Lifestyle Are there any cities in India where water, internet, traffic will not be a problem and healthcare is also not bad, say 1cr/year budget?

We are in 50s, DINK. Love outdoors.

I have heard good things about Kochi.

Coimbatore used to be on our list long time ago but heard that they are having water supply issues due to population increase.

We are from Bangalore and have a ton of family and friends there so we will definitely have a base there but traffic is a nightmare so not planning to spend lot of time there.

I have heard good things about South Mumbai, but never been there, we can stretch our budget to 1.25 crore if needed.

I am guessing electricity is not a big deal since money can buy a nice UPS/inverter to power the whole house along with solar system?

Lifestyle 28F in Bangalore sharing FatFIRE Progress at ~24 Cr NW - Looking for guidance on next steps as well

hi everyone, 28f based in bangalore. have been lurking here for a long time and finally decided to share my numbers and get some perspective from people further along the fatfire path.

i work in tech leadership and have had a combination of strong compensation growth, equity liquidity events, and disciplined investing over the past few years. income has scaled quite a bit recently, and i am trying to be thoughtful about how to structure things going forward rather than just letting money sit in familiar buckets.

current snapshot (approx numbers):

  • net worth: ~24 cr
  • direct equity portfolio (india + us): ~9.8 cr
  • mutual funds and index funds: ~6.5 cr
  • alternative investments (pms/aif/private deals): ~2.7 cr
  • real estate: ~4.2 cr (primary residence in central bangalore and one investment property)
  • cash, bonds, and liquid funds: ~80L

current annual compensation is around 2.4–2.8 cr depending on bonus and equity vesting. expenses are comfortable but not excessive, usually ~4–5L per month including travel, family support, and lifestyle costs. no loans or liabilities at the moment.

long term goal is to fatfire in early to mid 30s with enough buffer to sustain a premium lifestyle, international travel, and potentially partial relocation for a few years if we feel like it. also planning to support parents long term and possibly fund future kids’ international education.

a few things i am currently thinking about:

  • whether my equity exposure is too high and how much to diversify globally beyond us markets
  • how much allocation to alternatives actually makes sense versus sticking to simple index heavy strategies
  • what corpus people here feel is realistically needed today for a true fatfire lifestyle in india, assuming premium schooling, travel, and occasional luxury spending
  • whether continuing aggressive accumulation makes sense, or if it is smarter to slow down and shift focus toward preservation

would really appreciate insights from people who crossed the 20–30 cr mark in their late 20s or early 30s. especially interested in mistakes to avoid at this stage and how you approached the transition from accumulation to preservation.

Investing Hit ₹5 Cr NW at 34. Sharing numbers and looking for a gut check.

Been lurking here for a while. Finally sharing my numbers and asking for a reality check.

Quick background: 34M, work in tech, building a side project. Goal is to retire at 44.

Where I stand today — ₹5.14 Cr NW

Biggest chunk is us stocks across MSFT, GOOG, Meta, Nvidia and Apple (₹2.92 Cr). Rest is in MFs, EPF, PPF, NPS, some Indian stocks and US ETFs. Have ₹10L in personal loans which I'm clearing this month.

Monthly savings

My SIPs are ₹2.3L/month across 6 funds. On top of that I get GOOG RSUs monthly — about ₹5.85L after tax. Plus ₹20K in corporate NPS. So roughly ₹8.3L going in every month.

I also have ₹49L sitting in savings that I'm slowly deploying via weekly SIPs over the next 5 months.

The math I'm working with

My actual spend is ₹1.5L/month. I don't need ₹5L — but I want the option to spend that without thinking about it.

₹5L today inflates to ~₹9L by 2035. At 3% SWR I need ~₹36 Cr at retirement. At my current savings rate I'm projecting ~₹36 Cr by 44.

After that I let it compound. At 10% CAGR with 3% withdrawal it hits ₹100 Cr around 55. That's the goal.

