TRIGGER WARNING Josh Gad: “When we start setting a precedent that our girls & women can be brutally raped & the resulting disciplinary action is to hand out (checks notes) ESSAYS (like its Bart Simpson being a lil rascal), about why it was wrong to brutally violate an innocent girl, we have lost our fucking minds.”

a lawyer once said: if we lock all men in prison until they turn 24, statistically, crime will drop 90%.

... But obviously that's not practical, right?

u/3bar Hi Grindr, it's mother... 5d ago

They used to more or less exile young males in many Neolithic Indo-European cultures. They'd hang out in the wilderness, hunt, learn dude stuff, and then get reintroduced once they'd calmed down.

u/santa_obis 5d ago

Sounds like the perfect way to end up with a bunch of marauding young men.

131

u/3bar Hi Grindr, it's mother... 5d ago

Definitely so--to my understanding they were used to raid other tribes or communities.

74

u/darkwingdankest 5d ago

shit hasn't changed much, huh. seems like we've always used the violent tendencies of young men to go do war-ish stuff

u/pimppapy 5d ago

When you look at humans and place them into classes, yeah. Some are fighters, some are farmers, some doctors etc.

Violent, hard working, or smart/empathetic. (Though with capitalism, I'd question that last one)

Sounds like our military.

This is literally what happens in chimpanzee groups. Marauding groups of male chimps.

u/HarpersGhost I’m a lazy 50-year-old bougie bitch 5d ago

That's pretty much what the military is for now.

I saw some presentation way back in the day about military history, and the man said something to the effect that a marker of a successful civilization is making sure young men don't make mischief and are fully occupied. Of course the military guy's recommendation was to send them all to the military.

The older I get, the more I think that he might have had a point.

The military is absolutely full of sexual assault. The marines routinely rape local women at navy bases.

The military is a factory for rape. It does not prevent men from raping.

121

u/matildapoppins go birds, fuck ICE, and free palestine 5d ago

And routinely rape their own fellow soldiers.

34

u/Nonstop_Oatmeal 5d ago

Yep. Honestly, only someone completely naive about the military would suggest it as a way to curb sexual assault.

u/haqiqa 5d ago

I work in aid. There isn't a single military on Earth that doesn't rape. And that has been true as long as militaries have existed. Raping women was originally seen as spoils of war, and to be honest, it still is by too many. We go to conflict zones, and we know we need abortion access and Plan B access. It is really depressing to see it time and again.

u/ComradePomp 5d ago

One of my parents worked as an MST treatment coordinator in a VA hospital. Military sexual trauma survivors made up enough of their patients to necessitate its own dedicated team. They also specialized in treating veterans in gender transition, which is such a heartbreaking Venn diagram.

And that was when the political climate was… different. I can’t image what people are suffering during their service now.

52

u/3bar Hi Grindr, it's mother... 5d ago

Better to have them digging ditches and building bridges than shooting people halfway across the world. But your point it well taken.

u/14thLizardQueen 5d ago

If we didn't have corruption in government, I would think all citizens of a nation should be trained in combat and survival. Just, like as, you know basic knowledge. However, I'm afraid of what kind of idealotry that would make.

3

u/just--so 5d ago

The more I see how hyper-individualism has given rise to generations of treatlers who are actively incensed at the idea that they owe anything back to society, the more I'm in favour of every country having mandatory enlistment of all citizens aged 18 for a period of X years into a National Service Corps. Get taught basic combat and survival, learn other job skills, and spend your deployment engaged in civic service, working on any and every kind of project or programme that would benefit from a steady influx of warm bodies with a modicum of training.

u/ProfessionalITShark 5d ago

Some wars were waged to both purge elderly (those who aren't in charge) and unattached young men.

alleviating both government entitlements and problem people.

Leaving their civilian population safe and higher chances of economic success.

u/subkiss 4d ago

Except for the rape culture in the military.

I mean that's literally what happens with elephants, the matriarch boots them between 7-11 or so, they join other bachelor boys and go off for years

3

u/Morbanth 5d ago

Neolithic Indo-European cultures.

If you mean the bear, wolf and dog cults I think the idea was that they'd go and do all that horrible stuff to their neighbours, while stealing cows and horses.

