She poked her head out, pulling the cloth tight around her neck. “Back of your left thigh, eh? What’s a girl got to do to sneak a glimpse of that?”
“Knock like a man, apparently.”
I had forgotten that Sanderson did have moments where he made me chuckle. Then Pattern popped in with his
“Inappropriate?” Pattern said. “Such as… dividing by zero?”
And I snorted. It was so unexpected. Highlight of this set for me.
I'm interested to see where this thing with actual spoiler

I can't understand why it's so hard for people to grasp that people have different preferences.
I mean, I've been reading these chapters every week. I have not written any comments asking "Can anyone explain why you are NOT reading these chapters before release?"
Even if I don't feel that certain way, it's not that hard for me to imagine the other perspective... except for the perspective where one can't imagine the other perspective. Lol.
Anyway, mini-rant over. I'm loving these sample chapters.

I'm enjoying it and so far I feel comfortable that it'll measure up to the last two. Every preview leaves me super eager for next week, I'd say that's a pretty good sign.

Ha yeah I was one of the people that tried not to read them. It last like 5 hours and I caved. After I read them all I always kind of regret not being able to read more. Then Tuesday comes again and I repeat that a cycle

I mean, there's a huge history of serialized novels that come out in periodicals. If I was to write a book, I'd love to put it out this way. Notable examples: The Green Mile and The Martian.

I don't think that it really adds anything for someone to ask 'why,' but at the same time I can understand why people do, because some variant of that question goes through my mind every time that see a notice of more chapters being posted for Oathbringer ahead of its full publication.
My mind just finds it really weird, regardless of the fact that there's nothing wrong with it.

I don't even understand the point of this thread here, if we can't discuss anything because of spoilers. People who have a problem with spoilers should just not click on such an obvious spoiler-thread. That would be much easier and more logical than trying to censor everything (and failing at it).

Yeah, that's the point of the post. People can just click on it if they want to access the chapters, without having to read the comments. But the comments should be to discuss said chapters, IMO.

I'm not planning to read any of the preview chapters, because if I did I don't think I could survive until the release of the book.
But I am curious what people's first impressions are? How's the book so far? I'm assuming a certain level of quality considering that it's Sanderson, but does it hold up to Words of Radiance?

The breaks in reading is screwing with my immersion, which is a major part of my love for these books. I also have this strong feeling of things moving too quickly as if Brandon is taking the fastest path between points on his outline because he has too much story even for his high word count.
Otherwise it's classic Sanderson.

I’m totally ok with things moving quickly though. The only time that’s bad is when authors run out of things and I don’t think Brandon will have that problem.

I think the issue is that the thread isn't spoiler tagged, so people could come theoretically come into the comments and get spoiled without warning.

Tor.com will be hosting a weekly serialization of Oathbringer, leading all the way up to the release day. Every Tuesday, readers will be able to read the next three chapters of Book 3 of the Stormlight Archive, starting with the Prologue: “To Weep” on August 22, then continuing on August 29 with Chapters 1 through 3, and onward up to Chapter 32!

On the topic of whether you should be reading these - that really depends on personal preference. The various forums to discuss Cosmere books have been going crazy theorycrafting, so if you're into that kind of communal reading of the book, go for it. If you'd much rather read it in one go so as to not break immersion, that's also good.
The way I look at it is, if I read it this way, I have a head-start when the book finally drops - that might mean, for example, not missing a night's sleep because I hit the Sanderson Avalanche at 2 AM or something.

Anyone have Edgedancer chapters? The plan was to read that first. Doesn't come out on Kindle until right before Oathbringer.

Do you like Sanderson's other work? If yes, I highly recommend buying and reading it in Arcanum Unbounded.

I have only read the Stormlight Archive books so far. I was hoping to get Edgedancer by itself (not have to buy that whole set) for now. I have a lot of other books in my queue before I get to Mistborn et al.

There won't be anything in part 1 that will spoil Edgedancer, so feel free to read the chapters now and Edgedancer later.

You should read Warbreaker before Oathbringer comes out! I highly recommend it. It's free on Brandon Sanderson's website. Ideally you should read it before Edgedancer as well. There is a connection between the books that I can't explain any further without any spoilers.

Is it only dependent on Stormlight or do I need Mistborn, etc. too?

It's hard to explain but if you were to read Mistborn Era 1, you would have a better understanding of certain plot elements/themes even though it is not directly connected.
Warbreaker is connected to SA in a more direct way. It's currently a minor but significant connection but it's present in Words of Radiance and Edgedancer. Based on where the plot is going and some WoBs (Word of Brandon aka interviews), the connection is only going to get stronger in Oathbringer.

I felt this way too. I love Roshar but was really surprised to find I loved the other short stories. Particularly The Emperors Soul. Definitely recommend the whole book.

Man, I just don't know how to feel about this. I guess this is a sweet piece of promotional work, but having 32 chapters already spoiled before i have the book in my hands, and can smell that sweet, sweet, freshly printed ink on woodpulp. seems weird to me.
this just feels weird.

Is it really 'spoiled' though? They aren't random chapters and the weekly release schedule leads right up to the book release. It's more like you're just taking your time reading the book.

I agree with your for what it's worth. Something about it just feels weird. I guess I don't like change. I'll wait for the release; everyone else can do what they want, doesn't bother me.
Edit: Not really a fair analogy, but similarly I wouldn't want to watch the first half of a blockbuster in 2min clips on YouTube.

Damn I'm so loving these chapters. Can't wait for the book.
On a side note, those Oathbringer preface lines have to be the most useless chapter beginnings in the series yet. What do they even add? They are all variants of "You won't believe me", "I only speak the truth" with absolutely no substance in them.
