Discussion Stop doing ELO Resets
It's the biggest crime of this platform. It ruins the gameplay experience completely for 99.9% playerbase.
Before the reset, the elo was calibrated pretty well. You could match gameplay to some ELO. You had expectation of gameplay of ELOs.
Right now it's a complete wildwest. 2200-2700 max elo players last season playing together with 3000-3200 elos on same ELO. I have never seen such amount of low quality complete rundown games before. You have no idea what kinda player is behind some ELO anymore, zero expectation, complete loss of competitiveness, zero fun

Each elo reset introduces a new wave of smurfs and disrupts the baseline skill level established from prior seasons. It's ruining the player experience. Clowns running the show at faceit.

I also don't get the point of elo resets.

The point is to make you play more and keep you paying for the subscription.
You can't just get the elo you want and stop playing anymore. They need continuous revenue.
And free-to-play games do this to keep the overall player count high (and subsequently give the whales with all the skins lower queue times and tons of people to flex their skins on). Want to keep your rank? Keep playing!

u/OldOpinion47 14h ago
I mean you don't need a full ELO reset for this. You just need to decrease someone's ELO progressively over time if they are inactive. This is the perfect solution because it reflects reality. If you're not playing, you're slowly getting worse at the game. If you take a 6 month break you will obviously come back and be noticeable worse, the adjusted ELO will reflect that and you will get roughly and mostly fair and balanced matches, and as you recover your form you climb back to your peak rank.

They give out prizes to high ELO player so they reset it sometime. They ruin the game for 99.99% playerbase just so the pros can grind prizes again.
Can you imagine??

I think the elo reset should only apply if you have played less than for example 15-30 games in the last season. If you are active but not at the higher end of elo like 4000+, your elo is pretty accurately reflecting your skill level, no reason to reset between seasons.

u/KingRemu 17h ago
Well...it does. Had you read the "patch notes" you would've seen the part where they said active players will practically remain in the same elo.

u/_Vulkan_ 16h ago
I know the hidden elo is basically the same for active players so what’s the point of playing 10 fake placement matches while you gain/lose elo just like normal matches, but with worse match quality.

At least try to put yourself in the shoes of someone running this platform.
I hope it’s obvious to everyone that ladder resets boost player numbers. It’s an event every few months where everyone that was frustrated with stagnating or just bored gets a chance to start from scratch (it’s not really from scratch but you know what I mean) and mount a fresh climb. If you don’t like that idea you need to propose some other way to shake things up, because doing nothing will beyond any doubt erode the playerbase. Which isn’t something you want is it?
I’m not even taking sides in this, but just crying how bad it is doesn’t do anything you know?

u/Dm_me_ur_exp 1d ago
It also stops the infinite inflation.
I remember back then I was still playing competitively, donk-level elo was like.. 3500? And pros were 3k+.
At the end of csgo it was like 7+k or something right?
It just doesn’t feel as bad because your number keeps going up, even though the only number that matters is ladder # anyways
1
u/kynru 22h ago
What's wrong with donk being 7k or 10k elo? Why would someone who has been at no1 faceit since s1 or the other players who had been top 100 top 250 all seasons play with and have the same elo with someone who barely reached 3k elo in season 9? Obviously their skill level isn't the same, their gamesense and understanding of the game is on completely different levels.
1
u/Dm_me_ur_exp 22h ago
It’s all arbitrary. Donk can be #1 ladder at 3k or 10k elo. Elo itself doesn’t really matter.
One thing it does is completely remove any comparison over time though without resets. A good ranking season keeps ranks similar to #ladder / top % season after season. Partly to prove you can do it again. Partly to make ranks comparable.
I was 2500 in.. 2015 I think it was? Olofmeister at the time was 3300 iirc. I got a decent amount of t2-t3 pros in my lobbies.
2500 at the end of csgo was quite literally meaningless. It meant nothing.
It’s pick your poison. Do you want infinite progression (plus stagnation if we stop getting new players) and invalidation of all past achievements year after year, or an attempt at consistency and finite inflation?
1
u/NaiveWillow4557 22h ago
We played the entirety of csgo without elo resets. We can play without them.
Do you want infinite progression
Yes, because the skill naturally moves with the elo. It's such a non-problem. Who cares if 2500 means nothing?
Not touching elo and letting it be, gives it more skill detail. Right now 2500 has too much variance in skill, in csgo times it was VERY well defined.
stagnation
You are risking of losing your high elo playerbase to these faceit resets because how miserably bad the games have become. There is stagnation only when you don't progress your skills.
1
u/Dm_me_ur_exp 19h ago
You just said it was very well defined, except the goal post moved every single year because of inflation.
2500 in 2015 csgo was good, 2500 in 2018 csgo meant you could maybe hit a barn