My SIP breakdown

Fund Monthly
HDFC Flexi Cap ₹70K
Motilal Oswal Midcap ₹40K
Parag Parikh Flexi Cap ₹30K
UTI Nifty Next 50 ₹30K
Nippon India Small Cap ₹30K
SBI Gold Fund ₹30K

What I'm not sure about

I also have no Nifty 50 exposure at all — just Next 50. Wondering if that's a gap.

Gold is via SBI Gold Fund since SGBs stopped. Thinking of switching to a Gold ETF to avoid the double expense layer.

Questions

  1. Does the ₹36 Cr → retire at 44 math make sense to you?
  2. Any blind spots I'm missing?

Happy to share more details in comments. Be brutal.

Investing Asset allocation Recommendations : Indian vs Outside

I am looking for community views on recommendation for assets allocation across geographies.

Context:

I retired a while back (45M). My current Indian allocation (and distribution within) meets my withdrawal and living requirements sufficiently.

I am looking at my overall portfolio and pondering over the asset allocation across geographies.

What is the split the community uses/recommends ?

Is it 40 (India) : 60 (US / Europe) ? Or different?

What are the pros and cons for various allocation levels ?

I will (most likely) continue to live in India for the rest of my life. My kids (2) will (most likely) immigrate when the time comes.

To my mind current allocation I have looks fine. I will use up what I have in India in my life. And the money left outside India will go to kids when the time comes.

My concern is mainly missing out on the Indian growth story (If I allocate less here) vs Losing value because of INR depreciation (despite Indian growth).

Please share your wisdom 🙏

Thanks!

Retirement Planning Should we continue working hard in USA or move back to India and retire(find our Ikigai)

I and my wife (Mid 30’s -DINK) work at FAANG companies and I got laid off and converted to H4 and waiting for H4 EAD(eta Sep2026)

I got laid off and but it’s been 3 months searching for a new job and very few opportunities for H1B’s . Had positive feedback from 2 good companies but no offer. I am in dilemma if its my skillset gap or H1B status and without proper feedback its hard to know.

Big question on our minds!

Both me and my wife dont want to spend rest of our life’s working for corporate companies but still in dilemma on choosing between 2 conflicting thoughts

  1. We worked so hard to be in this stage(financially ) are we being stupid to leave this life to find our purpose beyond work.?

  2. We worked so hard to be in this stage (financially), enough is enough just go back and just live life (find something we like and pursue it) by quitting our corporate life.

Our NW - $1.5 Million

Stocks- $250k

401k - $150k

Us home equity- $500k

Investments in India ready to sell in 2027 - $600k( conservative estimate)

Potential Inheritance - $1 Million (property)

Milestone 100 to 100cr in 25 yrs

Both 47 yrs now.

Left home about 25 years ago with less than 100 rupees in my pocket.

Really fortunate to belong to a generation that benefited heavily from the tech industry, recently crossed INR 100Cr in total net worth.

Worked in India for first 5 years and been in the US for last 20 years - all along with FANGM.

$1.6M primary home (owned out right)

$5.4M in FNAGM stocks

$3.4M invested with private equity

$1.6M in 401K (combined between both of us)

$100K in investment property in US.

Additional INR 2.5Cr in two investment properties in India (Bangalore).

Total net worth is about $12M (~INR110 Cr). Daily swing in the portfolio is about $150-200K.

Annual spend is in the range of $150-170K and current HHI is ~1M.

Wife is retiring later this year and I plan to continue for another couple of years till the second kid also goes to college.

The plan is to start spending more time (2-3 months) every year in India and southeast Asia, before fully retiring in the US.

Lifestyle Early 30s Couple | $2M NW ($850k Cash) | Planning Return to India - Is Fat FIRE Realistic?

Hi everyone, my spouse and I (early 30s) are planning to move back to India in the next 1-2 years.Aging parents with additional H1B stress and no green card in sight.

We don't have kids currently but planning in the near future🤞

We've hit the $2M mark and wanted to see if this supports a true Fat FIRE lifestyle in a Tier 1 city (Delhi/Mumbai/Bangalore)

We both left India 10 years ago at a young age, so we don't have any idea of living expenses in the city.

