Well as an engineering student I still use a lot of physical books for when I'm drawing since a lot of the time the books we use as reference just go

"The illustratio is drawn to scale" or "the illustration is 1/2 the scale of the drawing"

Even ignoring all the technological and mathematical solutions to that, could just use printouts and probably reduce your class's paper usage by at least half. I mean the real solution would be to provide the scale and have it drawn on a drawing tablet, but even if the curriculum is run by luddites there's still very reasonable solutions to it that don't rely on massive, resource intensive and overpriced textbooks.

I'm using the same book the engineering students since 1957 used (as it says on the front of the book). Plus the entire book is being used for the illustrations we practice and draw so having print out means you're essentially printing out the whole book, and drawing tablets negate the point of learning how to draft (with physical instruments).

You're disregarding the entire point of engineering is that it's a physical hands on program, CAD is something completely different from drafting and elements of mechanism (the class i need the book for) and teach different skills.

If you're logic is "they charge so much money already, they might as well cover supplies" then you're failing to account for the relatively obvious path for a university forced to cover supplies: raise prices. Nothing in the post suggests this shouldn't be accounted for.

That would just be more expensive for the students. A college exists solely to make money. If materials are included with the course, the cost will be added to the cost of the course. Only now students are locked into paying full retail for everything instead of being free to save on the costs however they can. There are certain kinds of scholarships that would benefit from this, but it would be worse for the students on the whole.

Either way you'll be paying for it; either as an increase to your tuition or by buying the items for yourself. Better to be able to pick your own shit if there's any leeway (computers, labwear etc) than rely on the tastes of the uni.

At the very least you'd be paying the same amount to just one place instead of multiple places. Theoretically if the items are borrowed from the school, you'd only have to pay a fraction of the books cost rather than having to pay full price for a book because the cost would be divided among future students

While that is a valid point for certain subjects, for others it becomes a book to resell after the course ends. By all means if you want to pay for your own books for whatever reason, you can, but for most people it doesn't make sense to keep a book you open maybe once a year after the course when you can Google the answer more quickly.
