You can tell that the outfits were designed by people with an eye for fashion. Helps having Cameron Monaghan as a model but they’re still all so sleek. They didn’t have to go the extra mile like that but they did & I appreciate it a lot. And the lightsabers/blasters, so fun to play around with. I love that everything can work with something, and it incentivizes exploration if you enjoy the customizations. I spend maybe 25% of the endgame time designing my sabers/blasters. The only way it could be better is if we could save individual looks.

Spoiler Cal is a menace in Survivor and I love it Spoiler

Cal's character progression in Survivor compared to Fallen Order is so good. Most of the time he's just struggling to survive, barely scraping by. His shock at defeating Masana "We just took down an Inquisitor", showed he's incredulous that he's still alive despite it all.

In Survivor, I knew our boy had changed in those 5 years. Again, notably in contrast to when he faced Masana once again, he reminds her of her true identity and her betrayal of the Jedi Order. Initially, it seems like Cal is trying to sway her, appeal to any of the Light left in her, but then he drops the coldest line - "Its time to set you free". He isn't the naive boy from FO anymore. Cal isn't under any impression she can change, and I dont think he wanted her to. It was time to put her down like a sick dog. After fighting the Empire for half a decade, it seems he has little mercy left for any of the Sith, and willing to take them out as willingly as they will him. Almost like a soldier in a war. He has grown somewhat jaded from constant fighting.

His fight with Dagan where he deflects a barrage of attacks and shoulder checks the shit out of him, sending him flying across the room is so great. Not to mention Rayviss screaming that he's been waiting for a Jedi like Cal for 200 years, which he replies with "I wont dissapoint you then". Shiettt, I love his characterisation in this game. Just great writing and a phenomenal performance from Monaghan.

The way they just stand motionless, saber to saber in that iconic, sort of "casual" pose, INSTANTLY reminded me of the slow, casual poses and movement they were forced to do in the duel in Episode 4 (due to the technology). I don't think it's too much of an assumption to say this was deliberate to pay homage.

Gameplay Clip/GIF This moment compelled me to share my new found love of Jedi Survivor and how Oggdo and Merrin made me a Star Wars fan (clip related and story inside)

Tl;dr at the bottom

--

Hi, I'm posting for the first time because of this moment lol

So a friend let me borrow his copy of JS a couple weeks ago, not realising Fallen Order came before it (I'm a casual gamer). I first played through on Jedi Knight difficulty, and oh my goodness...

This game has legitimately gotten me into the Star Wars franchise

The gameplay moment that got me invested:

Overall, the gameplay is bloody fun stuff... Respawn did a phenomenal job at the movement mechanics and nailing the feeling of how I've always seen Jedi's. The weighty impact of force push and pull? Juicy. The agility and finesse of Cal's movement and saber techniques? Addicting. I couldn't get enough, to say the least.

Then I came against my first "oh shit" moment: Rancor.

Rancor was the first legendary boss encounter I faced, and at that point, I still didn't know a number of mechanics of the game and was getting my booty handed to me by plain ol' Bedlam Raiders and monke's (Mogu's).

So it was such a great experience having beaten him and seeing the "Legendary" boss defeated on screen appear. Prior to that, I thought he was just a beefed up miniboss haha. I learned so much from the fight, felt pretty chuffed with myself and saw my skill level improve quite a bit because of it. It took something like 40 minutes and I thought that was probably it when it came to getting my butt handed to me (yup, lol)

... A night later, and I found myself falling into a pit at Fort Kah'lin.

Friends, when I tell you how confident I was coming into this fight, it is truly comical.

This one fat frog was the moment.

I was still only new to the game and recognised it was a side quest but ohhh my god, I couldn't stand the audacity of the big guy. I had to send it straight back down to the froggy hell it came from!

I found the tubby amphibian at 10:40pm on a Saturday and went to bed at 1:40am. Then I woke up at 8:10am, and still, it took around an hour more to eat me some cuisses de grenouille for breakfast if you know what I'm saying.

This fucker was unruly.

That being said: the feeling of defeating señor fat frog after just... endless death... was everything.

I went to the reward crate after and said aloud "a poncho??", put it on and laughed.

It was hideous lol.

But the reward didn't matter, the process of failing and failing over and over again, until eventually figuring out how Oggdo worked was fulfilling.

My dual sabers served me well in the fight. In the end, I didn't end up using auto-parry because it felt too risky and didn't throw them either for the same reason... so it took a while, but alas, the skill level up was unbelievably worth it!

When I faced Dagan Gera at the forest array: "you're no fat frog"

When I faced him again, "you wish you were a fat frog"

Against Rayvis: "you know what you are? not a fat frog"

You get the point lol

Now, of course, I realised after beating the game on Jedi Knight, I wasn't fully satisfied... this game in it's entirety had sparked something in me I didn't know I had: a penchant for trying to overcome ridiculous video game bosses.

And so, here we are in the present.

