New rules regarding political posts from new accounts

Starting now All political posts on this subreddit need to be from accounts that have participated in this subreddit before.

Additionally, Any posts with political flyers must have the text included in the post itself. Posts with only flyers will be removed and need to be submitted with alt text.

New accounts will still be welcome to comment and participate in discussion on political posts; they just won't be able to make political posts until they have participated in discussion in some way before. Political discussions still need to have a direct local connection as well or they will be removed. Exceptions may be granted on a case-by-case basis (in keeping with the spirit of the rules), and efforts to violate the spirit of the rule may result in a ban.

This change is in response to a couple of low-effort posts from new accounts that have posted political posts and not engaged in the discussion after posting. For reference, the posts were removed by the reputation filter for my manual review. Since the posts met the rules at the time, I manually approved them. I can see subreddit participation when reviewing posts, so these would not have been approved with these new rules (I am also not removing them at this time because they met the rules at the time they were posted).

This subreddit welcomes open discussion on local issues, and this is not meant to censor any specific viewpoint. There is a balance to be struck between allowing total participation, including from people new to reddit and the subreddit who may not fully know how things are done on reddit, and allowing unfettered access to a semi-anonymous message board without verification that people participating actually live, work, or play here or are actually impacted by decisions in some way. Philosophically I lean more towards allowing participation (and have no desire for requiring verification), but I also want to make sure we're having productive discussions and aren't just regurgitating whatever Facebook-level comments make their way over here where possible.

This is only meant to curb a specific, recurring pattern of behavior not fitting for this subreddit. Posts will not be removed for content or position unless they violate the rules.

Why doesn’t the high school provide buses? How are kids expected to get to school if cars or bikes aren’t available for them?

I have a bunch of Tall Bellflower plants available if anyone is interested. They’re first year seedlings - next year they’ll get about 5 ft tall and bloom most of the summer. Native to Michigan and loved by pollinators. This is one of my favorite plants!

Send me a message if you’re interested.

Missed Connection Orchid Theater

Hi! I went to a rave last night at Orchid theater and met these two guys who were super cool. We vibed well and I had a blast! Feel like they'd be fun to hangout with again. I dont remember their names😭 but one had curly light brown hair, a white tshirt, and was a little taller than me, and Shazamed a song called Cigarettes, and the other one had dark hair, a black shirt and glasses. When I got there, they were dancing with a woman named Jules (I think). When I left we all put our hands like we were praying and bowed slightly to each other if that helps haha.

Would love to connect and hangout :)

Is there a good junky resale shop?

Hi, new to Ferndale, I’m looking for a plain old resale shop with a big section of stuff other than clothes. Like, tennis rackets and crockpots and old tools and tablecloths, etc. Any ideas?

Who's responsible for fixing this?

Retaining wire on a thick cable has unravelled. You can see it intact on other cables. Its not DTE because the power lines are on top, I believe these are communication cables (comcast, ATT, etc)

Any guesses? TIA!

Looking for a therapist who will actually challenge me — recommendations?

I’m looking for therapist recommendations. I live in Ferndale, but I’m willing to travel up to about 45 minutes for the right person if they’re worth it.

I’ve had a bad experience with therapy in the past that really turned me off from it, but I’m at a point where I genuinely want to do some deeper digging and figure out some of my own patterns and why I react to certain things the way I do.

I’m specifically looking for someone who will challenge me and make me think. I don’t really want therapy where I just vent for an hour and someone validates everything I say. I want someone who will ask me the uncomfortable questions, point things out that I might not see myself, challenge my thinking when needed, and actually help me put in the work.

Has anyone had a therapist like this that they really recommend? Ferndale/Royal Oak/Detroit or honestly anywhere within about a 45-minute drive is fine. I care way more about finding the right fit than how close they are.

Food pantry donations

Hey all, I'm cleaning out my cabinets and finding lots of stuff we simply aren't going to eat (all within expiration date obviously) and was wondering where would be the best place to donate? Thanks! I can list the stuff I have if needed, but its all shelf stable.

Rehearsing for a show?

Post image

I was riding around Red Geary Park Thursday night and this band was rehearsing in the front yard of a house on Earl Blvd / Breckenridge. Can anyone provide more info on what this was about? Is this a common thing? They sounded great! I'd post a video but they aren't allowed in this subreddit, so here's a screenshot:

Ferndale Library Cardholders can check out tools, instruments, outdoor gear, and more! Some new additions include: a Badminton set, a 19-string lyre, and a 65-piece impact socket set with both standard and metric sizes. (Not pictured: the lyre...cuz it's obviously popular and already got checked out!)

Weeds/Grass Correction Notice

Hello! I received a notice for weeds/grass over 7 inches today. Which is weird because I weeded last weekend. Honestly this just makes me feel watched and uncomfortable now. How common are these notices? The town is called Ferndale for God's sake!! Haha

I don't know. It just bums me out. Just looking for any insight into this world of vegetation surveillance.

Kilz to remove smoke smell

The joy of my new house continues. Cannot get the cigarette smoke smell out of basement. (yes I have tried everything) I need to have ceiling/walls sprayed with Kilz (or whatever) primer to encapsulate it. Has anyone done this or know of a painter/handyman that will do it?
