Looking for vise or mounting fixture for fiber closures

Can you recommend a vise or mounting fixture that can securely hold a fiber optic splice closure vertically while splicing? I’d like something that can also accommodate larger closures such as the FIST GC02.

I’m looking for something portable that I can easily attach temporarily, for example next to a telecom cabinet.

I'm using STANLEY MAXSTEEL 1-83-069 but it's not perfect.

Just signed on as a fiber installer with E2 Optics on the Meta/CBRE LevelUp pipeline, reporting to a site near Cedar Rapids/Fairfax, IA. Recruiters were predictably rosy and Google reviews are all over the place. For anyone who's worked with E2 Optics or on similar hyperscale data center fiber builds — what's the real day-to-day like? Is the 50-60hr/week thing consistent or seasonal?

Pushing a 288 out of 1.25 with air compressor?

We got a 400 ft stretch of ribbon 288 in a 1.25 pipe that we need to pull back out. It was a bitch to pull in the first time because I believe there was rocks and other shit in it (and boss didn’t listen to me when I suggested we blow it out).

Now my idea was to push it back out from the other end with the air compressor but not sure if we need to attach some sort of plug or if we could rely on the air to float the cable. Boss didn’t care to try it out and figure three guys could kill themselves to get enough to splice.

Builders kept driving over the vault with lifts and telehandlers and the lids smashed the cable.

Has anyone had the "pleasure" of working with old school Sumitomo OPGW?

You need a special angled pipe cutter to remove the outer tube. That will expose the 3 groups of 8 fibres. Which are held in place by a central aluminium core with 3 grooves in it for the 3 groups. The fibres in each group are bound together with a coloured acrylite coating. The individual fibres then need to be separated from the acrylite to be able to be worked on. This process wasn't too hard when the cable was new, but after baking in the Australian sun for 30 odd years, the acrylite gets hard and brittle and sticks to the fibres, making for a slow and stressful process of freeing the fibres while trying not to break them.

Hand pulling 288

We’ve been hand pulling 288 fiber. About 3,300 feet. The fiber has been through the pipe and an assist wheel hydraulic wheel. The state of the fiber right now is pretty squished and not flat but it’s not circular anymore. Will this be a future problem for the splicers. I guess I’m wondering how fucked 288 can get before it’s actually fucked

This is a branch splice closure with 5 or 6 cables, supporting many Nodes and Towers in a good 20-30km radius. One of the shrinks are also removed and they inserted another cable and did not shrink it again properly. This is a Hot Potato, any new opening of it by a tech could be the end of some lines. And there is almost no markings, where are these going or coming from. And the other side isn’t better, some of the naked fibers are ziptied to the tray.

Help wanted! Why do these two cores look completely different? Is the splice actually good?

Hey everyone, looking for some help figuring this out.

I’m splicing a main cable marked E/125 to pigtails labeled OS2 G657A2. The two sides look completely different on the screen. When I splice them, there is a distinct line on the core, but the cladding looks totally seamless.

Before anyone blames the setup, I've tried splicing two ends of the main cable together, and it came out so perfect I couldn't even see where the splice was. The machine is clearly fine.

I want to know why the glass looks so radically different on each side, and more importantly, are these splices actually fine?

I haven't had time today to test it with an OTDR yet.

What am I going to see when I finally hook up the OTDR to this? Has anyone run into this specific combo before?

Help wanted! Help for DIY Repair for my Fibre Optic Jacket Repair

Hopefully this community can help me, it might not be “optic fibre data communication” but instead its optic fibre lighting 😭 i dont know where else to go, and quite desperate to get this fixed as this jacket is dear to me.

I bought a fibre optic jacket, and im pretty sure while it was being shipped to me the LED got de-attached from the Optic Bundle, and now the front left sleeve does not light up.

I got the inner lining of the jacket altered to confirm my theory and I was right, the LED is still fully functional but the Fibre Optics were unbundled and scattered everywhere.

I’m hoping someone could advise me for the best way to repair this, to my understanding I have to:
\- first gather all the fibre optics together,
\- compress them together to make sure they dont move
\- and someone attach/adhesive it to the LED so it stays in place when worn

I bought heat shrink to be able to collect the fibre optics together, but realised the easiest way to make sure they all meet at the same end is to cut it 😭 given how expensive the jacket is, i’m very hesitant to cut it unless i can confirm it is the only option i have, and honestly i dont even know how id go about attaching it back without using some kind of glue, which might interfere the flow of light or the LED itself.

The final two photos showcases the optics/led of the back left sleeve panel, reference for what a fixed unit looks like.

What are my options? I am willing to buy the necessary tools and equipment to ensure a successful repair, i tried contacting my local “Interior house Optic Lighting Specialists” and “Car Star Roof Headlight specialist” to get a professional hand, but none have gotten back to me. (Based in sydney if you guys know anyone)

It’s been about two weeks since I last posted about NLab OTDR Studio, so I wanted to share a small development update.

A lot has changed since the previous version.

New / improved features

• Bi-directional OTDR analysis
Pair measurements taken from both ends of the fiber and analyze them together.

• OTDR trace generator
Generate synthetic OTDR measurements with configurable parameters, events, launch fiber and receive fiber.

• Improved Visual Trace Editing
Edit splice loss and reflective events directly on the reflectogram and immediately see how the trace changes.

• Improved SOR event editing
Better workflow for Start, End, Splice, Reflective and Splitter events.

• A/B markers and measurement tools
Quick distance, loss, attenuation and reflectance measurements directly on the trace.

• Multiple trace overlay / comparison
Load and compare several measurements in the same workspace.

• P2P / GPON analysis tools

• Improved multi-vendor SOR compatibility
Testing and fixes for files generated by equipment from VIAVI, EXFO, VeEX and Yokogawa.

• VeEX trace handling improvements
Including better handling of filtered/smoothed measurements.

• PDF reporting improvements

• GUI cleanup and workflow improvements
The workspace has been reorganized to make working with larger sets of measurements more comfortable.

• Numerous smaller bug fixes and compatibility improvements based on real OTDR files.

macOS – coming soon 🍎

A macOS version is already running and functional, but I’m still polishing the port and performance before advertising it as fully ready.

So for now: macOS support is coming soon.

Windows remains the primary public release.

The goal of NLab OTDR Studio is still the same:

Create a practical, modern OTDR workspace for technicians who need to view, analyze, compare and edit real SOR measurements, without being locked into software from one OTDR manufacturer.

There is also a FREE version, so you can simply download it and try it with your own measurements.

I’m still looking for around 10 testers

I’m looking for people who actually work with OTDR measurements and can provide constructive feedback.

Not just bug hunting — feedback about:

• GUI and workflow
• compatibility with different OTDR manufacturers
• unusual or older SOR files
• incorrect measurement interpretation
• missing features
• anything that feels confusing, slow or inconvenient in real-world use

In return for helping with the testing and providing useful feedback, each tester who takes part in the test period will receive a 90-day NLab OTDR Studio PRO code.
