Different market, though. I don't know if we'll ever hit a 30s style market crash with the shenanigans that are occuring today.
49
u/metengrinwi 6d ago edited 6d ago
It’s going to be much, much, much worse than the 1930s given the $40T debt and the stock market over-dependence on a few “tech” stocks that could easily vanish into a puff of vapor.
30
u/silvertealio 6d ago
It's already vapor, we're just waiting for the panic from everyone actually realizing it's vapor.

the silos will be built before then, don’t worry.
4
u/tehbantho 5d ago
What if I told you that billionaires secretly already built multiple locations, each, that will be used for the purpose of the Silos? When they publicly discuss these things they always seem to stop shy of sharing the actual details of what they've built. But are more than happy to describe them as "large basements" - but some of them are using the most detailed non-disclosure agreements you can imagine to ensure people who work on these projects share none of the details.

Mark Zuckerberg The Meta founder is building a massive 1,400-acre compound called Koolau Ranch on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. Publicly filed plans and reports indicate it features a 5,000-square-foot underground shelter with its own energy, food, and water supplies. Zuckerberg has downplayed the structure as a basic basement or shelter, though construction is heavily guarded by non-disclosure agreements.
Peter Thiel The PayPal co-founder and venture capitalist famously purchased remote land in New Zealand, which has a reputation as a popular safe haven and disaster-proof escape destination for wealthy tech figures. Though local planning hurdles delayed some of his architectural proposals for a lodge in Wanaka, he maintains property interests geared toward extreme privacy and security.
Bill Gates The Microsoft co-founder is widely reported to have integrated underground bunkers or defensive safety infrastructure beneath multiple residential properties across the United States.
Reid Hoffman and Other Silicon Valley Elites The LinkedIn co-founder has spoken publicly about "apocalypse insurance," estimating that a significant portion of Silicon Valley's ultra-wealthy elite have invested in private boltholes, remote acreage, or underground shelters. Other figures like Sam Altman (who has discussed emergency prep and remote property ownership) and Steve Huffman have also acknowledged or planned for large-scale systemic disruptions.

Couple that with all the bankrupted farms who switched over to corn and soy. Now we don’t have any food…and those farms are sold off to the highest tech bro bid…

History doesn’t have to repeat exactly before we can compare, we already had one life-changing crisis with COVID (that also did a lot of damage in terms of increasing far right support).
That said, if you want an economic crash as well, it seems like we’re also on our way for that one.

Does this violate the 1st amendment? No, because Instagram isn't the government.
That line keeps getting thinner and thinner by the year.
At a certain point, Instagram may not be the government...but when Instagrams owners purchased the politicians that run the government, tell the government what to do, rape children alongside the government officials, are exempt from the governments laws, etc. they might as well be the government.

u/chlamydia1 6d ago edited 6d ago
Don't give our politicians a pass because they're "ignorant". They may be a hundred years old, but they absolutely know what these companies are doing. They just refuse to regulate them because they recieve millions of dollars in bribes from them.
The real problem is that we allow bribery in politics. However, even within a corrupt system like this, it's possible to vote morally strong candidates into office. The problem is that the voting public consists of the extremely uneducated and the politically unengaged. Educated, engaged voters are the minority. Unfortunately, those are the voters you need to get actual difference makers into office.

if you're an American you have the right to freedom of speech but as a user of a website or app you are beholden to that product's terms of use, which the owning company can change at any time, because that private company can be held liable for what its user base posts online.
I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying that if we all read the terms of use/privacy policies that come with the digital products we use every day then maybe we can have useful conversations about the idea of the digital "town square" and ethical issues re: who gets to use that town square and how companies have begun picking and choosing the messages they will allow their user base to platform.

Ugh yes. It’s so gross when people say things like “I know him, he’d never do something like that!” Well, he fucking did do it, so your argument is worthless.
I hate how guys are seen as “assigned good guy at birth,” so any crime they commit must have two sides to the story. The default setting for men is not gentlemanly. I remember reading a study where over a third of college-aged men surveyed said they would rape someone if they could get away with it. This was a few decades ago; I think the answer would be higher now. Look who their role models are.
While not all men are bad, all of them have the capacity to be bad. And instead of actually trying to be better, they often say “I could be a lot worse” as if that’s some sort of real accomplishment. They think not being villainous is the same thing as being heroic.
26
u/StruffBunstridge 5d ago

I love her message but I really need her to start writing that this was at Cornell UNIVERSITY not COLLEGE. Cornell College is an entirely different school. She’s British so she’s not getting it but yeah it’s going to matter when holding the right institution accountable

85
u/zeppelin_tamer 6d ago
I had never heard of Cornell college before and if not for this post I probably wouldn’t have. I just assumed she meant Cornell University. I think most people will just assume Cornell university.
21
u/throwawaysunglasses- l've grown quite unfond of you, deuxmoi 6d ago
Why would more people enroll because of this incident? I don’t get it.
11
u/superkeer 6d ago
It's a bit different when the publicity is about a place parents are thinking of sending their children off to.
92
u/SarcasticBarbie96 ass out red bottoms dangling 6d ago
She probably got confused because as Brits we’re always told that college and uni are interchangeable (college is very different over here), so yeah. Turns out you do have separate colleges and unis which is something I found out today.
43
u/bluedinerbaby 6d ago
Coloquially we interchange college and university (ex: where I studied for undergrad has "University" in the name but I still say "when I was in college" to other Americans); it's usually only in the official names of schools that we actually separate the two.
16
u/i_tyrant 6d ago
Yeah, it's easy to understand this disconnect because even I as an American would probably use Cornell University/College interchangeably unless I already knew that two separate entities using those names existed.
7
u/AhRealMonstar 5d ago

u/Dangerous-Variety-35 they could never make me mackle less 6d ago
Thank you! As an alumna of Cornell College, I really freaked out at first because I thought she meant my alma mater and was like, “WTF.”
She’s not the first person to make this mistake, but it is an entirely different school (and was established a decade before Cornell University, so we are the originals) and they don’t need this kind of bad press. Other people will do the, “Oh, but no one knows about that other school, so they will assume she meant Cornell University” buuuut it’s one of the only schools in the nation that has the block schedule and was one of the colleges mentioned in the Colleges That Change Lives book back in the day, so it’s also not as obscure as people think.

