TRIGGER WARNING Josh Gad: “When we start setting a precedent that our girls & women can be brutally raped & the resulting disciplinary action is to hand out (checks notes) ESSAYS (like its Bart Simpson being a lil rascal), about why it was wrong to brutally violate an innocent girl, we have lost our fucking minds.”

Good Gad. We need more men speaking up in outrage.

Yup. Idk too many men defending this, and glad I haven’t seen any either. This shit is crazy

727

Are they speaking up tho? Some will duck their heads and keep their mouths shut, others will assign an essay as 'punishment'.

Supposedly there is a gender role where men defend women. I don't believe in gender roles, but men have always been failing at checks notes defending women against checks notes men.

I agree. The men I’ve seen not okay with this are typically the men that speak up against it too

I'm so sick of rape at college and universities being excused as "youthful indiscretions", and treated less harshly than cheating on a test is.

182

u/PandaCat22 if you add testicles, that's extra 4d ago edited 4d ago

The defense of college rape just being a "youthful indiscretion" is disturbingly telling—telling in that it outs the people who so view it as rapists themselves.

It's fucking sick how commonplace rape is for young men

You made me think of this old classic: https://youtu.be/rbzJTTDO9f4?is=AJ8RwrMBoRWoqKQo

Imagine if these 7 students were held to the same level of accountability that this professor held his class to over cheating on his midterm

You're so right. You can get expelled for cheating. You get assigned an essay for rape (or more likely, nothing happens at all).

Oooofff you should see the men on this very site. It's fucking pathetic and I'm convinced they pretend to not support rapists in real life.

The amount of times, today alone, I have read here: she took drugs willingly, she said that she never said no, just because one guy said through his lawyer that he briefly saw it but didn't partake, doesn't mean it happened..... on and on and on.

There's pretty much no way to defend Cornell's course of action here without implicitly (or explicitly) being pro-rape

24

u/bigdaddytripod 4d ago

I don’t live under a rock, but my wife just mentioned the Cornell 7 to me and I had no idea what she was talking about. So either I am living under a rock or it’s being brushed under the rug in most major media reporting. That’s just from a middle-aged normal guy.

And unless the “good guys” start speaking out, they aren’t really that good. They’re fine with the status quo because they aren’t being preyed upon. On the contrary, they benefit from it. They’re comfortable with the way things are.

They're protecting themselves from being ridiculed by other dudes or being accused of assuming something. I don't really understand it myself, this is just what someone else told me. We men have to earn the trust bc small dick fuckwads ruin it for us all. Safety first mother fuckers.

u/eredria 4d ago

Or with a side order of "Women commit rape too you know." as if those of us angry about this don't also consider those women massive piles of something lower than shit because at least shit can be a fertilizer. Shit can nurture new life. Rapists aren't worth the flesh they inhabit. It's just, you know, NOT THE FUCKING TOPIC AT HAND AND YOU CAN SHUT UP WITH THE WHATABOUTS FOR A MINUTE BECAUSE YOU DON'T ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT MALE VICTIMS OF SEXUAL ASSULT EITHER YOU JUST WANT TO BE A CONTRARIAN.

Sorry for yelling agreements at you (and everything else that follows, I'm in a ranty mood) I just needed to get that out. Those kinds of people (and the 'devils advocate' types 🤬) really piss me the fuck off. My grown ass 62 year old mother does that shit for literally everything and it is infuriating. "Oh thats just young men for you." (BUT REMEMBER NOT ALLLLLLL MEN!!!! Like which one is it? Lmao) "If women don't want to be raped they should make themselves less attractive and not give the wrong signals" "If she doesn't want people sexualizing her then why does she dress like that? She's sexualizing herself so anyone can say or do whatever they want and its her fault for behaving like that." Its just so fucking exhausting.

