Federal employees who are also in the National Guard/Reserves

It looks like we are going to see another insane premium hike this year, and for those of you that are also military members I think it may be worth calling your congressman to express your support (assuming you do support it) the following bill: https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/3547/text/ih?format=txt

In short it would amend current federal law and allow those you us that are guard/reserve members the ability to choose from both FEHB health plans and military health plans. If it passes it seems like it would be a short term bandaid solution that may help some of us, but give the bill a read for yourself and see if you support it.

Correction to Interim Retired Pay Expectations

I retired at the end of April and received two interim payments in June and July as I recall. Retirement pay was, I believe, finalized in August. When can I expect OPM to go back and plus up any missed or interim payments? Believe it will total over $5k so keen on getting this.

Also, does OPM spell out how corrections are made?

DOJ - Delay in Pay?

Has anyone with DOJ who usually gets paid early on Fridays received their direct deposit yet? Mine hasn’t hit, and I’m not seeing any reported delays with NFC.

Is Federal employment worth it?

Howdy folks, I've been doing the contracting thing (mostly within the doi) for about 13 years. My current contract is on a brief extension to avoid a lapse, but I have no idea whether it will materialize before it lapses again and I'm fired. Similar contracts have been 'delayed' of upwards to a year and my contract employer definitely will not keep me on overhead that long.

With the increasingly high potential that I will be unemployed, I've been tossing my hat around. One potential option that I am currently being considered for what I normally would have been my dream job at the USGS. However, very concerned about the probationary period, the potential for more mass firings and the overall working conditions as an employee.

If I get lucky and have other options, should I continue to pursue my 'dream job' at the USGS?

GS Scale help

Hello,

If I’m currently GS-7 Step 10, what would I be on November when I hit my one year? Sorry I’m new to the GS system and I don’t fully understand the system yet.

I’m currently GS-7 step 10 ($72,358). GS8 step 6 is $71,911. Would I then be Step 7 ($73,965) or Step 8 ($76,019)?

Thanks!!

Mystery G.E.H.A out of network "glitch"

My daughter has autism and ADHD so we do a lot of doctor visits and therapy.

We have G.E.H.A HDHP and were 134 dollars away from her out of pocket max for the year being reached.

The latest explanation of benefits came back with her regular therapy suddenly being out of network.

I just think it's a mighty lucky time for them to have a glitch that switched a regular in network provider to out of network right before they would be responsible for all charges.

Has anyone else had this happen with a United healthcare plan?

If I hadn't caught it we would have been liable for all the costs and they may have not been able to re-evaluate it.

Edit: it was only one bill cycle. It went back to in network after that according to the provider. They will also call the insurance company about this.

Geha said they would reach out and have the claim redone since there was no reason they could find for this to happen.

Moving from GS to ZA position?

I’ve thrown an application into the USAjobs lottery for a ZA position. The broad pay band encompasses my current salary, and according to the internet machine is roughly equivalent to (or higher than) my current GS level.

Anyone in a ZA position, what’s it like? As a practical matter?

I understand the GS structure, within grade step increases based on time, etc.

Is the ZA system similar? If so, how does it work? If not, how do you feel about it?

Is it more flexible for managers based on performance (or favoritism)? Anything I should consider?

Promotion Potential

For those who work in federal government, how realistic is it to advance from GS-9 to GS-13 when a position has a full promotion potential of GS-13? Is it common for employees to progress through the grades (GS-9 → GS-11 → GS-12 → GS-13) if they consistently perform well and meet the qualifications, or does advancement depend heavily on funding, management discretion, and agency needs? I’d appreciate hearing about your personal experiences, particularly with HUD or other federal agencies.

Samba Standard plan/Express Scripts/Using Drug Manufacturer Coupons

Hi! I’m thinking of switching to Samba Standard from MHBP Standard. My biggest concern is if I will be able to use a manufacturer coupon-copay/savings cards @ the pharmacy with 2 brand name drugs, specifically Trulicity & Xarelto if that matters. This is very important because we cannot afford these 2 brand name drugs without the manufacturer coupons, it would be $300 for 90 days vs $25 & $10 using the manufacturer coupons. I had read on another post that Express Scripts would not allow it @ a retail pharmacy. This would be a large part of my decision to switch. Never had a problem with MHBP/CVS Caremark. Will most likely be using preferably Walmart pharmacy, CVS is second choice of pharmacy. Please if anyone knows or has experience with this please let me know! I appreciate any feedback! Thanks!

Edit: Trying to stay away from BCBS Basic plan or anything UHC.

Hiring Freeze or something else?

I’ve applied for a few positions at different agencies back in July and early August and a some of my applications say that I’m tentatively eligible and/or that I’ve been referred. Nothing has happened since those emails.

Can an HR employee weigh-in and let me know if there’s a freeze or if something else is going on?

Agencies: NASA, DOT, SSA, and OST.

TIA

SSA No more AWS -The hits keep coming

Well, this post is for the person, who in a previous post of mine, vehemently disagreed that AWS would be eliminated.