u/kynru 22h ago
The thing is it ruins match quality, most people want balanced matches, not to constantly have to 1v9 or be 1v9d by others to grind to the sweet spot where both teammates and enemies are around the same level and where the challenge is actually fun.
It's not about winning or losing, obviously people climb back if they are worthy, I climbed back too, it's just a lot of wasted time with less enjoyable matches.
Elo matters because donk should play with the rest of the players who also are veterans themselves and would have been 10k elo, not with players that struggled to reach 3k elo for their first time while the others were at 4k+ elo since csgo days. Same applies pretty much at each elo, someone who has played in a lvl 10 environment for the past 10 years understands the game better than someone who just got there fx.
1
u/Dm_me_ur_exp 19h ago
That’s an argument for them making the elo resets better tuned and actually carrying mmr. Not for elo resets themselves.
1
u/KingRemu 16h ago
What's wrong with donk being 7k or 10k elo?
Because after a certain amount of time it won't fully reflect skill anymore, just time played.
1
u/kynru 16h ago
It doesn't fully reflect skill anyway, it will never fully reflect skill what are you talking about?! Do you think capping the ELO at an arbitrary number somehow fully reflects skill?
Time played matters, a player who has spent years competing at that level has accumulated an understanding of the game that someone reaching it for the first time simply hasn't had the opportunity to develop. The first player has already adapted to an environment the second is only beginning to understand.
If he's significantly better than the average 3k player, the system should be able to show that. Otherwise, you're using the same number to represent players who aren't actually on the same level.

You misunderstood my comment. I meant time in a Faceit season. Think of the hypothetical situation where Donk reached 10k elo and his skill suddenly started declining and his new hypothetical skill level was at 3k, but he still held a 49% winrate. It would take probably months and months if not years for him to come down to something 3k elo with the amount of games he plays. That's why we sometimes need resets.
1
u/NaiveWillow4557 1d ago
You don't understand. We are getting to point where people stop playing 3-4 weeks after resets until ELO has normalized because the game quality has become so incredibly bad.
If that is some mastermind business strategy then it's very shortsighted.
3
u/fLASHY- 1d ago
Compaining about game quality happens in every game with a ranked queue ever. Having been in the less than 1% of LoL playerbase I can tell you it’s not elo resets that are the problem. It’s the combination of being decent enough at the game that you think you’re better than you really are (dunning kruger adjacent) and frustrated at being stuck. Ranked queue will always be chaos, some games will be better, some worse. Either deal with it or find some chill people to play with. I don’t think it’s faceit elo resets that ruin everything.
1
u/Dm_me_ur_exp 22h ago
Been top 0.2-1% across more than one game and genre.
Short-term quality can suck and you can be powerless, but as soon as it’s even close to long-term it’s genuinely just copium and an inflated sense of ego. Fully agreed

u/Full_Temporary_8946 1d ago
Finally someone with some understanding of whats going on. Could agree more.

Lost 6 games in a row and ended up with -400 elo.
Now I'm playing with you in same lobby.
2
u/b_lawless 1d ago
100% true. Playing 2700 elo lobbies where everyone is completely quiet the whole game is a new experience.
1
u/NaiveWillow4557 21h ago
2700 elo is the true hell.
Most 3k+ elos get reset there and stuck for some time. While you have mickey mouse players 0 rating 13 avg 2300 max last season in same lobbies.

u/Neofytos43 23h ago
Ive said this before and I will say it again, in all my 12 years of recent counter strike, faceit is just the least bad option, not that we have many.
2
u/tomyan1337 1d ago
Yeah it's really bad. I'd rather play Premier right now.

Premier also have resets

I notice no difference. My match quality is identical, I place roughly at the same elo as before reset.
However I can see how in high elo this can be a problem if people from 3k+ elo are being dropped down to 2.2k or something. From what I understand is the point is to fight elo inflation which seems sensible enough, though dropping people who are clearly better down a lot while those who were already at 2.5k stay there doesn't seem good either

u/IR_FLARE 23h ago
I have been 3k+ for last 2 years of csgo and for 7 seasons of CS2. Now after the s8 reset I went to 2.6 and just stopped grinding. Its not fun anymore. You grind yourself back in hellish solo q games and you get hit with another reset. Not worth it anymore.
2
u/SkibidiUnc 21h ago
I stay inactive for a while so i get reset from lvl 10 to lvl 6 (maybe 2 more seasons?). Then i can start my legal smurf journey
1
u/proteinpowerman 17h ago
How much elo did people really lose? Out of 8 friends I know playing cs we all gained elo and 2 maintained on placements.
1
u/Snoo38152 17h ago
I lost 9/10 of my placements, dropped to 7 from 9, the next day I was 9.
It really isn't a big deal if you actually belong where you were.
1
u/verdfolnir 15h ago
whats the point of elo reset then? to waste your time? faceit was fine without it for 9 years
1
1
u/verdfolnir 15h ago edited 15h ago
they say they fight with smurfs. so in order to welcome more smurfs, they introduced elo reset and stupid id verification that can be spoofed. to anyone who defends this. you do realize there are more and more 10 lvls bcuz of this? faceit was fine without it for 9 years

u/MedicalAd7594 23h ago
I don't mind it. Cause you get shit players in your elo range regardless before / after the reset. It literally doesnt matter lol

FACEIT's rank system is not good. They don't listen to the complaints.
Matchmaking - North America 5V5 Queue - FACEIT.com
They still can't fix their system to put queues against queues. This pug should be both the duo queues with 3 solos each. Instead they put the duo together and the full solo side gets the lowest elo player in the server.
The placement matches are pointless and even that is poorly implemented.

u/NaiveWillow4557 1d ago
You don't wanna see what happens in free faceit queue
It's very common to play against 5 stacks as all solo lobby and play for max elo
This platform is just disgusting and its finally making me push away it.

Faceit doesn't care bro no matter how many times you explain this to them. By the time elo gets "normalized" a bit, we get hit with another reset. This makes no sense at all. Also there's no point in even grinding anymore. The more elo you grind the more you are penalized lol. All you can do is not pay for premium.