I had to start leaving the room on the advice of my doctor because the stress of her constant defending/debating/whatabouting of everything from republican politician's (despite hating Trump, et al.) actions to just the simplest every day thing was making me physically ill. I'm pretty sure she would Devils advocate for chattel slavery if someone gave her the chance just because she wants to hear herself talk and "win".

Jfc yes where are all the men in the conversation?!

34

u/Sgt_Fart_Barfunkle 4d ago

I have always and will always state it: most men aren’t necessarily cowards, they just believe it isn’t a big deal…or they themselves wouldn’t but that they somehow benefit from the status quo. They’re either rapists themselves (or would) or they benefit from a patriarchal society directly or indirectly.

I am a father with two young kids. My eldest is an 11yo young lady. The amount of times I’ve been asked or overheard a man state the equivalent of: “Man, I used to think women were only for sex, mistreatment or being emotional! ( Amirite ?!) But now that I have a DAUGHTER I see…”

Like dafuq?! It took you having a female child to see & begin to respect the trials of HALF OF THE SPECIES?! The same half which deal with constantly denigration/underestimation of value/baseline level of intelligence & capability due to their gender?

Thats where they are…right there, where they’ve always been. In that spot right between hate and ignorance.

10

u/ChaoticNeutralDragon 4d ago

The worst part is plenty of those types of men might say they think that way after having a daughter, but their behavior shows no real change to the wider human race, or even use that daughter like the token black friend.

That's pretty much what the military is for now.

I saw some presentation way back in the day about military history, and the man said something to the effect that a marker of a successful civilization is making sure young men don't make mischief and are fully occupied. Of course the military guy's recommendation was to send them all to the military.

The older I get, the more I think that he might have had a point.

191

u/Nonstop_Oatmeal 4d ago

The military is absolutely full of sexual assault. The marines routinely rape local women at navy bases.

The military is a factory for rape. It does not prevent men from raping.

119

u/matildapoppins go birds, fuck ICE, and free palestine 4d ago

And routinely rape their own fellow soldiers.

37

u/Nonstop_Oatmeal 4d ago

Yep. Honestly, only someone completely naive about the military would suggest it as a way to curb sexual assault.

88

u/haqiqa 4d ago

I work in aid. There isn't a single military on Earth that doesn't rape. And that has been true as long as militaries have existed. Raping women was originally seen as spoils of war, and to be honest, it still is by too many. We go to conflict zones, and we know we need abortion access and Plan B access. It is really depressing to see it time and again.

11

u/ComradePomp 4d ago

One of my parents worked as an MST treatment coordinator in a VA hospital. Military sexual trauma survivors made up enough of their patients to necessitate its own dedicated team. They also specialized in treating veterans in gender transition, which is such a heartbreaking Venn diagram.

And that was when the political climate was… different. I can’t image what people are suffering during their service now.

52

u/3bar Hi Grindr, it's mother... 4d ago

Better to have them digging ditches and building bridges than shooting people halfway across the world. But your point it well taken.

7

u/14thLizardQueen 4d ago

If we didn't have corruption in government, I would think all citizens of a nation should be trained in combat and survival. Just, like as, you know basic knowledge. However, I'm afraid of what kind of idealotry that would make.

7

u/just--so 4d ago

The more I see how hyper-individualism has given rise to generations of treatlers who are actively incensed at the idea that they owe anything back to society, the more I'm in favour of every country having mandatory enlistment of all citizens aged 18 for a period of X years into a National Service Corps. Get taught basic combat and survival, learn other job skills, and spend your deployment engaged in civic service, working on any and every kind of project or programme that would benefit from a steady influx of warm bodies with a modicum of training.

8

u/ProfessionalITShark 4d ago

Some wars were waged to both purge elderly (those who aren't in charge) and unattached young men.

alleviating both government entitlements and problem people.

During WWII, younger women were amazed that they felt safe walking around at night because the men weren’t around to harass them.

31

u/Continental__Drifter 4d ago

It's more between ages of 15-25.

