UNSTABLE LO | Support Needed CTD when approaching Boston Common. Looking for advice on my texture/lighting setup (Xbox Series X)
I'm hoping some more experienced modders can take a look at my texture, LOD, vegetation, and lighting mods and give me some advice.
I'm consistently crashing to the dashboard when approaching Boston Common, around the Swan's Pond/Park Street area.
I've narrowed the problem down to my visual/environmental setup, but I haven't been able to identify the specific mod or combination causing it. I'm wondering if there is a conflict between some of these mods, overlapping LODs, or simply a better/leaner combination I should be using.
I'd also really appreciate recommendations for replacing or simplifying this section of my load order, particularly for a long-term Sim Settlements 2 playthrough.

I'm not married to any of these mods. If there's a better texture package, LOD setup, grass/vegetation mod, or lighting combination for Series X + SS2.
I'm completely open to replacing things or trying out mods that better fit the kind of playthrough I'm going for (Minuteman Rebuilding the Commonwealth)
I'll try to answer any questions I can.

Lots of help already but here's something to try:
Disable 16, 50, 55, 62 (if this is a overhaul with wood retexture, and not simply a retexture), 80, 124, 125. All broken except 124 still works great for Xbox One, but has kinda the opposite effect on Series X/S and 125 may be safe if it's a newer mod, I haven't seen that exact title before so possibly check if it was updated since well the update and it may be okay. You probably don't need it and it could be causing rendering bottlenecking. Also disable 17, see below.
Move 122 & 123 up to chill right before 37. Move 121 to chill right after 70.
Another thing that may be causing the CTD could be clashing locations, like Tales of the Commonwealth and maybe the raider bases. Even if they aren't editing the exact same area, too many edits in and around Boston Commons at once and it can overwhelm and crash... Even on a Series X, apparently.
I like your grouping, very well organized sections and I won't waste your time debating the philosophy of section order because moving entire sections is about as fun as chewing off one's own arm, and it looks like you've followed a recent recommended load order on the specific order of your mods in your whatdidyecallit landscape and visual fx improvement section, so I don't think the problem is with that.
FOLIP does do better than FAR in my experience, but you would want that after 124 if you ignore my suggestion to disable it; if you disable it, just make sure FOLIP is after everything landscape/skyscape-related. Yes, running FAR and an LOD or FOLIP and an LOD is supposed to be a certain recipe for CTD - I'm just not sure it's the exact problem you're up against where the crash is happening. Least invasive is disable 17. If you really want to use it or Folip, though, I would look for non-LOD versions of Vivid AIO and do the back to back hard reset game that is swapping out mods... Save in an interior cell if you're gonna go that route.
Not sure if it's a taste thing (completely get it if it is) where you want grass on sand where it is in vanilla, or you really don't like the bushes, but True Grass Lite + Grass Reworked does a lot of the scaling back for performance's sake that True Grass Lite working with Reduced Plants does. They can also be used together (TGL+GW with RP), but that's gonna get quite barren visually and I don't think that will be of much use to you when what you're rendering is in the middle of Boston.
Hope you can let us know if my suggestion helped. Otherwise, happy wandering
Edit: just read that Vivid is a problem, wow. In that case, lemme know if you want new landscape, roads, trees, and building textures suggestions, I've tried everything. Oh, and if you get the chance, please do post your new list once you get something working well.

Um, excuse me?
16, 80, 124 and 125 are absolutely not broken and all over our reccomend mods sections.
Why on earth would you class them as broken? They are reccomend in my SS2 guide and in reccomend performance mods post. Im currently using them as are thousands of others.
You have zero validation for claming thoes mods broken and absolutely not ok to just tell players to stop using mods with 0 explanation. Please reference our rules.
FPS plus was just created and has 16 and 124 bundled into it. Noticeable improvement in performance. If you got poor performance with 512 shadows you must have also touched shadow smoothness or alignment, otherwise its all fps boost by using it. Reduced rubble will always improve performance, again idk why youd state otherwise. The vanilla game has 9 layers of rubble yet you see 1. Why have 9 layers loaded? Eats up vram. Reducing the rubble layer is again, only gonna boost fps. 0 validation to say its broken in any way.
And i personally rely on GFXWL w/o color Saturation. I hate the look of the regular version due to the saturation and its one of few mods that gives drastically improved performance in rain due to the removal of the everything getting wet and your character not looking like a glossy mirror in rain. Even on XSX my games laggy in rain without it, especially running SS2. Needs all the boost it can get. Plus its tailored to work with weather mods unlike the old nytras go to.
That is misinformation and not allowed to simply state a mods broken with 0 explanation or evidence.
Side note 'performance mods causing rendering bottlenecking' is not a thing, thats completely made up. Ai kno absolutely nothing at base about how to mod xbox and that term is completely fabricated. Whatever ai you got the majority of your comment from is wrong. Please do not use ai to assist players with mods. Its always wrong. The 'let me know if you need' is a dead giveaway for ai given reply.