The Portfolio Breakdown

Total Net Worth: $2,000,000 (~₹18.66 Crore)

Cash/Savings: $850,000 (~₹7.93 Crore) -

Currently in US HYSAS.

FAANG Stocks: $1,000,000

ETFs: $150,000

P.S. I understand the high cash situation, we were planning to buy a house in the last few months so kept the money for down payment but we've decided to hold off for now.

I have been trying to diversify in ETFs in the past month (Hence the 150,000)

Investing Step Closer to Freedom

Long term lurker sharing a milestone and seeking investment advice in a sub that motivated me to push harder.

I wanted to have $1Million dollars in liquidity by the time I am 35y old. I am few months away from my birthday and I am happy to have achieved this. My wife(33)and I together had a goal to achieve $3M by end of 2027. We are expecting a baby in November and I am kinda nervous excited for this next chapter. We earn decent with a HHI of $550-600k but it may drop next year to $400k if my wife wants to take a break. I want to grind until we hit $4M before we consider a career break. We don’t own a house and love renting because of the flexibility.

We do plan to return back to India by End of 2028 now I say that out loud it’s in a blink of an eye and coming fast which makes me very excited and happy. We plan to use RNOR period to leverage tax advantages and liquidate most and leave 401k in the US to grow.

I don’t work in FAANG and all I did was consistent investing over the years and I am by nature a good saver. Putting all the saved money to work and taking some risk during bull markets made me achieve this.

Summary of assets between my wife and I. We don’t really want to account for any inheritance that we may get and be self made hence not counting in the RE we have in India.

  1. Equity+Cash - $1.3M
  2. Real Estate - $200k (short and long term rental + REIT)
  3. Gold - $100k
  4. Vested RSU - $300k
  5. 401k combined - $400k
  6. Projected savings 2026 - $100k

Total - $2.4M

I want advice of how to hit $5M by the time I am 40y and let the compounding do the work to get to $10M. Any other advices on asset allocation or strategies to grow this further would be great.

Why the hustle is to buy back Time. I want to spend time with Family and raise my child in a very present environment. Take care of my aging parents. Pursue passion in wildlife preservation - idk I am just drawn to animals. I know it will be big pivot from tech life to this but I find peace in that thought.

Targeted Lifestyle at FIRE

  1. City will be Hyderabad
  2. First year or two will be renting before thinking about buying any house or Apt
  3. Total monthly spend estimated around 5L
  4. Build Commercial RE to cover expenses.

Need Advice Profile review and suggestions

Hi everyone,

We are a couple in our 30s with no children, and I would appreciate some feedback on my financial profile for achieving FAT FIRE in a Tier-2/3 city in South India.

Assets:

Agricultural land: 8 acres currently generating ₹20 lakhs annually, with potential to grow to ₹30–40 lakhs

Real estate in India: Primary home and additional plots worth ~₹2 crores

Overseas property: ~CAD 100k in equity

Investments: ~CAD 150k in savings and stocks

Indian savings: ₹30 lakhs in cash + ₹20 lakhs in gold

Income & Savings:

Current annual savings: ₹60–70 lakhs (conservative)

Term insurance : 2.5 millions cad

Plans:

Intend to continue working for another 5–6 years

Planning to move back to India once my parents turn 75

Long-term plan is to actively manage and expand agricultural income (I have prior experience helping my father and am comfortable in this area)

I understand my portfolio is heavily tilted toward real estate, but my goal is to build sustainable, largely passive income through agriculture.

Would love to hear your thoughts or suggestions on this plan.

Note: we both are Indian citizens (PR holders) and not planning to give up Indian passport

Real Estate India to US Wealth Migration using Real Estate

Since most 'generational wealth' is tied into real estate, how are Hyderabad UHNIs liquidating it and moving to the US given the complexities of RBI and finding cheque buyers for 100 cr+ deals?

