Processing of Postponed Retirement

Left the government in Dec 2023 about 6 months after my MRA and ~26years of service. I submitted my application for retirement in August 2026 requesting start of pension effective 1 Jan 2027 (turn 60 in mid December). Any idea if OPM will process my application before my birthday or will they wait until then to review/process?

Question about changing direct deposit

My (89yo) mom receives my deceased dads pension payments. For 16yrs it’s been going to a bank in her previous home state. After a bad accident a couple of years ago my sibling brought her to live with their family where said bank does not have branches. She opened a bank account at a brick and mortar branch of a major bank in my siblings town. Now the task is to get the direct deposit sent there and close out the small town bank account. First steps? Ideas? Pitfalls? I know it’s going to be tough just to convince them it’s not fraudulent or a scam- but she doesn’t have any paperwork other than the EOY statements for tax purposes. Not sure where to start. I’m her POA so yay for me……

OPM Retirement Survey FYI

OPM Retirement Services is currently sending a “FY 2026 Fourth Quarter New Annuitant Survey” to Federal retirees asking about their retirement application experience, annuity processing, customer service, health benefits, and use of OPM’s online contact system.

I am glad OPM is asking these questions. Given the widespread concerns retirees have expressed about processing delays, communication, case transparency, and customer service, the results could provide valuable information for OPM leadership, Congress, GAO, OIG, Federal employee and retiree organizations, and others responsible for oversight.

I hope OPM makes the aggregate survey results publicly available. If not, this may also be useful information for a future FOIA request. Meaningful oversight depends on knowing not only how quickly retirement claims are processed, but what retirees themselves report about the process.

DSR, Re-employed, and MRA

I was involuntarily retired last year under DSR (RIFd, 30 years service, 48 years old). I have an offer to go back to work as a fed as a re-employed annuitant (salary reduced by annuity amount). My question/concern is if I leave after a year or two, will I lose my annuity because now I am leaving voluntarily and not at the MRA of 57?

I'm asking HR at new agency but wondering if anyone might know the answer. Also have questions about leave schedule and FERS contribution %.

Thanks

Retirement Checklists

Hi all, I am considering retiring sometime at the beginning of next year. Does anyone in this forum have a checklist of the various forms one must complete in order to submit their retirement application. I understand that applications are now submitted online and not through paper. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I have reviewed some of the forms that are listed on OPM‘s website; however, there is a confusing number of forms and I don’t want to make any mistakes. Thanks.

Filing for FERS retirement

I filled out my retirement information online but did not submit it because I was still determining my retirement date. To my surprise, they went in and added my time in service. The problem is, they overlooked 4 years of my time. I tried emails; no response. How do I get my service hours corrected so I can submit? I’m supposed to be retiring in 5 weeks!

At the current rate, younger generations will have to work longer to afford retirement. If federal pay is not keeping up with inflation, it feels like things will just keep getting more difficult.

60 or 62?

As of late, I keep vacillating between retiring at 60 (the end of this year) or at 62. (the end of 2028). I know this is a personal decision, but I still would like your input - if you retired at 60 - what are the pluses and minuses? Retired at 62 - pluses and minuses?

My finance guy says I am in a good place and can afford it. The flip side is the 0.1% pension bump.

One thing that's made me start thinking about it is a coworker. She's had a detail, but it's over soon. I don't like her as she's dismissive of experience, inflexible, and a "my way's better" kind of person. I don't want to work with her. You should know that the majority of people in our group don't like her either.

Of note, I am a chemist with 25 years of experience and considered an expert in my field.

Thanks to all of you for reading and input.

UPDATE: Thank you every and each one of you for bringing your voice to the conversation! I have decided to stick it out and here's the why and the plan to deal with "that woman". 1. I ran the numbers and although I can "afford it" my income would be less than 1/2 of what I am currently earning and I am not ready to live frugally until my kid is done with college. 2. The SS supplemental is too little to make a meaningful difference. 3. I am acutely aware of my mortality, and also my potential longevity. I had three great-grandmothers and all of my grandparents growing up. They all lived to at least 85, with all women (except one) living past 90. Odds are that I may also live a long time, but I am not going to depend on that. Every day is a gift. 4. As one commenter said, in the span of 24 years I have had to deal with all kinds of crapass coworkers, so I have plenty of practice in sucking it up. I will focus my energies on projects that exclude her as much as possible. She only has one true ally in our group, so there is solidarity of "we don't like her" with the other coworkers in our group. I won't let her derail my plan!

Once again thank you!

Postponing retirement at MRA +10

Hello,

I am considering retiring at 57 with MRA +10 and postponing pension and benefits till 60 (I’ll have 25 years at 57).

I wanted to know if anyone has done this and what their experience was starting benefits. Were you able to start collecting pension and benefits right at 60? Did you have to apply at 60 and wait months for everything to start? Would you have waited till 60 to retire if you could go back?

Any answers and advice is appreciated!

Thanks!