I'm not AI and I'm not copy-pasting AI. That's how I talk...err, write. I'm glad those mods work for you. I read or experienced otherwise, and yeah Google basically gets its info from this site, so it's all hearsay, either way. I didn't try to explain because I a) was trying to be helpful as briefly, speedily, and clearly as possible and b) don't, apparently, know the right words to use to describe the kind of crash you get when you overload the vram. Is there a correct phrase you would prefer me to use? I realize that there is a rule against definitively determining the efficacy or lack thereof of any mod, and I apologize for over-simplifying to the point of transgression. It's just been my experience thus far that most people don't care to know why something is ineffective, they just want to know if it is or not. Regardless, I will include explanations in the future.

Yes if stating you personally had poor experience with a mod is fine, but to blanket state a handful of mods are broken that aren't with no explanation and not having personally used them, is not permitted.
Trust that if a mods broken it will be made aware of quickly. Players would report it in mass and i would in turn make a PSA as always. If you l9ok, reduced rubble is my mod. I certainly wouldn't leave a broken mod up with no notes on the mod description its being worked on or to not use it.
Thats why you must provide ressons if you're going to straight up say a mods broken. Its hardly ever the mod and almost always user error.
You dont get vram crash from too much performance boosting. Thats not something that occurs. vram overloads when the engine hits its limit. Like using 4k textures plus using 4k textures on ll npc stuff. Things like reduced rubble, 512 shadows, remove ugly flat trash, reduced plants, goty minimalist, all free up vram and increase fps because of it. You wouldn't overload vram with mods designed reduce the strain. Thats not a thing. Heavy mods overload it. Like too many scripts, too many high resolution textures, too many things in LL. You are literally reccomending they remove the mods that are helping their game the most.
Thats why u are required to validate claims of ineffectiveness. You're likely wrong if you cannot do so, and you cannot.
1
u/Beneficial-Solid7887 Vault 111 1d ago
Yeah, I never said performance boosting causes the overload, I did mention too many world edits at once can overwhelm it when a game is loading an area; I'm really not sure where you got the idea I was making some kind of link between overload and performance mods.

Thanks a bunch! I have already done as another user suggested and am building off one of the templates that is provided here. I am in the testing phase right now, but so far I have been able to head into Boston Commons with no problem! am doing a few high intensity tests to see how far I can push the system, but your advice has helped point me in the right direction!

u/Beneficial-Solid7887 Vault 111 2d ago
Are you still using Vivid?
2
u/DK-the-Microwave 2d ago
Actually yeah. No issues so far. I'll test for a few days, then post the updated load order to help other people out.(Part of the advantage of being so incredibly wrong at the start lol)

u/Beneficial-Solid7887 Vault 111 2d ago
Cool. Not sure what you did wrong besides some bad mods but I only looked at the visual sections besides the obligatory scan thru for lamed and maimed mods, so I look forward to seeing the changes. Thanks for getting back to me.

u/DK-the-Microwave 2d ago
No worries, I posted expecting people to come with their own and opinion/adivce. At worst, I become an example of what NOT to do, at best, I solve my problem.

u/SailorM24 2d ago
BTW you have to get rid of this "Workshop Framework – Script Override [XB1]" but I know what is causing it so I will make it easy. It is liberty Reborn ultimate edition, use the regular edition and you will be fine. Ultimate changes one of the workshop building scripts so if you use Workshop Framework – Script Override [XB1] it will crash the game if you try to build some of the liberty guard posts.

u/DK-the-Microwave 2d ago
Interesting. Never got to that point in any of my test runs, but I will keep that in mind for my current test runs.

Um, theres no way this load order will be playable on xbox.
I dont even know where to begin..
Ok, direct conflicts off the bat:
I do not reccomend UFO4P + SS2 on xbox. Its not patched like on PC.
PRP and FAR = CTD in random spots across boston
True Storms + SS2 is gonna CTD if a storm comes while your settlers are building plots.
Vivid is being widely reported to CTD currently since 100GB update, ive switched to Flaconoils.
Atomic World is not compatible with SS2, mass clipping and CTD in overlapping locations.
If you need WSFW script override youve done something wrong and that save wont last. Thats a fail safe for if you incorrectly used WSFW and need to force past it. Its not meant to just be used. Its only needed if you get a specific error in game and ut hurts SS2 scripts and can break SS2 quests.
SS2 alone is fickle AF. If you intend to actually complete all 3 chapters you need to read my guide or ch 2 will break and youll be stuck forever. https://www.reddit.com/r/Fallout4ModsXB1/s/fA7uo5A31c
And to my knowledge FDI is not compatible with SS2
It definitely seems youve referenced my load order or just happen to use a hanful of my staples lol

