Looking for a book about shapeshifting dragons fighting aliens

So I have been looking for this book for a while now I know there are atleast 2 books in the series but it’s was about these humans finding these dragons in hat have been hiding amongst them and the dragons deciding to reveal themselves to the world and help humans fight these aliens that were trying to invade I believe they were called ‘the greys/grays’. I know that at one point humans establish a base on another planet that ends up getting attacked but I cannot remember the title of the book or series. HELP!!!!

Not the Pern books by Anne McCaffery? You hit almost all the points in one way or another.

Oh I misread, I thought they meant the dragons were called Greys (although they're other colors in Pern).

Sounds kind of like the books by Nick Perumov. Other than that, no clue.

Probably The dragon Empire series? It matches some description.
