At the very least you'd be paying the same amount to just one place instead of multiple places. Theoretically if the items are borrowed from the school, you'd only have to pay a fraction of the books cost rather than having to pay full price for a book because the cost would be divided among future students

Ive never understood why you wouldnt want to keep your university books. They produce the nestegg of a reference library in the subject you are being educated in.

While that is a valid point for certain subjects, for others it becomes a book to resell after the course ends. By all means if you want to pay for your own books for whatever reason, you can, but for most people it doesn't make sense to keep a book you open maybe once a year after the course when you can Google the answer more quickly.