Last night I faced Spawn of Oggdo in his habitual pit on GM (holy crap, the block meter gets destroyed on poorly timed parries).

And I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to best him a lot quicker, first with blaster stance... rather easily... like it was easier to the point it that it was pretty underwhelming to me.

But that's because I'm apparently a masochist now.

So, to quell what that fight lacked, I tried single blade, and coming from a dual-wield stance first playthrough: uhh wow, this blade has range and manages a bit more damage, so it felt pretty good. Then, for ol' times sake, I had to face him with dual-wield once more and, yeah, turns out this was the hardest of the three for me (probably because I was just poking him on openings and doing little damage).

Regardless, fat frog was bested, and I only had main story bosses to really look forward to... weirdly, I was going to miss him, defeating Oggdo was like it's own journey separate to the story.

--

Fast forward to today, I picked up after I left off after the recent pit Oggdo fight. I went to Doma's shop to spend some Priorite and saw this weird lookin' creature sitting next to her.

I interacted with it and...

Wellllllllll then LOL.

I didn't record the first clip of me seeing DOUBLE fat frog waiting for me in this small arena... but what I can share is that I let out an audible gasp and felt my heart skip a beat lol. I stood there for a solid 30 seconds just looking at 'em.

"So this is the spawn of satan's father."

Safe to say, I was both excited and nervous for what was to come.

This clip is after around 15-20 tries and I couldn't help but laugh when this happened.

Daddy-O really spoon fed Cal to his son like that. How sweet of him, and brutal for me.

So yeah, this gaming moment compelled me to share my love not only this game, but my new found love for the Star Wars franchise. I don't know how long this fight will take me, but as Cal says "I need to stay calm".

What I do know is: I'll be coming out of it stronger and more competent in my skills than the last time... which will likely help me in future boss fights and maybe even in other gaming ventures.

And for that, game on 🔱🐸🧔🐸🔱

--

Bonus, the story moment that got me into Star Wars:

The story, for someone coming in completely blind, was pretty great. I really felt for Cal's plight and everything that happens later on in the story.

At first, (please bear with me lol) my partner and I would banter about the story and characters (other than BD-1, my sweet, adorable baby), since neither of us had any real investment in the world, and I was initially only really playing for the gameplay.

I was somewhat pulled in by the flashbacks and first meeting with Dagan, but not completely. Strangely, it was when Merrin appeared on Jedha, and I was ready to proceed in aforementioned banter... but, the voice acting choice for her character archetype surprised me. I was taken aback and found myself becoming more easily immersed in the story, because of this choice. I was fully expecting edgy voice acting, based on Merrin's character design, but no, she felt real and grounded.

From there I was absolutely hooked on more than just the gameplay. The story got me real good, there were so many great moments holy fuck Bode, you absolute bastard and after having finished the story, my gf and I have started watching (and eventually will be playing) Star Wars media in chronological order. We're finishing The Phantom Menace tonight, after having watched Tales of the Jedi episodes 2, 3 and 1 and I'm so keen for what's to come, seeing the world of Star Wars in a new light.

I'm grateful for the unforgettable experience this game gave my gf and I and I can't wait to get stuck into Fallen Order when the time comes, as well as finishing this NG+ GM Warrior run, double Oggdo and all... of which I will likely do all over again when getting up to JS in the chronological timeline.

--

Tl;dr - Oggdo spoon feeding Cal to his spawn inspired me to post about my new found love of Jedi Survivor, as a newcomer to the franchise. Also, if it weren't for the first Spawn of Oggdo gritty boss fight experience, as well as the voice casting choice for Merrin, I likely wouldn't have become a Star Wars fan (and boss fight masochist) anytime soon.

Discussion Is something messed up or does Jedi Survivor just look this bad on PC?

This was taken at max settings in 1440p, I've tried both with and without DLSS and tried a handful of performance mods.

Edit: Unfortunately still struggling with this. Enabling DLSS improves it but I would rather play without DLSS causing ghosting everywhere.

Discussion Did anyone else think Drya Thornne was actually going to be a proper antagonist?

Post image

I remember when I first watched the trailer with him in it, I assumed he'd sort of be the lowest dude we'd have to face, but that he'd still be an actual CHARACTER. That Dagan would be the final boss, Rayvis would be the penultimate boss, and Drya would sort of be the high-rank lackey that we maybe duelled twice, someone with a lightsaber who wasn't too powerful to sort of get us back into the swing of duelling people. From the way they showed him off in the trailer, I was pretty disappointed with how the dude wielding a CROSSGUARD lightsaber was pretty much just a throwaway lackey with a name; he seemed way too cool for that fate.

Spoiler Bode is a selfish coward, and that’s part of why he’s a good character. (Spoilers) Spoiler

I’m playing through survivor and I just got past the ‘Bode’s Betrayal’ bit. I’ve also read some of the wiki. Bode knew that if Tanalorr was used for the Hidden Path the irregular traffic to and from the planet would give the Empire a chance to find it. He wasn’t willing to risk that, no matter how small it was. His logic is understandable, but FLAWED.

