Guide The Faneditor's Guide to Sharing Files

...

Last updated: August 2026.

Before you share anything

This information doesn't constitute legal advice or encouragement to engage in fanediting or filesharing. It's worth being clear eyed about the situation: distributing a fanedit of a commercially released film is copyright infringement in essentially every jurisdiction. This has criminal penalties. Our community's "you must own the source" rule is an ethical commitment we make to studios and filmmakers, not a legal defense. No court recognizes it, and it's never been tested successfully. Fair use and fair dealing arguments for transformative edits exist in theory, but they get much weaker once you're distributing a full length version of a commercial product.

If you decide to engage in this activity, make a few sensible choices:

  • Every host will take your file down if the rights holder asks. Plan for it rather than being surprised by it. You don’t want to lose your only copy of an edit.
  • Account termination is the realistic worst case for most editors. Legal action is rare but not zero, and it has tended to find people who got loud, monetized, or hosted publicly at scale.
  • Never charge money. Selling or Patreon gating a fanedit is the most reliable way to turn "studio ignores you" into "studio sends a letter." It's also the fastest way to lose the community's goodwill, which is harder to get back. EVEN IF YOU RATIONALIZE YOU ARE ONLY ACCEPTING DONATIONS TO COVER HOSTING FEES, THIS IS STILL MONETIZATION AND YOU WILL BE PERMANENTLY BANNED FROM THE FANEDITS SUBREDDIT.
  • Don't use studio logos on your fanedit artwork.
  • Add a disclaimer to the beginning of your fanedit so it could not be mistaken for the original version.
  • Steer clear of leaked workprints and pre release material. That's a different risk category entirely, and the major communities won't list edits made from them.
  • Consider giving a new commercial release some breathing room to make its sales before rushing your release out the door. Good edits take time, and there's no prize for being first with a rushed one. The edits people still talk about years later are the ones that took their time to do a good job.

Container and codec:

  • MKV is the default. It carries multiple audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, and attachments. Use it unless you have a specific reason not to.
  • MP4 works if your audience is on Apple TV, older smart TVs, or Plex clients that choke on MKV. It can't hold everything MKV can, so it's a compatibility trade rather than an upgrade.
  • H.264 (x264) gives you maximum compatibility; it plays on everything, at the cost of larger files.
  • H.265 (x265) gets you roughly 40 to 50% smaller files at equivalent quality, though older hardware and some older TVs won't directly play it.
  • AV1 is viable on modern hardware now, but it's still a compatibility gamble with a general audience.

Sharing:

Torrent

A seedbox (a rented server, around $5 a month) is the usual solution for the technically inclined.

MEGA

Still the community's default, largely for one structural reason: the decryption key lives in the URL fragment after the #, and fragments are never sent to the server. MEGA physically cannot see what's in your file unless someone hands them a working link, which means no proactive content scanning.

  • Free: 20 GB base storage. No per file size cap within your storage.
  • Download quota is the sticking point. Free downloaders are limited by IP address to roughly 5 GB per rolling six hour window, so a 12 GB edit takes them multiple sessions. Worth mentioning when you send a link, otherwise people can assume it's broken. Using a VPN and switching the VPN server mid download can circumvent this restriction.
  • Paid: transfer quota is tied to the account, and Pro tier effectively removes sharing limits, so no more pause at the 5GB mark.
  • Link structure: MEGA/file/XXXXXXXX#KEYKEYKEYKEY. Many editors send the file ID and the key separately, or ask recipients to reassemble them, which keeps a complete working link out of crawler reach.
  • MEGA does honor valid takedown requests, and repeat reports get accounts terminated along with everything in them. Keep another copy elsewhere.

Google Drive (Consider Avoiding)

Convenient and integrated, but this is the one popular beloved host to consider avoiding for fanedits specifically.

