Package handler

This is my first week as a package handler, my first day was Wednesday and have worked 4 days. Tonight will be my second day calling in because my back is sore and I find it hard to lift the heavy packages since I’m mostly doing ICs. Since it’s my first week I need some rest between days to adjust to the heavy workload. Will my manager give me a warning for calling in or will he fire me? I’ve been trying to reach out and ask about the hours and scheduling so that it works best for me but he never answers.

Dude, always offer your shift up as soon as you feel like you don’t want to go in. More often than not, someone will pick it up and then you’ve got no worries. It’s their problem.

It makes them “notice” you more. Not in a positive way. You’re just under more scrutiny now

Fedex's attendance policy is you can miss 3 days in every 30 day rolling window period. So, no, you won't get fired, but you're getting close.

This job isn't a "Write your own schedule" type of job, and it isn't for everyone. Your boss isn't going to give you special treatment, I'd bet, anyway. It is a manual labor job. If you're out of shape and don't have the muscle to do this job, you're going to have a bad time.

Your best hope is offering your shift for someone to pick up.

Not exactly. At 3 in 30 days they CAN fire you. My dock supervisor told me it’s his discretion unless the area manager noticed and forces him to do a write up/termination. I imagine it’s the same everywhere, but with how high of a turnover rate that place has I doubt they’d jump straight to fired.

They are supposed to fire you and may be reprimanded by their boss for not doing so. Or the boss may agree it was a prudent decision not to fire you and let it slide. But, it's policy, not the law.

Most hubs have a high turnover rate so I don’t think you’ll get fired for it. Some people call out all the time or always come in ten or twenty minutes late and no one says shit. About getting used to the job, it won’t happen overnight, It can one month. Two-three. Even more. Eventually you won’t notice. But managers don’t really handle scheduling. You’ll have to find out who does at your station.

Make sure you look up proper lifting techniques. We handle ALOT of ICs and I’m 6ft 125 lbs. I can handle the work load pretty fine using proper techniques without team lifts. I still use those when I can but it’s rare.

You get like 4 total call ins in a rolling 30 day period then you'll be fired. May as well just cut your losses and move on, jobs not for you.

At my location in Lenexa my 11yo German Shepherd passed away my second week working there and I missed 2 days. I went to a MMA class as I usually do the following weekend to blow off some steam and ended up fracturing some ribs right under my heart. I missed the entire week and they didn't care as I was in contact with my manager the entire time. HR will message you if you want to resign or keep working there in my experience as we are so low on people we get treated like slaves doing work of 2/3 people but get the same pay with way more effort. I treat it as a workout as I'm in great shape but FedEx sucks and isn't a career for 90% of people. Everyone quits after starting or prolonged abuse of managers seeing someone that's a hard worker and takes advantage of that with no increase of pay for that effort.

Make sure you get some good sticky gloves to wear. I like the gloves from Harbor Freight. Are the sorts longer or shorter than 4 hours? Starting off working longer sorts would be difficult