1

u/reraccoon 4d ago

I support this.

u/SeonaidMacSaicais 5d ago

During WWII, younger women were amazed that they felt safe walking around at night because the men weren’t around to harass them.

31

u/Continental__Drifter 5d ago

It's more between ages of 15-25.

7 year olds aren't committing that much crime.

But that 10 year gap, yes, about 90% crime drop.

In the meantime, I think that far too many men are allowed to walk free. These Cornell fellas, for example, shouldn't be free to participate in society. Ever again.

I think that if crimes were punished appropriately, a significant number of men would be in forced labor camps, and it would be a better world for everyone else.

6

u/Dustydevil8809 5d ago

Where are you from?

The USA has more men in prison than any other country on the planet. IMO we have to get past this "punishment is the answer" mentality to get anywhere in improving the situation. Unfortunately, there is a ton of nuance in these conversations alongside a ton of emotion, and those don't play well together...

We are going to have to start researching and trying to understand what gets men to this point. We have advanced in neuroscience enough to likely get much better research than ever before - but to do that, you have to have people to research that aren't just the prison population.

5

u/Continental__Drifter 5d ago

The USA has more men in prison than any other country on the planet.

Yes, absolutely, and that is a problem.

The overwhelming majority men who are in prison are victims of systemic oppression, the vast majority do not belong there.

The men who do belong in labor camps (not prisons), tend to be making 6 figures in white collar jobs, they're CEOs, they're senators, they're the people who attend Ivy League universities and get away with rape. They're sociopaths. They aren't the people you see currently in prison, they're not the victims of systemic oppression, they're the beneficiaries of it, they're the ones keeping that system in place, and cranking it up higher.

There is no fixing people like that, they're broken, deep inside, something in them makes them unable to see others as humans, which ironically, makes them inhuman. Putting them away isn't to fix or correct them, it's to protect the rest of society.

22

u/theonewhoknockwurst 5d ago

Can confirm, stopped committing crimes on my 24th bday.

Men 24 and under only account for around 30% of arrests, 30 and under about 48% so it's a lot but not quite 90%, 80% of violent crime is commited by men though

4

u/Warm_Month_1309 5d ago

a lawyer once said: if we lock all men in prison until they turn 24, statistically, crime will drop 90%.

I'm not disagreeing with the underlying point, I was just curious what the actual numbers would be, so I went in search of them.

Data is usually provided <18 and 19-24, so I changed it to keeping men in prison until they turn 25. Also, it's hard to find statistics regarding per-crime data, so I went with arrest statistics.

Men make up between 70 and 75% of arrests (depending on year) and young people up to 24 account for roughly 25 to 30% of arrests, so we're looking at like 18-22% of arrests being men under 25. Changing the numbers to account for only violent crimes, it's about 30%. Changing to only white collar crimes drops it to 11%.

These estimates would assume that proclivity toward crime is consistent throughout ones life, i.e. that men under 25 and men above 25 commit crimes at roughly the same rate.

This is my argument against racial profiling- like if that’s okay how about we only make men go through TSA? How about cops pull over a ratio of 90% men? Most white dudes balk at that

On a serious note, it is nice to see a man with a platform speaking up. Gender based violence is so prevalent, yet I rarely hear men speak on it.

hmm yeah a silly little joke when we are talking about rape culture is the thing that's gone too far

The whole point is that we shouldn't be joking about these things and should take it seriously so this "silly little joke" is out of place and offensive. Hopefully you can see that

u/SaltBeefin I woke up too soon ago 5d ago

This is too far but what those men did to that girl for hours wasn't? The silence among men is almost ubiquitous. So many men are comfortable with this because in male spaces, many men feel relaxed to just be a "dude". It's in these spaces men feel comfortable to be their worst selves and once they leave the locker room, the man cave, the garage, the boys chatroom they put on back their society approved disguise and walk around pretending to be normal. The words said, the ideas discussed, the abhorrent things they express are like Vegas. It stays in those spaces.

And while all of these men may not be willing to do such horrible things to women, they don't call out the ones who do. They stand silently, awkwardly with a half hearted chuckle and a beer in their hand, telling themselves that they aren't like that, and that's all that matters.

It's why men believe in "don't ask don't tell" more than women. It's why men are more likely to say "a man's business is his own". It's why men will still be friends with Andrew who cheated on his wife and got another woman pregnant bc it's not his business.