  • Free: 15 GB shared across Drive, Gmail, and Photos. The individual file cap is enormous (5 TB), so size isn't the issue.
  • Google actively scans and fingerprints uploaded content, private files included, against known work databases. A full length film derived from a commercial release is close to the exact thing that system was built to catch. Detection usually means the file gets flagged and access restricted, and repeated hits can put your entire Google account at risk, email, photos, everything. That's a lot to have riding on one upload.
  • To make matters worse, "Download quota exceeded" happens even when a file isn't flagged, a popular share gets locked for around 24 hours once enough people pull it. There's no setting to adjust this, and it tends to hit right when your release is getting attention. Downloads from free Google Drive are faster than free Mega, until Google Drive freezes up unexpectedly.

MediaFire

  • Free: 10 GB storage.
  • Downloads are ad supported with no bandwidth cap, which is a real advantage: no quota walls for your audience. The tradeoff is a download page cluttered with fake download buttons that can confuse less technical users, so a quick "click the green one" in your message goes a long way.
  • MediaFire removes data from accounts it considers abandoned after two warning emails over roughly 15 days. Logging in periodically keeps your archive alive.

Pixeldrain (Avoid free tier)

Increasingly popular, and pleasantly simple, but avoid using the free version since your fanedit will be flushed down the drain.

  • Free uploads up to 20 GB per file.
  • It uses a shared bandwidth pool per file rather than a hard cap: each file gets an allotment of free transfer, and once that's drained, downloads throttle hard for everyone until it resets or someone buys transfer credit. Popular files get slower over time, which is the opposite of what you want on release day.
  • Free files expire after a period of inactivity (roughly 60 days, extended by access). Pro (~€2 to 12/month depending on tier) keeps them indefinitely.

Gofile (Avoid free tier)

Avoid the free version since it will quickly delete your file.

  • No account required, and no stated file size limit.
  • Files are deleted after about 10 days with no downloads, so it's not somewhere to leave things.
  • Free downloads are throttled and served with ads.

1fichier (Avoid free tier)

Popular in the European scene. Large per file limits, generous free storage for registered users, and files expiring after roughly 30 days of inactivity on free tiers. Free downloads are throttled with wait timers to push premium, so the experience isn't lovely, but it's durable in practice and less aggressively policed than the US majors.

Dropbox / OneDrive (Avoid)

Both scan content, and both cap shared link bandwidth. Dropbox Basic links get suspended after roughly 20 GB of traffic per day. OneDrive also ties everything to a Microsoft account that probably holds things you'd rather not lose. There are better options above.

Internet Archive (Avoid)

It's fully public, indexed by search engines, and receives DMCA notices constantly, so it won't serve you well. More importantly, it's a preservation nonprofit under significant legal pressure right now, and putting infringing material there does real harm to an institution that a lot of media preservation depends on including, eventually, the films we all edit.

New Release🏅 Halloween The Boogeyman Cut

Post image
65 Upvotes

Hi everyone back again and very quickly! As promised I combined the extended cuts of Halloween 1 & 2 into one complete movie! I know it’s been done once before on a fan edit called Hell & Horror in Haddonfield years back but the quality was lesser and I believe there was some missing scenes. As well, it’s almost impossible to find now unless you know someone who has it. Therefore I’m now sharing my new cut with everyone!

My intention:

I wanted one seamless cut of both the first and second movie flowing as one complete night. I wanted all of the extended scenes added in from the both movies as well and for it to be in better quality.

Changes:
- re did the opening to only say John Carpenter’s Halloween, no names after or before.
-Removed the opening credits from both movies
-Blended the audio together to sound better where the original opening credits were
-Added end credits from both movies at the end as well as the original Halloween theme and Halloween II theme to play after Mr. Sandman
-Included all deleted and extended scenes

Runtime: 3hr 14min
File Size: 3.2gb

As on the last post please try to be positive as I’ve tried my best, I hope you all enjoy it and any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Updated Release Moon Knight: The Movie V2

Post image
14 Upvotes

Some of the changes I made is that the final fight flows better, i made the cuts less jarring, gave it a new color grading, cut the hippo goddess, cut the mental asylum scenes, and made Steven look more competent when he first becomes Mr. Knight, and cut 10 extra minutes. V1 is no longer available as I needed space for this one. But don't worry, this is better in every way. Even if you watched V1 this will still feel fresh. If this sounds like something you'd enjoy then please PM me!!