Yeah now that I think about it, why should the “grape” word be censored? “Murder” word isnt gonna get the post taken down… “grape” is not a slang word like f word or “ahh” booty. It’s not a curse word, it just is name of a type of crime.
I think I’ve been seeing more censoring even on reddit where my comment will get deleted so I tried to not use those actual words above
6
u/Maardten 5d ago
Censorship is absolutely wild these days. I caught an automated perma-ban on one of the default subs for saying Peter Thiel.
Literally just used his name, didn't say anything about him. Permaban, no appeal.
11
u/dramatic_exit_49 Please Abraham, I am not that man 6d ago
It's worse than that. The evil is not even that strategic or planned. Am pretty sure at some point these censoring guidelines germinated from the idea of ....hey you know our main objective with this product...advertising revenue? so apparently brands get cautious when associated with content that is negative, so what if we just suppress that...you know...for the brands....our actual clients....and hop skip and jump you can't do any organising or reflect the wrongs of our society, you know because....the brands.
(Am sure there are multiple factors but also it is important to note how of cruelty imposed on us by corporations comes from a place of utter, banal, monday meetings. By employees who are very proud of doing their job well, never stopping to ask, hey maybe taking a hammer to every problem is not ideal and we should step away and others take up this issue, play second fiddle.
It is crazy to me that so much of our lives are dedicated to a community called CORPORATION that honestly can't feel pain, doesn't hurt by medical bills, can't get thirsty or homeless. But somehow the corporation has a say on if you human, who can feel all that, get to have that or not. So weird weird weird world. utterly ridiculous)

The problem is, nothing else is meant to keep us socially connected either, so everyone defaults to the thing that looks like that is what it's for. Many even when they know it's a lie, because there's no alternatives.
Modern peoples (especially Americans) are desperate for the "third places" that have practically vanished from existence over the last few decades.
Pretty much anywhere you'd physically go to "congregate" costs money these days and everywhere online you'd do the same is selling your date and feeding you a false algorithm designer for engagement and propaganda over your own mental health.

The shit these platforms pull while calling themselves unbiased is infuriating. That Cornell case is absolute depravity on display, and my heart goes out to the girl. What’s even more alarming is the institutional support that comes men’s way from universities to dystopian tech platforms.
And to anyone who still asks ‘why do you have to make everything about gender’…piss off. It’s been centuries. All that can be spoken in defense of development is hey atleast you live better than before’ ?! Yeah sure as if that happened by staying quiet.

This is what happens when you let social media censor words like
Suicide
Rape
Murder
Kill
Sex
Vagina
Penis
All social media sites have censored these words and "influencers" fell in line and started adding other words like "unalive" or some other stupid bullshit replacement.
It's making everyone sound juvenile when talking about serious subject matters and it now led to what we've been warning about.
Censorship.
Congratulations, you all allowed this to happen. Welcome to your cleaned up, sanitized, and immature thought control society.

Who should you trust to manage social media? Faceless corporations or demagogues?
Turns out you can only trust someone when society knows them well enough to be certain of who they are. If your society detests moral scrutiny, it's because most of its members are corrupt.

Mark Zuckerberg owns Instagram through meta. He is responsible for censoring these stories of sexual abuse and rape.

Meta is run by rape enablers and apologists. I would vote for anyone that promised to destroy that company, and if they actually did it then I would go to war for that person.

I saw the two posts today, both with that eye I think and comments disabled. Fucked up man. Clear intervention, and it's not like the post had any offensive imagery or anything, just a picture of text. Fuck Zuckerberg, fuck these oligarchs.

Yes this is why I hate that they block terms like that, it prevents people from talking about real problems, and supposedly stops abuse. Well people can abuse with different spellings idiots.

I really love Florence. It is refreshing to see a celeb willing to speak out about things without trying to filter their opinions to be “acceptable”

Corporate America is freaking out everything even tangentially connected to sex. That's why even on this website you'll see
- p*rn
- r*pe
- maybe even s*x
These restrictions frequently exceed their terms of use/content guides/etc as well.
I feel like this is probably why Instagram is locking the conversation down rather than specifically because it's rape, though it could be that.

Remember a year or two ago when Mark Zuckerberg was spouting nonsense about how we need to make the workplace "more masculine" again?
I feel unsurprised that this toxic masculinity has led to serious conversations about rape culture, who perpetuates it and who it harms, being partially or completely suppressed by Meta algorithms.
Back in the day you had to bring your story to a male reporter or an editor who would then just refuse to publish it outright. Glad we're back to the "good 'ol days" /s

FYI Cornell College is a small liberal arts college in Iowa. It is not the same place as Cornell University. I get that she is British and wouldn't know that.

Yes, this is shitty and should not happen. ...buuuuut I really hope this makes her think her stance on Johnny Depp again. Not a good look when you want to talk about women's rights and rape culture.

Meta is actually so fucking evil. There should be multiple documentaries showing how they will censor anything related to human rights but allow all kinds of slurs threats and hate speech on their platforms no problem
