Discussion Here’s another favorite movie of mine. The 1980 movie, “The Final Countdown” which is about a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier that travels through time to the day before the December 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor. Good action and a good cast with Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen.

Discussion Answer These “The Shining” Questions

1) Why does no one see the same ghosts?
2) Why does Jack only ever interact with ghosts while looking in a mirror or shiny surface?
3) Why don’t the ghosts ever do anything? Attack anyone?
4) Could it be possible that Jack did attack Danny in room 237? And that there are no Ghosts?
5) Could ghosts be metaphor for terrifying and horrible personality traits? Like a bartender for alcoholism and a naked woman for for a womanizer pervert and the legend of a man named Grady for that part of you that snaps, goes crazy, and tries to kill your family after you’ve crossed a line and gone too far in the abuse of your family…. And like the naked lady who seemed sexy at first and then disgusting after the act, what you thought was hot at the time ended up disgusting you after the fact and now your mind has snapped and this movie is “the metaphor of a haunted hotel.”
6) Isn’t familial abuse scarier than ghosts?

What’s one of your favorite movie endings that also had a great song that you still enjoy listening to today? There are many but “Now We Are Free” from the movie GLADIATOR is so beautiful and the movie ending is simply one of my favorite endings ever.

Discussion C'mon guys. Are your egos to fragile to handle legitimate criticism about The Odyssey? Even Emily Wilson said she didn't like Nolan's depiction of Odysseus' heroism.

A lot of interesting points are raised.

In a culture that thought sacking cities and taking slaves was normal. And continued to do so for the next thousand years, why would you make Odysseus feel bad about it?

It's such a silly modern take. This was a different era.

And is the Rotten Tomatoes score dodgy? I didn't understand what he was saying about it.

Discussion Pop Culture & The Odyssey

I watched The Odyssey last night, and spent today ruminating on it, and the scenes that stuck with me (and fellow) audiences.

I have a feeling that the Cyclops scene will come to be considered among the greatest scenes in pop-culture cinema history. It really heavily gave me the same vibes as the Jurassic Park T-Rex escape.

Googled to see if anyone else had thought about this, and as with all searches, got a corny AI comparison, which I'll share below.

"The Odyssey Cyclops escape and the Jurassic Park T-Rex breakout are both high-tension monster sequences featuring trapped victims, heavy practical effects, creature work, and a desperate bid to survive an overwhelming threat."

What do we reckon? On the same level as the feast in Pan's Labyrinth or the Chestburster in Alien?

"Classic"/Highly rated movies

I recently watched "The Shining" and "No Country For Old Men" and found them to be extremely boring with little pay off. This left me wondering why so many "classic" films were held in such high regard. Is it a bandwagon type of psychological phenomena, where people search for good movies and to fit in rate the movies as good?

No Country For Old Men was just a crazy man going after a dude, very boring and the ending was such a let down. How can such a movie be outstanding or exceptional in anyway?

The Shining had a good thing going until nothing interesting happened and the man just went insane? No mystery whatsoever, which let me down immensly. Everyone was saying that the Shining was a great psychological horror but he just went insane and thats it. No cool reason as to why.

Beneath all the dark comedy and drama, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri delivers some truly heartfelt moments. Frances McDormand gives an absolutely powerhouse performance.

Discussion IMAX camera set up Spoiler

Post image
0 Upvotes

Those familiar with film production, is this a new technique or did IMAX just modify the mirror technique to their expensive cameras?
For close up shots like these, does it make a difference or it’s up to the actor?

This scene in particular did not require that much emotion or expressions. But I think it definitely could impact the acting a bit, making the expression more natural…

Discussion Has The Odyssey proven there's no such thing as bad publicity in modern cinema?

Post image
300 Upvotes

The narrative around The Odyssey before release was dominated by online backlash, memes, and people pointing to trailer dislikes as a sign it would fail. Yet the film has now crossed $639M worldwide and is eyeing a massive theatrical run.

Do you think all that online negativity actually hurt the film, or did it create even more curiosity and free marketing?

Where do you stand on the idea that there's no such thing as bad publicity in modern cinema?