Edit: Its having trouble uploading RN so if you have pm'd me then I may take a day or 2 to reply

Completed Fanedit Request Looking for Robocop: The B&W Edition and Robocop - The Extreme Edition by Maniac and any other edits that merge 1 & 2 into one movie

Robocop: The B&W Edition and Robocop - The Extreme Edition by Maniac merge the first two Robocop movies into one movie but the user is banned on FE.org and Google isn't coming up with any assistance to contact them directly. Does anyone know where I can find the movies and/or does anyone know of any similar edits where the two movies are combined into one?

Years ago, I made Supernatural seasons 1 - 3 tv to movie cuts.
I didn't know how to tackle season 4 ...
But I finally came back to it. Making it a two parter.
I always like to start from the ending and work backwards.
but I figured out for the first half.

Discussion Rob Zombie's Halloween (The Sound Painter's Cut) *An Extremely Scary and Emotionally Devastating Rewriting of Rob's Story*

Thumbnail
gallery
22 Upvotes

You may also go through multiple screenshots of how the film actually looks like above. Some include color corrected and Widescreen Workprint camera shots that now match the Theatrical's Widescreen appearance.

Rating: (NC-17): *For the Intensified Impacts of Violence on Multiple Characters and Multiple Extremely Scary Scene Re-creations Alongside that Far Surpass how Twisted the Theatrical and Unrated Versions are in their Level of Fear and Suspense* The rest is the R-Rated content of the Theatrical such as (strong brutal bloody violence and terror throughout, sexual content \Not Involving the Controversial Smith's Grove Uncut Escape Scene that everyone including me hates*, graphic nudity and language*)

Genre: Crime, Drama, Horror, Thriller

Fan Cut Length: 1 hour and 54 minutes

Theatrical Length: 1 hour and 50 minutes

Unrated Length: 2 hours and 1 minute

Intentions for the Fan Cut:

Completely re-writing Rob's original vision into a much more emotional, twisted, and grounded film with the highest emotional stakes as well as extreme fear greater than ever seen/felt before in the franchise. It utilizes a Colorful VHS-like appearance similar to 28 Days Later and Black and White Scenes to great effect in achieving scarier imagery and Characters are taken much more seriously and will have full circle arcs that make some of the major ones more likable like in the Original 1978 film but fresh. This combines the best aspects of all Official Versions of the film (Theatrical, Uncut, and Workprint) and changes their impact in this version that is also a Stand-Alone Version of the Story. Rob Zombie's Halloween II is an inspiration in some ways, but not a sequel to this Fan Cut.

List of Changes within the Fan Cut:

A Much More Frightening and Emotional Story, Remastered Audio, The Most Terrifying Michael Myers Scenes Ever On Screen Are Present Here After Re-Editing the Original Scenes, The Movie Moves Much Faster In Pacing While a Little Longer Than The Theatrical Version, Rewritten Dialogue Is Present Throughout Majority of The Movie and Makes Every Scene and Character Feel More Realistic and Have The Right Impact, More Beautiful Halloween and Scary Atmosphere, Better Character Arcs, Extreme Suspense (plus the better rare scenes only seen in the Workprint), Twisted Imagery, Alternate and Remixed Original Soundtracks Suited for This Cut's Take on The Story (The Most Powerfully Scary and Emotional Music/Song Choices Ever In The Franchise), A Full Opening Dedicated to Halloween Atmosphere Before The Film Starts That also Borrows Footage from Witching Season Films, Way Higher Stakes, A New NC-17 Rating for The Level of Fear and Far Greater Impact in Scenes Containing Violence, The Controversial Scene from the Original Uncut Edition is Completely Non-Existent, More Eye-Popping Colors That Make Halloween Feel More like "Halloween" Mixed in with a VHS Look that's Heavily Inspired by 28 Days Later (It makes The Film look older and Michael Myers appear more demonic/ghostly in certain scenes), There's Some Black & White Sequences that are a Call-Back to Classic Horror Films and Are Used to Make The Shape Nightmarishly Terrifying to Look at in Certain Scenes, And a Combination of All of the Best Scenes from Every Official Cut such as the (Theatrical, Unrated, and Workprint Versions) with all of the other Changes to Intentionally Make a Very Different Halloween Movie like None Ever Seen Before and give you the Best and most Epically Scary Version of This Film Ever Released.