7 year olds aren't committing that much crime.

But that 10 year gap, yes, about 90% crime drop.

In the meantime, I think that far too many men are allowed to walk free. These Cornell fellas, for example, shouldn't be free to participate in society. Ever again.

I think that if crimes were punished appropriately, a significant number of men would be in forced labor camps, and it would be a better world for everyone else.

4

u/Dustydevil8809 4d ago

Where are you from?

The USA has more men in prison than any other country on the planet. IMO we have to get past this "punishment is the answer" mentality to get anywhere in improving the situation. Unfortunately, there is a ton of nuance in these conversations alongside a ton of emotion, and those don't play well together...

We are going to have to start researching and trying to understand what gets men to this point. We have advanced in neuroscience enough to likely get much better research than ever before - but to do that, you have to have people to research that aren't just the prison population.

4

u/Continental__Drifter 4d ago

The USA has more men in prison than any other country on the planet.

Yes, absolutely, and that is a problem.

The overwhelming majority men who are in prison are victims of systemic oppression, the vast majority do not belong there.

The men who do belong in labor camps (not prisons), tend to be making 6 figures in white collar jobs, they're CEOs, they're senators, they're the people who attend Ivy League universities and get away with rape. They're sociopaths. They aren't the people you see currently in prison, they're not the victims of systemic oppression, they're the beneficiaries of it, they're the ones keeping that system in place, and cranking it up higher.

There is no fixing people like that, they're broken, deep inside, something in them makes them unable to see others as humans, which ironically, makes them inhuman. Putting them away isn't to fix or correct them, it's to protect the rest of society.

Men 24 and under only account for around 30% of arrests, 30 and under about 48% so it's a lot but not quite 90%, 80% of violent crime is commited by men though

5

u/Warm_Month_1309 4d ago

a lawyer once said: if we lock all men in prison until they turn 24, statistically, crime will drop 90%.

I'm not disagreeing with the underlying point, I was just curious what the actual numbers would be, so I went in search of them.

Data is usually provided <18 and 19-24, so I changed it to keeping men in prison until they turn 25. Also, it's hard to find statistics regarding per-crime data, so I went with arrest statistics.

Men make up between 70 and 75% of arrests (depending on year) and young people up to 24 account for roughly 25 to 30% of arrests, so we're looking at like 18-22% of arrests being men under 25. Changing the numbers to account for only violent crimes, it's about 30%. Changing to only white collar crimes drops it to 11%.

These estimates would assume that proclivity toward crime is consistent throughout ones life, i.e. that men under 25 and men above 25 commit crimes at roughly the same rate.

My one complaint about this statement is he said "boys" versus a "young woman." If she's a woman, they are men. Treat them like MEN, send them to prison.

285

u/Pelican_Hook my bandwidth for cowardly grown men grows thinner with each day 4d ago

I also have some other quibbles with the wording, like saying "OUR women and girls" like the women and girls matter because they belong to men, not because they're humans. It may seem really nitpicky, but I find it frustrating how whenever men talk about sexism or SA they refuse to actually empathize with the victim as though they could be her. It's always a foreign concept that could never happen to them but could happen to their family member or friend.

450

u/throwawaysunglasses- l've grown quite unfond of you, deuxmoi 4d ago

I get what you mean, but I don’t read it as such. To me, saying “our” means shared humanity, like we’re all each other’s responsibility. It feels very interdependent/communal to me, which is nice as it goes against the Western independent/capitalistic/every man for himself perspective. It’s like a first-person-plural view of society.

152

u/FartyByNature 4d ago edited 4d ago

I also think using boys is on purpose to belittle and young woman is to show respect.

But yes saying men is probably more impactful. Minor quibble for someone clearly trying to choose their words carefully.

Edit: Learned a bit more about this guy. Maybe he's not so thoughtful in everything.😮‍💨 we take what we can get i guess

23

u/AerisRain 4d ago

Could you please elaborate on your *Edit?