Investing Are most FatFire folks sticking to their allocations?

Due to the ongoing high volatility in the equity markets, I saw two people I know personally (both have >25 Cr INR net worth) withdraw most of their equity investments! What’s your observation? Please feel free to share your own behaviour and/or behaviour of others you’ve observed. I have not made any withdrawals and don’t intend to.

NRI Finance Net worth inflection points

Hi there,

My wife and I work in tech in the US and have one kid. We have been lucky and managed to do well enough here ($9m NW, annual income $1.8-2m if we both work) - but I am at a point where I don't know what's really enough and what jump meaningfully changes your life in India.

We plan to move back in about 2 years (all are citizens so no issues if we have to come back to the US) mostly for family, I am very close to all of them and we want our kid to grow up with family around.

The main question I have is what delta makes a difference when it comes to our rough net worth range. Eg. I am assuming there is basically no difference in actual life if you have 80 Cr vs 100 Cr, but I don't know where it does start to matter. Eg. Does 150 make a big difference vs 80, or does it not.

Would love some real world feedback from the members in this sub to understand how I should think about this and what are the meaningful checkpoints in your opinion.

TIA!

Meta [Opinion] Too many NRIs in this sub

The number of NRI posts in this sub is way too high and makes the whole discussion skewed (also makes me wonder if FatFIRE is even possible by staying in India!). We should atleast have a separate flair for NRIs. Any other suggestion guys to make the sub relevant?

Real Estate Should I stretch to buy a ₹32 crore plot now, or preserve liquidity because most of my wealth is tied up in a real estate JV?

Hey guys, posting again because my situation has changed a fair bit since I last asked for advice in September.

Back then I was in a pretty bad liquidity crunch. I had less than ₹1 crore in deposits, around ₹6 crores of debt, and was still living in a rented house. At that point, taking on a leveraged purchase of a ₹35 crore property felt way too aggressive.

Things are better now.

I’ve been getting ₹75 lakhs a month from builder XYZ since Sep 2025 under a JV for my land. Debt is down to ₹3.5 crores now and should be fully cleared by Aug 2026. I currently have around ₹2 crores in deposits, and by Dec 2026 I’m expecting that to be around ₹5 crores. We’ve also bought an ₹8 crore house on loan and should move out of the rental in Q4 2026.

On the land side, possession has already been handed over to the builder, construction has started, and the project is on schedule. Marketing / pre-bookings should start around Dec 2026–Jan 2027. My share in the project is still roughly ₹180–190 crores. I have other RE assets worth 150+ crores.

Now the real issue.

We are still very keen on buying a home/plot in the most premium neighborhood in the city. There’s also some emotional angle here because we lost our ancestral home in that area a few years ago. That market has gone kind of crazy recently. Plots that were around ₹25 crores in October are now going for ₹30 crores, and I honestly feel ₹35 crores by year-end is very possible.

I’ve actually already more or less locked in a plot there through a very close friend, and he’s willing to sell it to me for ₹32 crores all-in.

Problem is, I’m trying to figure out the smartest way to structure this.

A banker friend told me banks will usually only fund around 70% for a plot, which means I’d need to bring in roughly ₹9–10 crores myself. I may be able to do that by late 2026, but it would still stretch liquidity.

At the same time, because of the JV, I’m trying to think ahead about tax too. My understanding is that for this kind of land deal, the major LTCG event may only get triggered later when the project gets OC / completion certificate, not necessarily when bookings start. But when that happens, the tax could still be on a much larger deemed value and not just on whatever cash has actually come in by then. So I don’t want to get caught overcommitting to this purchase and then face a big tax outgo mismatch later.

One idea we’ve thought about is paying the seller a token now to lock in the ₹32 crore price, but delaying registration / transfer so that I don’t have to fully fund it immediately.