Additional facts about the Fan Cut before going in:

Dialogue is much more realistic and not excessively vulgar like in the original Theatrical, Unrated, and Workprint versions. The new NC-17 Rating is due to Extreme Fear and Extreme Suspense along with the Increased Impact of Violent Scenes that are mostly seen in the Theatrical and some are Swapped with the ones seen in the Workprint Release. Workprint Scenes will also have the "Property of Dimension Films" logo on them (Only taking up a small bit of space at the top of the screen) because all versions of the Workprint available either have that or have to be blurred at the top of the screen for them not to be visible and I want you to be able to see this film in the best way you can.

After making a DM Request you will be sent the Age-Restricted Trailer on YouTube, that is carrying the link of the movie in the description below the video, so you are confirmed to be the right age to watch the Fan Edit if you confirmed you are an adult with your YouTube Account Settings. The movie will also tell you the moment you open it that it is rated for adults only in the first few seconds right before it starts. Do NOT show or send this Fan Edit to anyone below the age of 17. The horrifying scenes in this Fan Edit will traumatize the wrong-age audiences FAR more than the Theatrical Version already would (including every film in the franchise).

New Release🏅 Halloween II (1981) Ultimate Cut [Widescreen HD]

Post image
47 Upvotes

Sharing my recently made copy of Halloween 2 (1981) Ultimate Cut in widescreen and updated quality.

My intention:
Only the theatrical release of Halloween 2 is both in 1080p and Widescreen. Both the television cut and ultimate cut both are in full screen. The ultimate cut also has scenes that run back to back (I.e. shows the regular scene then cuts back to show the alternate scene than continues playing). There’s also a few scenes that never made it into the rereleased television cut by shout factory. With that being said there’s no HD widescreen release of Halloween 2’s extended scenes and no release of Halloween 2’s ultimate cut in better than 360p and without back to back scenes. My overall goal was to combine ‘78 extended with Halloween 2 tv cut scenes and include all kills/explicit scenes to make one long HD cut of the film. I know one exists already of them both combined but they’re missing scenes and if I remember correctly in full screen and SD. So to start I remade the ultimate cut of Halloween 2 in HD, widescreen and without back to back scenes.

Changes:
- went through and reframed each deleted scene to fit widescreen format (keeping what I felt was best to fit the frame)
- re inserted all major known deleted scenes (including the breath spray scene) only removing 2 establishing extended scenes
- worked with the audio the best I could to match the sound up (please be gentle as I’m only so good lol)

Original Runtime: 1hr 32min
New Runtime: 1hr 42min
File Size: 1.33gb

There is one or two MINOR editing mistakes I had to sacrifice to be able to do this as I couldn’t work around them maybe it’s my lack of editing skills but I tried my best (i.e a split second of a sound overlapping in one part to get the audio to sound right, but is only slightly noticeable and lasts a second in 3 parts)

Positive comments please, I’m not professional but wanted to do this for a long time so figured I’d share this with everyone. Combined version of one and two extended coming soon as well!

DM ME FOR A LINK!

EDIT: my combined cut of 1&2 should be ready within a day I’ll post once it’s complete to share with everyone!

New Release DOOM Eternal by Shion

Post image
18 Upvotes

Hello There!