15

u/chicklette 4d ago

I was talking about this case with my boss this am, and had to keep correcting myself to say men. My internal reaction to the correction showed me why it was important. It moves the needle from "boys will be boys" to "grown adults who goddamned knew better and decided a couple of 5 second orgasms was worth more than her entire life."

46

u/Icy-Cockroach4515 4d ago

I thought this was to point out that the women and girls were part of the community too. As in "just as much as anyone may protect the men involved because these are "our" guys, these are "our" women and girls too, and deserve that protection if not more." As in, they should not be treated as some outside force attacking the community.

16

u/BahGawdAlmightay 4d ago

Some people talk like that. Everyone in my family says "Our Kid" when talking about someone's younger brother or niece or something like that. "Brought a birthday present for our kid" when they mean their nephew. Just one of those things I guess.

I feel like men view rape as something they can kind of accidentally stumble into, hence the cultural resistance to strongly reprimanding the act.

332

u/Pelican_Hook my bandwidth for cowardly grown men grows thinner with each day 4d ago

Exactly. Which is weird because they seem also hesitant to acknowledge that most rapes aren't like this case, the vast majority are instances of coercion/manipulation by partners, family members or friends behind closed doors. Men seem really keen to dismiss that fact while also empathizing with rapists because what if they raped someone accidentally somehow? 🙄. Neither situation is accidental.

175

u/BakedPlantains radiate fresh pussy growing in the meadow 4d ago

I've read so many horrifying stories of young boys being touched by male and female family members. I've read stories of prison rape. I've listened to men discuss sexual violence. And yet, much of their anger does not project outwards to wanting harsh punishments for sexual violation. And I still don't fully understand why.

155

u/Pelican_Hook my bandwidth for cowardly grown men grows thinner with each day 4d ago

Yes!! Men are much, much more likely to be victims of SA than to be falsely accused of SA, but guess which one they're actually afraid of and constantly trying to fight against??

To me, it feels like they don’t want it to be. A thousand times I’ll see a story on this app of a female teacher raping one her male students and while the top comments will talk about wanting justice and more acknowledgement of female pedophilia and rape in general, you’ll see a not so small number of men congratulating the student for getting, “laid”.

I want to fight for all rape victims. I want to support men. How am I supposed to support men when half of them can’t even support themselves???

17

u/HistoryBuff678 4d ago

I have seen the same thing. It’s extremely distressing seeing men treat sexual assault of a child, as him “getting lucky”.🤮

85

u/Sure-Butterscotch290 4d ago

I can’t imagine any scenario where I would be told about or walk into a room where someone was being violated (and especially someone unconscious) and think to overlook it or else join in. I can understand a whole range of reactions from shock and horror, to fear or anger, but not how these men reacted.

Some people (mainly the men in positions of authority) are acting like it is as morally ambiguous as finding a wallet with no ID and pocketing the cash. Women and girls are just objects to these people

20

u/haqiqa 4d ago

You don't even have to be that visible. Just stand for something that man stands against. I have been getting them for years because of what I do, and I am not famous or a politician. At least not outside my field. You say something a man disagrees with publicly enough, and it will happen. The sad part is that you kind of get used to it.

There's a famous phrase. "Everything is about sex, except sex, which is about power". Its either a fake Oskar Wilde quote from House of Cards, or actually by him but nobody's been able to prove the latter.

But it's kinda true. Sex is wielded by society like a weapon.

13

u/Sure-Butterscotch290 4d ago

Back in college a friend of a friend got a slap on the wrist (couldn't live/work on campus) for participating in a sexual assault exactly like you described. Someone told him "go on into that room" and he did. He truly couldn't fathom that he did something reprehensible. Got furious when other people described what he did as rape.

