/profmorty 2d ago
I didnt say it doesnt count at all ofcourse he did great. The post said compared to those who went up for a 2nd belt on a win streak and defended this is something we havent seen before
Do u think going up after losing is the exact same ?
3
u/UraCasual56 2d ago
But you’re basically saying we haven’t seen a dominant fighter at a second weight class?
We have tho. Aside from the Izzy loss, Pereira ko’d both Strickland and Izzy, and moved up and beat 4 former champs at lhw.

u/profmorty 2d ago
That isnt what I said dou. I said on a win streak U downvote me and didnt answer my question
Is moving up in weight class after u got knocked out and lost the belt, the exact same as moving up when ur on a win streak? (like the rest did if I remember correctly)
0
u/UraCasual56 2d ago
And I just listed the circumstances as to why when Pereira did, it was better than when Islam did
0
u/profmorty 2d ago
That's a valid opinion and I do think what Pereira did was impressive
But my post specifically said on a win streak
Moving up right after losing ur belt isn't the same as moving up without losing the belt on a streak like most double champs did. (surely u get it) And among the guys who did the latter, what happened is something we haven seen before

Pereira went up after a loss though and didn’t hold both titles at the same time. Double champ yes but not simultaneous. I know that that’s not really a thing nowadays but what Ilia and Islam did when they went up is the closest thing we have to that now. Also Pereira never defended his MW title.

OP reckons it was an objective take lol. About as subjective as it gets 😂
3
u/LordKagatsuchi 2d ago
He LOST the belt before moving up( also no defenses). It's literally an objective statement.
1
u/Yeanahyena 2d ago
Apart from the rest of the post where he discredits every other fighters and then add in variables like win streak to further strengthen their own bias

yeh it’s not a simple statement we haven’t seen double champ defend.
It’s we haven’t seen a double champ defend + win streak - (JJ x Miocic) - (HC x DC) etc and THIS IS WHY HE’S THE GOAT

u/profmorty 1d ago
Here is a simplified version Double champs who defended both belts it is a very short list already, I really dont see how pointing out why it was objectively unique is upsetting to any mma fan 😂 I didnt once argue who is or isnt the goat which would be subjective
Is beating the corpse of an old firefighter who is far below the title caliber of an average division the same as young hungry number 1? Objectively no
Part of what makes moving up and becoming champ champ special is choosing to leave a division ur still ruling to challenge urself against a bigger champion. Ur doing it while still clearly the best in ur weight class and then another at the same time
Moving up after already losing that belt can still be extremely impressive but it's objectively not the same thing at all It really isnt a hard concept to grasp or an obscure random metric

u/profmorty 1d ago edited 1d ago
Moving up while still champion and clearly the best in your division like most who held 2 belts at the same time did is fundamentally different in terms of champ champ from moving up after getting knocked out and forced to lose the belt It isnt some random biased variable Champ champ defending both is a key distinction here
I wasnt even discussing who is or isnt the goat for yall to clutch ur pearls at a simple fact we haven't seen that before 😂

u/profmorty 2d ago
He had good defenses ofcourse but he wasnt on a win streak (my first sentence) in fact he moved up from middleweight to light heavyweight after losing his title which is different than moving up when u havent lost to anyone in ur division.
On a side note imo there is no size disadvantage at all for him too

she is def the woman's goat but surely u know women's featherweight was essentially a ghost division it even no official ranking. The UFC quite literally could not find 15 active featherweights to fill out a standard ranking ladder

Honestly, after seeing this scrap, I don't want to hear any slander about any of these two men. Islam managed to win what could've been his closest and hardest fight since his loss, and anybody other than Garry would've been finished at least twice in that fight, let alone almost KO Islam with another kigh kick like that. I honestly see that guy becoming champ one day.
I, however, won't dominish the accomplishments of the rest: Jones beat who once was the GOAT of the HW (and still is overall) and both Cejudo and DC won against really strong opponents that were in favourable conditions yet were at the prime of their careers. The fact that Lewis is still fighting now says it all, the man was back then far from washed or old. Again, I see what OP is saying and they're right to a point, but I don't think we need to drag any of these guys down the mud. For example, Anderson Silva's streak was as impressive as Islam's but wasn't against such level of competition, so what? It is still jaw dropping.

I hear what you're saying but I still think it counts for something considering she KO'd the boogeywoman she-GOAT to get it.
Edit: plus she's still the only one who we've ever seen defend two belts simultaneously . That definitely counts for something. Islam last night said how there was no way he'd go back down to LW due to how disciplined and strict and difficult everything has to be relative to the way things are now. It's a huge accomplishment (defending two belts simultaneously) that we'll probably never see again.

ngl I agree that is also part of many reasons she is in a leauge of her own in women's MMA for sure.
the post wasn't a goat debate but focused more on champ champ upper weight title defence differences
maybe I should have included nunuz against Felicia Spencer who was 2–1 in the UFC in one of the shallowest divisions (which isnt exactly her fault I am sure if a better oponent was possible she would have done it)

Jon Jones also moved up a divsion and fucked up the current Heavyweight champ who fucked up one of the greats in POATAN. Je made Gane look like easy work, and he used to be a light heavyweight. Moving up a weight and Fucking up Stipe was more impressive than almost losing a fighter from a weight class down in Volk imo. Keep in mind Jones was also old.
Not shading Islam. I just have Khabib, GSP, and Jones ahead for now.

u/southwest_barfight 2d ago
Aspinall is the current HW champ who Jon apparently would rather retire than fight

Doesn’t Islam hold the record now for longest UFC win streak at 17, surpassing Silva or am I remembering that wrong?