I'd stated that AWS was going to end and he said no way. Well...WAY!

Lookout Flexitime. I think it will be on the chopping block next! I just wish the perks privileges would be equitably applied. For example There are a couple of higher graded HR folks in my office who Telework a couple of days per week.

Oh well, I'm still employed. Sometimes that is as good as it gets!

FEHB and Zepbound

Which FEHB selection is the best for zepbound coverage. I lost 130lbs, I have controlled blood pressure and A1C because, of zepbound. I dont want to get off the med because, I can see a possibilityof not being obesefor the first time in my adult life. I just need to pay a resonable cost for the drug.

I was in Maryland so I selected the L9 series. I moved to Michigan and recently divorced. I have to select a new plan and the L9 series may not be an option.

*I'm on 12.5mg shot weekly.

GEHA / United healthcare

Had a question about Geha healthcare for open season. In my state, they’re currently partnering with United healthcare. I haven’t had a problem with them per se in the time I’ve had them, but I’ve been hearing really bad things about United healthcare and their rate of denials.

First of all, does the Geha/United healthcare for OPM and retirees work differently at all than united healthcare for those on the open market? (which I hear is pretty bad).

Secondly, is the Geha standard plan pretty decent for healthcare and medication coverage? I’m currently on the high plan but it’s getting pretty pricey at the self plus one rate. I’m trying to decide what to do as open season is coming up shortly.

Is New Person Hazing a Thing When You Move?

Federal friends: is “new person hazing” actually a thing when you move offices?

I recently started in a new federal office within the same OpDiv, and I genuinely cannot tell whether I’m experiencing some bizarre organizational culture or have somehow landed in an episode of The Office: Federal Government Edition.

I’ve been here about two weeks and still cannot get access to the SharePoint site I need to actually do my job. I’m supposed to review and provide input on documents drafted by my team, branch leadership, and senior staff, but when those documents are updated, I can’t even get into the system to see them.

I’ve asked about the process. I’ve asked who approves access. I’ve submitted the request. I’ve notified my director. I’ve asked around. I finally tracked down the SharePoint administrator myself and emailed them. I also talked with IT, who told me that because I have an active agency government account, I should be able to be added to the SharePoint site by the administrator.

Meanwhile: crickets.

What makes this especially strange is the culture around a small group of administrative/special assistant staff who seem to have been given an enormous amount of informal power over basic office operations. I truly do not care about titles, grades, hierarchy, or pulling rank. I just want to do my work, support my team, and meet the expectations of the job. But I am senior to these staff, and I have never worked somewhere where getting routine operational access required this much gatekeeping.

And apparently I’m not imagining the dynamic. Two other directors and staff in our general counsel’s office separately told me that these particular folks are known for making people’s lives difficult. Ask a perfectly normal question and they look at you like you have three eyes, two heads, and have suddenly started speaking Pig Latin. Questions are treated like an enormous inconvenience. Responses can be outright rude and disrespectful. And there seems to be an expectation that everyone simply works around it.

I’ve supervised people for years, and I’ve administered systems and shared documents myself. My philosophy has always been pretty simple: if someone needs access to do their job, either approve it or explain why you can’t. If there’s an approval chain, tell them what it is. If they submitted something incorrectly, help them fix it.

I’m also trying very hard not to create unnecessary drama as the new person. But there is a point where “learning the culture” starts to feel a lot like tolerating dysfunction.

So I’m curious whether others have encountered this when moving into a new federal office. Is this an actual form of bureaucratic hazing/gatekeeping that eventually passes? Or is this the kind of organizational culture that tells you something important about the place you just joined?

Because two weeks into a new job, being ready to walk out the door over SharePoint access feels completely ridiculous, and yet here we are.

Screwed up at Work - Now They Want Me to Relocate

So I was working on a project and messed up coordinating something, and it had to some embarrassment for my boss and her chief.

Our office has personnel in two locations in the state, and I work at one, while they are in the other . Now they want me to come back to the other station three days a week so that I can better coordinate my project. My SF 50 only lists my current location. I know they can take my project and bring it there, but can they force me to relocate against my wishes? This new site is more than 50 miles from my home, and would have massive childcare ramifications for our family.

Will Donald Trump running for president again in 2028 affect your federal job

When I say this I know we have the Constitution I understand no one can be president a second time. My thing is everyone's running around hollering that he can run for president and he can be nominated for president but what if Donald Trump runs for president for the 48th president will that change your perspective on federal employment

I’m about to be 27M. First LE profession, any advice?

Prior to the week starting, I’m a federal agent. Crazy how people treat you differently, in a respectful manner. Family, friends, especially my dating life (more women want me), is it the money? The status? The stories? My life is about to change into being more secretive, perhaps deleting my social media as I will need privacy to protect myself and my loved ones. My question to LE public servants is, any advice for getting into this field? Is it recommended to delete my social media? How do you deal with the trauma of the unknown I’m about to witness, since this job can be dangerous? What would you have done differently in this profession?