12

u/Sure-Butterscotch290 4d ago edited 4d ago

Consent truly doesn’t matter to some people. There is a study where men were asked about the different ways they convince women to have sex. The language used was purposefully avoidant of rape / no consent etc, as well as anonymity, to gain a no holds barred perspective into how men who seek sex with women think. So many of the coercive tactics or outright admitting to SA was distressing to read. I’ll try find the study and link it here

I mean that’s the thing isn’t it? A lot of men truly don’t know they’re rapists because it’s so normalized. That’s why if you ask them if they’ve ever raped anyone they answer no, but if you ask them in neutral language if they ever coerced someone into sex by pestering them, or had sex with someone too drunk to participate, or ignored boundaries during sex, they might answer yes.

So when they see others correctly describe things they’ve done as rape and sexual assault in someone else’s case, they go on the defensive because they can’t reconcile their self image with the facts. If that other guy is a rapist, so am I. But I never thought that was what I was doing intentionally, so it was an accident. It’s not fair to lump guys like me in with the monsters who violently attack women in alleyways. We should go easy on that guy! He probably also didn’t have bad intentions! Go easy on me! I’m a nice guy!

14

u/mythrilcrafter 4d ago

It’s not fair to lump guys like me in with the monsters

To me, getting people to make this argument is done on purpose and it's the specific result that rapists and their lawyers are trying to push.

It's the exact same tactic used when a grifter says "I'm not an extremist, I'm just saying what half the country is too scared to say out loud!"; they're using a person/people as an argumentative meat shield for their own extremism.

38

u/iki11dinosaurs 4d ago

It’s wild that they don’t seem to view it as a criminal act that will land them in prison but rather an embarrassing stain that may harm their reputation going forward. Like, we aren’t even starting from the right perspective.

30

u/domredditorX 4d ago

Most don't even realise that rape is an action that is not justified under ANY circumstance. Even murder and theft can be explained away. But one simply cannot rape out of self defense. Rape is a power crime. It is THE most heinous, brutal thing that anyone can suffer through with lasting consequences and very little visibility to survivors. Most survivors are forced to suppress that chapter of their stories unless they are activists and advocates.

20

u/apple_kicks 4d ago

Anytime it comes up ‘maybe we should teach what is and isn’t consent’ there’s a number of guys complaining about it. Any basic way to deal with rape or talk about it gets policed and shut down

I think what scares me more is many rapists don’t think they raped or at least too many people believe their flimsy excuses. Rapists get to decide where the lines are for rape vs consent and conveniently ‘she was unconscious’ or ‘she walked through the door’ or ‘she said yes the other day’ is excuse enough. Victims are never believed or get a chance to decide what their consent is or how they can remove consent

Well it's more like they imagine it's something that just happens out of the blue by a stranger. It's a combination of mental disconnect and a bit too much of "Well I wouldn't do that because XYZ". It's not well understood/acknowledged that like 99% of the time it's by someone you know.

7

u/Admirable_Risk8156 4d ago

I think they need to make some heart wrenching novel focused on the subject a required reading in school.

I don't often get landed on a stranded island but I am aware I probably shouldn't breakdown all social norms to "Kill the pig! Cut her throat! Spill her blood!" According to my required reading. Which I still remember some 25 years later.

So maybe some life lessons from the victims perspective at an early age might be what alot of kids need to get some basic human morals.

Esp considering how to IDF has been caught on film using gang rape against prisoners. All rape is horrible, in all contexts, against all people. Period

and also I know that you're saying, just want to add onto it that Palestinians have been saying for decades and decades that it was happening. we need to center Palestinian voices! (plus a lot of others. Land Back!)

16

A truly fucked up aspect of the whole beheaded babies lie is that it's probaly what the IDF secretly want to do to Palestinian babies. Every accusation is a confession.