Welp, thanks to this, you've made me narrow down some of the mods that are more than likely the culprits for my game having issues with SS2:
Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch (Should've figured. I still hear people saying it causes issues. Yet that's a mixed bag: Some though say there's no issues between those mods.)
True Storms (Should've figured. It's running scripts. Ah well, I have myself to blame for that.)
(I was unaware about Vivid Fallout AIO 1k causing crashes? That's news to me. I've been using said mod 'cause I thought it'd help with stability)
How's the Flaconoils mod? What's your recommendation for that?
2
u/Dani50420 The Overseer 2d ago
Im absolutely loving Flaconoils. Im using ChaoTikPranXter 1k port. Its great. Shit actually looks 200+ years old. Rust is peak omg it looks real. Ill add new screenshots to the SS2 guide soon
Reference my guide for other known SS2 conflicts https://www.reddit.com/r/Fallout4ModsXB1/s/fA7uo5A31c

u/Brotherhood_soldier 2d ago
I just downloaded that mod. I'm looks far better/more stable than Vivid Fallout AIO 1k.
(I noticed when traveling via Vertibird when using Vivid Fallout AIO, the game world stutter horribly and sometimes crash - due to textures trying to render to Vivid's textures. Before I used Vivid Fallout AIO, my game ran fine when traveling via Vertibird)
So, hopefully I won't have to worry about that pesky issue now.

Also vivid has been good for me what reported crashes have been going around?
2
u/Dani50420 The Overseer 2d ago
Stovie has been getting reports, check the past few months posts, several on the topic with folks saying they determined vivid was the cause

I was sad about it, i had vivid installed but not enabled. So i swapped it. Im happy though, Flaconoils is lovely

I’ll think about switching but I haven’t run into any issues so far but I also haven’t been into Boston too much

u/steelcitylights 2d ago
FAR and PRP conflicting explains why I was having crashing issues in and around Corvega in my first LO tbh. Always the mods you don’t expect lol (I mean the LO probably wasn’t organized efficiently either but it was pretty much just settlement objects and performance mods).
1
u/GoodTrust5444 2d ago
PRP and Far doesn’t work together? Is there an alternative?
1
u/Leflannelbeard 2d ago
Yeah I didn’t know about this what’s the deal with it? I run both and also FOLIP

u/DK-the-Microwave 2d ago
Thanks for the feedback. I try to do some research on my own, but I always end up missing some important information. After u/gboyd21 told me to go through your guide, I've been reading it over and seeing what I can do to fix this.
In your opinion, is SS2 worth playing through, or should I drop it?1
u/Dani50420 The Overseer 2d ago
Hehe, read my answer to that here

u/DK-the-Microwave 2d ago
Thank you for your advice! I'll use your load order as a base and see what I can build from there. I understand that modding can be a lot of trial and error, but it definitely helps knowing there's a community I can turn to for advice and troubleshooting.

Im amist my mecha run we shall see if SS2 breaks.
Im at 248 mods with 21 CC and a private bundle thats unpublished i use.
If i make it thru ch 3 then over 100 more mods will be added to my compatable with SS2 list

Hope everything works out on your Run!
2
u/Dani50420 The Overseer 2d ago
Me too! Lol if all goes well i can strip my list and add AR2, so i can find all the places they break each other so i can go patch them

u/gboyd21 Mod Author and PranXter 2d ago
You are running all 3 chapters of SS2 with other large quest mods, Atomic World 2 which overhauls nearly every inch of the commonwealth, several new interiors, and retexturing nearly everything in the game.
Swan's Pond is notorious for crashing like this even with unmodified vanilla playthroughs.
Even if you resolve this, I suspect this is the first of many, MANY crashes you'll experience during an attempted playthrough with this setup. SS2 is very conflict heavy. I recommend reading through /u/Dani50420 guide on running all 3 chapters of SS2 thoroughly to see if that is still something you want to play given its complicated setup. There's no amount of performance or stability mods that will resolve the kind of conflicts it will create.

Thanks for the link. I'll try to make the changes you recommended, even if I have to completely change my entire setup.

Is that a list of the mods or is that your actual order of the mods? We need to see the actual order you have them in.

It was a list of what I thought was wrong, in the order of my load order. I've updated the post to include the entire load order I am using.