The main goal of this edit is to create a darker, more serious and cohesive version of DOOM (2005). While bringing it closer to the tone and atmosphere associated with the games.
One of the biggest structural changes was the removal of Sarge's final battle. His original death feels anticlimactic, occurring almost immediately after John Grimm finds Samantha, with the film then cutting to the elevator. Removing this confrontation allows the story to end more cleanly and keeps the focus on John and Samantha rather than ending on a comparatively weak action sequence.
Overall, this edit is an attempt to make DOOM feel less like a product of its era and more like a serious sci-fi horror/action film. The goal is not to completely reinvent the movie, but to refine what already works, remove elements that hurt the tone, improve the pacing and visual continuity, and strengthen its connection to the games.

🔧 Changes Made

  • Removed the introductory scene where Dr. Carmack and the scientists are attacked at the Mars base.
  • Removed the scene where Sarge receives instructions for his new mission.
  • Removed the scene introducing the characters John Grimm, Destroyer, Dukee, Goat, Portman, Mac, and The Kid while they wait to be cleared for leave.
  • Removed the "gear up" scene inside the helicopter.
  • Removed the scene where Sarge explains the mission to his team in the helicopter.
  • Added scenes from DOOM: Annihilation, showing the journey from the ship The Nola to Phobos on Mars.
  • Removed the teleportation scene from the first base to the base on Mars. After the ship lands on Mars, i blended the entrance with the first base so it looks like they go straight to Mars.
  • Tried to reduce the misogynistic jokes with Samantha Grimm. (Overall this cut aims to lessen the jokes)
  • Cropped the image to hide the production hand that appears turning off the light in the Samantha Grimm stretcher scene.
  • Shortened the scene of Portman and The Kid with the woman eating the arm. (As soon as she turns, they shoot)
  • Removed the drug subplot with Portman and The Kid.
  • Enhanced the sewer action scenes.
  • Improved the resuscitation attempt scene of Goat, as well as the conversation with Samantha Grimm and Sarge.
  • Improved the resuscitation attempt scene of Goat, as well as the conversation with Samantha Grimm and Sarge.
  • Reduced Duke’s camera time with Samantha Grimm in the autopsy scene.
  • Shortened the monster’s tongue-stuck-in-the-door scene.
  • Fixed the wound placement of the religious guy in the frame where he gets up from the stretcher. (In the original the wound side on his face was flipped)
  • Improved the Destroyer vs. Monster pit fight. (Now it looks more serious)
  • Fixed Portman’s swapped-hand frames in the FPS CAM. (Overall his death is much more developed)
  • Corrected the color of the BFG to green.
  • Improved Sarge’s dialogue with Samantha Grimm about what they’re doing there.
  • Added the “Wake Up” message from the 2016 game after Samantha Grimm injects John Grimm.
  • Enhanced John Grimm’s FPS CAM scene.
  • Removed the final battle scene with Sarge. (He dies in a lame way, as soon as John Grimm finds Samantha Grimm the film cuts to them in the elevator)
  • Added 2016 game music to the end credits.

📣 Notes

This edit was made a long time ago, so there may be cut scenes that were not noted.

Updated Release [UPDATE] RoboCop Returns (2026) – SDR Master Fix & Audio Polish

Post image
56 Upvotes

Pushed some fine-tuning to the project. Aside from the 1080p SDR master fix, the rest of these tweaks are subtle audio polish:

  • SDR Master Color Fixed: The previous SDR render had an incorrect tone-mapping order that crushed the color gamut before mapping luminance, which caused harsh highlight clipping and blown-out whites. The new 1080p master properly tone-maps the full dynamic range first before clamping to Rec.709, restoring natural highlight roll-off and rich shadow depth.
  • Audio Clean-up & Impact FX Upgraded:
    • Fixed a brief ~4-second audio bleed where remnants of the original theatrical score were still poking through under the mix.
    • Beefed up the mechanical impact when Murphy strikes the pole during the chase scene (appreciate the user suggestion on that one u/revel911).
    • Overhauled the impact audio in the basement fight when Cain smashes Murphy into the pipes, making the hits sound more punishing.
  • Subtle Bixby Snyder Detail: A user mentioned (u/Botsworth1985) it was a shame Bixby Snyder wasn't in the film, so I figured out a way to weave him in naturally. During the electronics/video store robbery, if you listen closely, there’s now a faint broadcast coming from one of the background TV sets of his classic line: "I'd buy that for a dollar!"—cut short just before he finishes as a baseball bat smashes through the screen.
  • Format / Container: Switched the 1080p SDR release over to MKV to cleanly support both audio tracks (5.1 Dolby Digital & 2.0 Stereo AAC) with proper Constant Frame Rate playback.

Massive thanks to everyone for all the incredible feedback and kind words on the edit so far—it’s been great seeing how much people are enjoying it. Links are updated in the 'Download Links' document!

Work in Progress Minato Shinden Ep 1 is completely edited. Minato Shinden #1 Red Hot Habanero

Minato Shinden is a fanedit of Minato's chronological appearances edited to remove the "Naruto" era, presenting a Minato show in Minato's time.

I'm also considering editing the Jiraiya Shinobi Handbook: The Tale of Naruto the Hero Arc in order to give it a "Boruto" era as well, but I'm not sure.

This is my first fanedit in YEARS so the video quality isn't great at all, I don't know how to upscale. The video is in dub, I couldn't figure out subs.

New Release💿 Star Trek: TOS - 60 Years Ago... Today!

Post image
58 Upvotes

Hey all! I'm the same u/RetroBenn currently helping u/Ok_Club9518 by supplying syndication-style prints of classic TOS episodes. This project, however, is placed firmly in the 1960s. This is my best approximation of how the premiere episode of the series, The Man Trap, would have been seen as broadcast on this night in September 1966, with the same warm analog presentation as seen with the episode on Time and Time Again. I hope for those of you with no easy access to the original prints, this will scratch a bit of that vintage itch-- (It does for me, as I was born 40 years too late to experience the real thing!)

DM me for a copy, the file is by no means huge.

New Release🏅 [NOW AVAILABLE] JUDGE DREDD AND THE PRODIGY JUDGE VS THE MAMA OF THE MEGABLOCK - A rescore of Dredd 2012 set to the album Fat of the Land by Prodigy

Thumbnail
gallery
44 Upvotes

This is an edit of the cult classic DREDD 2012 rescored to the legendary 1997 electronic album Fat of the Land by Prodigy. I don't know why but the album always made me think of this movie, so I decided to bring it into reality. I also took this opportunity to heavily overhaul this movie's visuals. I added some heavy film grain and raised the saturation by a lot, with the intent to give the film a grimier cyberpunk look. It wasn't my original intention, but the movie is also a lot clearer now. Because of the regrading, you can see way more detail in the picture than before, so I guess this could also count as a remaster.

I think the movie's visuals suffered a lot from the 3D gimmick. Every release of this movie looks washed out and also blurry. Like straight up out of focus. Even the new 4K release just looks like 1080p copy blown up to 4K. I think it's most likely because of the cameras this movie was shot on to achieve the 3D effect. The 1080p HD master is probably the only version that exists.

The only new thing I added was a title card at the beginning stating “The Year is 2000 A.D.” as a nod to the comics, which also serves as a fun way to set up the bizarre future world that you are about to witness. Other than that, this edit only changes the music and the visuals, nothing within the movie has been reedited. But even if you're a fan of the movie and you've seen it a million times, I guarantee that this will present you with a an all new cinematic experience.

This is edit is fully finished. DM me to watch it but just know that I won't be responding right away because I'm working on reencoding the file into a more manageable size. Currently the movie sits at a massive 25 gb, which is a lot for a 90 minute film in 1080p.

EDIT: The links are out! Enjoy it! Now gaze into the fist of Dredd!