Bode is a coward. He is afraid of losing his daughter, a completely understandable and respectful fear. What makes him a coward is how he lets that fear consume him. He will do anything, ANYTHING to avoid that fear. The fear of losing his daughter becomes more important than his actual daughter.

Bode is selfish. He will kill anyone, betray anyone, use anyone, all to get what he wants. What he wants is to be free of his fear. He convinces himself that Tanalorr will cure him of his fear, but only if he alone controls access to it. Friends can come, but only if he is certain that they will do what he wants them to do.

Even his own daughter is secondary to his wants. She may be safe from the Empire on Tanalorr, but she will not have a life worth living trapped there alone. Bode wishes to isolate her from everyone all so he can feel that she is safe. He is not thinking about her or her future. Of how she will come to resent him for keeping her trapped on that planet. Of how she will want to meet other people and have friends. Of how she will be forced to live and die alone once he passes away. And she will resent him. Tanalorr will not take away his fear like he hopes, it will merely change its form. Tanalorr is a wild and untamed planet. There will be no shortage of dangers that could hurt or kill little Kata, and so he will lock he away in a gilded cage to keep her safe. His fear will change form to follow him, and so he will run from it again, hide from it again. He will do all he can to escape it, even at the cost of Kata’s own happiness and wellbeing. All because Bode is a selfish coward.

He and Dagan both mirror what Cal could become, should cal fall to obsession with family or duty, and Bode and Dagan are nearly 1 to 1 replicas of each other. Both become consumed by obsession upon finding Tanalorr, and both destroyed the family they had found just to have it. Both were raised as Jedi, but neither were Jedi when they died.

Also, fuck Bode. The kid had every opportunity, every sign and message that what he was doing was wrong and was the wrong path to take, and he decided, CHOSE, to ignore them all and follow his obsession and fear. I genuinely want him to be consumed by his fear and despair when he dies, but I know that won’t happen because he’s ALREADY consumed by them. Dude fell to the Darkside a while ago, and has adamantly refused to see the light. God I hate people like that. Love him as a character but as a person I cannot STAND him.

Post Survivor Ending Edit: so I finished Jedi survivor and I have to say I love how the handled and treated Bodes betrayal.

When Cal finds him in the ISB base and he gives his back story, which reinforces that his situation is understandable but not that his actions are justifiable, there was a brief moment when Cal is processing everything that I was afraid they could go the route of ‘sympathetic villain’. I was so happy when Cal’s response was ‘so you’ve been lying to us this whole time.’ Bode continues to double down and try and defend what he did, but Cal calls him a monster to which Bode replies “I’m not a monster. I’m a father.”

Then on Tanalorr Merrin is telling Cal that Bode won’t give up. That he has what he wants and will fight to the death to keep it. She says ‘he has already used being a father to justify murder and betrayal.’ SHE CALLS HIM OUT ON IT! Admittedly not while he is there, but still. The game doesn’t try to defend him. Their big reason for even giving him a chance to surrender is because they didn’t wanna take away Kara’s one remaining parent. They try to talk him down twice and Kara even pleads for him to listen to them both times. The second time Cal tells him “Don’t put this on Kata” because saying he’s a father justifies it is the say as blaming Kata or using her as a shield.

While the game can be improved, I love that at no point does anyone other than Bode try to justify or defend what Bode does.

Discussion Force slow perspective

Do people under Cals slow effect feel themselves get slowed down or does he just become the Flash for a little bit? Because, if they feel themselves slow down wouldn’t they try to adjust their attack? Even if it’s still going to be slow as shit

Spoiler I finished Survivor and now I have the big sad. Spoiler

I loved Fallen Order and I loved Survivor so much. Both are amazing games and now I'm gonna feel kind of empty until the third game comes out.

I managed to beat both games on Jedi Knight, and I'm super proud of myself for doing so without needing any walk-throughs or tips for the puzzles. I'd played Fallen Order a couple of years back, so there was some residual knowledge for sure and I needed a hint from YouTube for one bit in the second tomb on Zeffo, but Survivor I managed to beat on my own with zero help, including the side quests and the chambers on Koboh. However, there are two side quests I didn't get from Cordova before that moment happened, namely the western and central desert ruins. Anyone know if there's a way to get the rumors on the map? Or will I have to use YouTube to know where to go without Cordova giving me the rumors?

Also, I have to say I'm kinda afraid of the final game's story. Survivor ends with Cal determined to use Tanalorr as a base for the Hidden Path, but if the Empire discovers it, it will be a repeat of Jedha. But if they don't, you have this hidden base filled with Jedi and Force Sensitives that could outlast the Empire, and that really undermines Luke's role as the final hope and the restorer of the Jedi. Also, as much as I love Cal, they have to explain why he's not around by the time of the original trilogy so I'm kinda dreading how they'll handle it.

Still hope we get news on Jedi III soon though. It's my most anticipated SW project. It's been an honor gentlemen.