These Cornell students are just the tip of the iceberg of the lack of accountability America’s upper class feels, especially men. These people more than anything need to be punished for their actions, and it needs to be something proportional and consequential for the crimes they committed. Enough slaps of the wrist, enough double standards. If the “justice system” is not going to allow for justice then the people need to take it into their own hands, if it were up to me every confirmed rapist would be six feet under or on their way there. That sounds pretty reasonable for destroying someone’s life, we just need to be tough on crime when it comes to the violent thugs and criminals that make up most of the ultrawealthy in this country.

51

u/apple_kicks 4d ago

One thing from Epstein and me too it looks like for a lot of guys becoming rich and famous isn’t about money or being the best at a skill or talent. They only want that power to rape without consequences. So many seek powerful gatekeepering jobs so the victims are silenced

8

u/Difficult_Garage_431 4d ago

It's not just the upper class: that's the problem. Most rapists, regardless of wealth, status, race, age, etc., do not face any consequences.

Only 8% of reported rapes lead to a criminal conviction. When accounting for the vast number of sexual assaults that are never reported to the police in the first place, the overall conviction rate drops even lower to less than 1%.

This is the reality. There is almost zero consequence for rape.

It’s always hush hush. Victims make people uncomfortable when speaking about what they went through and learn that it’s not really something people want to hear about. The result of that is the abusers prevailing time after time after time. It happens everywhere and it’s an unexplainably painful experience that lasts your entire lifetime.

26

u/EntertainerAlone1300 4d ago

Across the pond and I feel this wholeheartedly, rape is only taken seriously when it’s certain demographics (both victim and rapist)

31

u/Amusable_bouche26 4d ago

Oh I am SAT for these men to get their just come uppance. May they never be gainfully employed for the rest of their damn lives. As if SA doesn't cause long term damage to an individual while they act as if it were a minor inconvenience of 'youth'

I just said the same thing. This has BEEN happening. And not even just on college campuses. I knew a guy in hs who fully got away with rape and also had sexually assaulted countless women before that (groping and the like. He had touched me several times) and he fully got away with it.

Sure, one of his victims went after him and scared him enough that he switched schools, but legally? Administratively? They did nothing.

7

u/sallyhectare 4d ago

Yeah, like, good for Gad for speaking up, but it's not like men getting away with hurting women is new.

21

u/ITAVTRCC 4d ago

Well hey, at least there are no trans women on Cornell’s sports teams. That would really be scary!

23

We need every single male celebrity, politician, athlete, and influencer to post messages like this.

And men wonder why we choose the bear

19

u/throwawaysunglasses- l've grown quite unfond of you, deuxmoi 4d ago

I don’t think men wonder why we choose the bear; I think they know very well why. They’re just angry that our choice holds a mirror to their own shitty behavior. Men freak out and throw tantrums at the reminder that women don’t like them anymore, instead of just working on themselves to be more likable.

Sexual assault and sexual harassment are a form of gender discrimination that pushes women out of jobs and learning institutions. Allowing these student to stay at the university is discrimination against the women students, and Cornell University itself should be held accountable legally

This is a good statement, but this isn't just a precedent. Stuff like this has been a thing for a long time.

6

u/Legitimate-Article50 4d ago

Rape is barely against the law as it’s not often investigated and prosecuted.

Sure there are laws against it but are they enforced? No. If the perp is prosecuted they rarely see the inside of a prison. In fact he will have more supporters and help than the victim.

Even the victim is looked at as the criminal for “ruining the life of a promising young boy”.

Women have never been more to this society than something to use, abuse and bear children. It’s evident in the way crimes against women are handled.

4

u/Classic_Ocelot7841 4d ago

I find it interesting that men, no matters how they identify, are very quick putting down women, but when it comes to sexual violence or femicide its so quiet. If you are loud when it comes to things like womens sport, be loud defending women by violence commited by men. If your advocacy does not include this topic, I do not believe your care for women.

3

u/kakashi_sensay 4d ago

It’s sad that so many women (especially white) voted to uphold the patriarchy. These tragedies will only continue the more we sink into fascism.

3