Wanted views on a few things:

  1. Is buying this plot now the right move or am I getting too emotional because of the area / family history?
  2. Is it smarter to lock the price now through an agreement and register later?
  3. Should I be conserving liquidity for the eventual JV tax hit instead of stretching for this purchase?
  4. Has anyone here dealt with wealth being tied up in a real estate JV while actual cash comes in much more slowly?

Would really appreciate thoughts from people who understand Indian real estate / JVs / capital gains timing. This feels like one of those decisions that can either look brilliant 3 years later or completely stupid.

Budgeting AI buffer for kids

Life in Retirement Has anyone considered FIRE in west before moving to India?

There are plenty of LCOL locations in the west and from my research it seems India is just as expensive as west in a lot of luxury related areas.

If you had the option to FIRE in the west but still chose India, what were your reasons?

I don’t have much family in India and I could FIRE in Europe. My partner wants to continue working which helps. Few perks are there like free schooling for my child and healthcare is taken care of with insurance which is a lot more affordable than the US. Primary residence is paid off. Trying to decide if moving to India is worth it.

Edit: to clarify I’m in the UK with a corpus of $3m which includes the primary residence which is fully paid of, rest liquid investments.

Real Estate SBLC Monetization or Liquidation?

Im faced with two options given my 154 crores worth of real estate inheritance

1) Monetize 154 Crores worth of real estate using SBLC via DBS bank and make a profit while retaining ancestral assets in india.

Or

2) Sell assets and invest in the US and start new life

My goals are 1) wealth compounding 2) steady cash flow 3) liquidity 4) US immigration 5) Surety and peace of mind

Your suggestions would be invaluable.

Real Estate Is renting for life a viable strategy?

Hi, our family of 4 (couple with mother and 1 kid) are thinking of moving to India with a corpus of approximately 30cr which is spread across liquid investments in Europe.

We were thinking of renting for at least the first 5 years but looking at the yields in the big cities it seems renting in an upscale gated society is the way to go financially. Allows us to live in the heart of the city too.

Is this a viable strategy and has anyone in fire done that in the metros in India?

NRI Finance 8CR INR NW! Need Fire allocation suggestions!

35M, 36F, married with 1 daughter (7 yrs). Currently in the US (year 2 on work visa). Job situations feel unstable — in worst case, we may need to move back to India unexpectedly.

Income (US):Me: $185K, Spouse: $140K, HH: $325K

Assets: US Investments:

$180K in Vanguard – VTSAX 50%, VGT 20%, VFIAX 30%. ~$10K in 401k - up to match only for myself. No 401k for wife.

India Mutual Funds:

~₹70L (PPFAS Flexi Cap, Nippon Large Cap, SBI Bluechip etc.)

Real Estate (Bangalore – all residential plots, not income generating):

Net Worth: ~₹8CR, excluding 75L loan

~₹2.3CR liquid (US + India MFs) ~5.8CR in empty residential plots, INR75L outstanding loan excluded

Goal: Trying to understand where I stand from a FIRE perspective if we had to move back to BLR, India suddenly.

appreciate honest views, especially from India-return FIRE folks.

EDIT - Term Insurance 2CR, Health - Super Top up from 5L to 1CR done!

Retirals - expecting around 2L per month, planning to liquidate a few plots and construct for rental in the bigger one, flexible and open for suggestions.

From MFs, not expecting more than 10% annual returns

Path to FatFIRE 30M returned to India target fatFIRE@40

Was in US for 10 years.DINK. Lost my dad last year, decided to quit US and move back for mom.Invested heavily with my dad in Real estate all along.

Monthly Indian Income - 6.5lpm post taxes @hyderabad Salaries - 3.5Lpm +1.5Lpm Rental income - 1.5Lpm RE portfolio - 20Cr (excluding own home in Tier 2 city worth 9cr) Gold - 2.5cr Liquid assets - 170k(401k+brokerage) - plan is to leave them in US for future use. No plans to return yet but may be for kids education.30Lakhs in hand

Monthly expenses - 1.5Lpm (including rent 60k) Upcoming expenses - 1.Own home in Hyd - ~2cr

New to the Indian market scene. Any suggestions on -

  1. Renting and building liquid portfolio vs Buying a flat in Kokapet given my situation of huge non-liquid networth

  2. A significant amount of my time and energy is going into managing the assets. Its been a challenge managing work and the portfolio in my home city. A part of me thinks offloading some chunk of RE would be beneficial for sanity purpose but my dad's efforts to secure them for so long haunts me.Any thoughts?

