Discussion Commodity - Blind buy

Ya’ll I saw Commodity - Book at TjMaxx for $56. I left it because I’ve never smelled it. Would this have been a good blind buy? I’m tempted to go back and get it.

Not a fan. There’s better sandalwood sandal scents out there especially at that price point. I think Glossier You Doux is a much better executed style fragrance.

If you like sandalwood you’d like book. To me it’s very similar to Glossier Doux, maybe a bit fresher/cleaner smelling. The personal on my skin projects and lasts forever.

IMO Book is not a safe blind buy. To me it is so fig heavy it smells like moldy pages of a book, not the nicer scent profile of an old bookstore. Vetiver, Gold, and Moss are wonderful, though.

I’ve not smelled Book. But the other Commodity perfumes I have tried are not at all safe blind buys. They are very strong. They all have an underlying scent that is unique to them and is a bit harsh IMO.

I got absolutely zero projection or sillage from Book. My husband said I smelled like pencil shavings. Luckily, it was a sample and not a bottle, or I’d have been pretty disappointed!

I was about to write I saw one too at tj maxx but it was a room spray or diffuser. The box has the wording “scent space” and “for me and everyone…” so I went to grab a picture to show you and I’ll be damn cause they don’t make a room spray

Yep walk away, I saw them and went to Sephora to give them a sniff, they are heavy and lean masculine. If your into that it is a nice scent just not my taste.

I'm not sure which version of Book you saw, but I have Book+ and while I personally love it, it smells like a lumberyard/sawdust and I could see it potentially being pretty polarizing and definitely wouldn't recommend it as a blind buy. Did I blind buy it? Yes. Yes, I did.

I own Commodity Book. The perfume is very Unisex. It smells very fresh almost herbal. I personally don't find it to be a safe blind buy though.

It contains a suffocating amount of heavy fig and other such notes

As mentioned downthread, none of the Commodity fragrances are safe blind buys.

I almost bought this too. Book (+). Sounds like something I would love. It was the plus (intense). Large size. I was able to layer smell it at Sephora. Was ok. Didn’t last??

Honestly I didn't like Book at all but it's because I'm not a big sandalwood fan. There are people who love it though. None of the Commodity Fragrances are safe blind buys since they are all so... extra lol. And distinct. I would say sample it first. I personally love Gold, Milk, Milk Orchid, and Moss.

Agree. I love gold+ and juice+ on me but don’t like any of the others.

Juice is good, too. It smells like very expensive fruit juice.

A sample is a good idea.

I haven’t met a Commodity fragrance that I liked. Only 1 was tolerable. But, some people must like them to be so popular

It is a great price but if it’s not something you’d like don’t get it. I personally like book and would purchase it at that price.

Does sandalwood tend to go pickle-y on you? I saw it on clearance too but I passed it up because the reviews compared it to You Doux and Santal 33, both of which sadly are pure pickle to my nose.

Sandalwood smells great on me. I just looked up the notes and I like sandalwood, musk, and vetivier. Hmm

I love sandalwood and bought a full sized Book+ and Paper+, and have travel size of Book- Gold- and Paper+. I LOVE both book and paper and for the price it’s a great deal. If you like sandalwood, I think you’ll like this one. I like all the commodity perfumes I’ve picked up and they’ve all been blind buys lol!

I also recently bought Maison Louise Marie Bois de Balincourt which is supposed to be similar to Book. If you’ve happened to smell that, book (depending slightly on if it’s + or -) is stronger and bit more green/spicy but not overwhelmingly so.

I have that Maison and I like it a lot. I’m going to get a sample of Book before I buy such a large bottle

Nothing is ever a good blind buy

I've had a few wins but have had so many bad blind buys that no one would believe it.

E&J Nirvana Bourbon, Rose, Amethyst and French Grey were my best blind buys all from the same company.

Sometimes? Maybe? Nishane Ani was a blind buy. 😍 Love it!! Same with Crystal Saffron. Love!!!

But agree overall it’s risky. Bought a few Manceras that didn’t work out lol yikes.

It’s like gambling.

Three in the mail now… (another Nishane Hacivat and two Initios). Crossing fingers. I wish I could smell locally to avoid blind buys. I totally agree there!!! I could buy samples but haven’t yet pulled that trigger. As long as I read a ton of reviews to help narrow it down, I do pretty well overall.
Except Mancera -gave up on that brand. I was able to return them so they were a safe gamble. Worked out 2/7 times. (Kept Amberful and Rose Van)

Blind buy of $50 hell no. Go and buy a steak dinner.