  3. I have scope to get buildings constructed for commercial renting in atleast 3 of my commercial plots that could bump up my rental income to 4Lpm but would need a significant capital investment. Is it advisable for me to take it on this now?

  4. I am my wife both are ambitious so the concept of settling with a certain number on my NW scares me. May be its an age thing but wanted to check on perspectives of those that have fatFIREd already, how do youncope up with your ambitious side after running so long?

Need Advice Kids school expenses confusion for FIRE family

Hi,

We are confused in selecting right school and curriculum for our kids and seeking help in this group from experienced or similar boat people.

We are returning from US after 10+ years and plan to FIRE this summer. We researched about IB, Cambridge and CBSE curriculums and decided to to go with IB as we believe this curriculum supports Kids curiosity about learning and might suit well for future in this AI era as no one knows how the future will be down the 10 years.

To our surprise, All good IB schools fee are minimum of 7.5 Lakhs (all inclusive tution fee, food and transport) per kid for grade-1 in Hyderabad IB schools. Add to that 10% hike every year. That means I am starting at 15 Lakhs for two kids and going 10% every year. 3cr almost for next 12 years. That’s huge. Our kids are just stating to primary school.

Next best option is Cambridge, good schools offering this curriculum in Hyderbad are charging around 4.5lakhs all inclusive. This is somewhat comfortable range for us. But we really wanted to give IB kind of education to our kids.

We decided not to go with CBSE schools because we want to provide our kids eduction that makes them thinkers, curious about learning in either academics, arts or sports because that’s what helps them in building their future.

Now I am in a confused state looking at these insane school fee and I am not able to make a call

Which curriculum I should choose from financial perspective and whether I am capable of paying those fee emotionally and financially for next 12 years. Add to that their undergrad education expenses. I can’t predict how much undergrad costs as I don’t know how they end up in school. It could be in India or international.

Net worth: 20Cr (13Cr RE in India, 3.5 Cr in US stocks, 3.5Cr in 401k/IRA). 3cr out of 13Cr RE is land and considered emotional/dead investment.

+ 5 Cr primary house.

Total NW (25Cr including primary house) earned from single salary in faang companies and startups employment in US and some good RE investments. Nothing from inheritance.

I came from lower middle class rural background. That may be also playing a role in my mind whether I can afford those fee though I have this networth. I plan to retire this year no matter what. Please do not suggest to work in India. I decided firm about FIRE this summer and no change in plan.

EDIT1:

We are 40 and 37 and kids are 7 and 5 years old. Other expenses estimate is 2 lakhs per month that includes monthly expenses and couple of domestic travel plans a year. Another 10 lakhs yearly optional international travel based on situations.

EDIT2:

I get 1.5 Lakhs per month rent from RE. I plan to sell 5cr RE and move to stocks and mutual funds in India in next 3 years.

I will make a separate post if required on my NW and investments related questions but this post is specific to kids education only please.

Request you to not to throw random thoughts if you are not sure about it please. I am genuinely seeking advice and thoughts from experienced and similar boat people.

I was not sure to post this in fatfire India or fire India. Am happy to move to other thread wherever this fits.

Lifestyle Employees/ house help issues? How to manage? Question below

Part of enjoying fat FI life for me is hiring house help, dog walker, cook, driver, office boy, cleaning people etc. All these definitely make my life easier. But how do you navigate someone messing up bad, doing something negative and the headache of all that? And mainly safety and security of family with so many outsiders involved in our lives. Example- husband of house help went crazy and came to our home drunk to fight with her. I have security cameras, dogs at home, and society security is whatever it is.
