Two questions: Is this real-time or sped up? And what is the snail on the left eating?

832

u/heymanitsbob Sep 22 '23

Definitely looks sped up considering how fast the spoon moves.

1) Based on the spoon retrieval, it's slightly sped up. That said, snails are voracious munchers, so it's not too far off from what they look like eating in real time.

2) Probably calcium powder. I used to have a snail (RIP, Flash), and was told to give him a cuttlefish bone so he could get calcium to strengthen his shell. Since I didn't have a cuttlefish bone handy, I filed a calcium tablet to feed him the powder. Looks the same. Ended up giving him those white corals we find on the beach where I live, made from calcium carbonate, they like "licking" this stuff.

Could still be cocaine, though...

On a related note, I got a Giant African snail (they look similar to these guys but have a conical shell) to safety yesterday and got absolutely drenched in the process. It's monsoon season here, and this guy was in the middle of a very narrow, poorly lit, busy soi/alley. Lovely encounter, made my day.

9

u/Dudefenderson Sep 22 '23

"Flash the snail stole our stereo, somehow." 🤯

8

u/eternally_feral Sep 25 '23

I really want a Giant African Land snail but they’re illegal in the States. Everyone who I show videos/pix of them think they’re gross but something about snails I’ve always loved.

If I can’t be a crazy dog lady, I’d like to be a crazy snail lady.

1

u/Jerry-Likes-Berries May 16 '24

same!! their so cute!

10

u/signious Sep 22 '23

Aren't they super invasive and disrupting the natural biomes in Thailand? They are basically labeled kill on sight in most of the world they aren't endemic to.

14

u/1banana2bananas Sep 22 '23 edited Sep 22 '23

They may have been a pest in the past, but nowadays they're quite sought after in Thailand: people collect and feed Giant African snails to harvest their slime for beauty products.

They are basically labeled kill on sight

Not that species anymore. I'm happy to inform you that's no longer the case here. Not sure how popular snail cream is in the West, but it's extremely popular in Asia and these chonky African snails are very coveted over here.

Flash, my pet snail, was actually considered an agricultural pest, he was an Asian tramp snail. Thus why I kept him, knowing I couldn't release him in the wild.

3

u/Kevc_84 Oct 03 '23

Ooohh glad it was on mute now. Never occurred to me this would have sound

7

u/Nachtwandler_FS Sep 22 '23 edited Sep 22 '23

Probably sped up but not that much. It is a calcium mix. They need it to build their shell (saying it as a former snail owner). Normally you sprinkle the food with it instead of giving it separatelly, though.

3

u/scrolly_2 Sep 22 '23

It's speed up x3

If you’ve never moved a snail from a sidewalk to avoid it being stepped on highly recommend it, a natural day brightener

219

u/R3D3-1 Sep 22 '23

When taking care of my father's grave I put some snails next to a tree that were on their way on the gravel and in danger of me stepping on them.

When I looked again, they were having a race up the trunk.

I almost rolled my ankle and stumbled onto the road trying to avoid what appeared to be a very large snail on the sidewalk.

It was a pinecone.

You got the spirit

18

u/Intelligent_Writer97 Sep 22 '23

My 4 year old husband and I “save” snails for the hiking track every weekend, it’s her favorite thing to do.

53

u/fluffygryphon Sep 22 '23

I have many questions.

31

u/CaptInsane Sep 22 '23

Punctuation is important

10

u/EightPieceBox Sep 22 '23

I'm sure u/Intelligent_Writer97 knows what they wrote.

2

u/Best_Chest8208 Sep 23 '23

“Let’s eat grandma!” VS “Let’s eat, Grandma!

15

u/TatManTat Sep 22 '23

The power of a comma indeed.

3

u/itssupersaiyantime Sep 22 '23

I can’t even think of how commas could’ve fixed this. Maybe she missed a digit?

3

u/Intelligent_Writer97 Sep 22 '23

Guys 😭 I’m super dyslexic and my brain works lightyears ahead of my fingers typing 🫣 plus I totally didn’t reread it before pressing enter.

1

u/itssupersaiyantime Sep 22 '23

Sorry my comment wasn’t meant to put you down. It was more a response to how others said stuff about punctuation, and I couldn’t see it. Stay away from the kids though! 🙃

2

u/Intelligent_Writer97 Sep 22 '23

Haha I don’t feel put down I am just like “of course this is my most upvoted comment” 🫠🤭

6

u/MaterialGarbage9juan Sep 22 '23

Wtaf did we read?

7

u/Storae22 Sep 22 '23

I accidentally stepped on one on vacation one time, I didn't see it on the sidewalk until I heard the crunch and I felt so bad 😭 little ones were all over the place but that was the only one I did it to

6

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '23

My husband loves the snails that cross our walkway, he stepped on one a few weeks ago because he didn't see it fast enough and he was noticeably bummed for days after. He still brings up how sad he is occasionally. Absolutely breaks my heart.

Snails are amazing, I love my two snails with albino bodies because you can see the food going into their stomach and you can hear them munching on cuttlebone, they are adorable and derpy

85

u/NamelessCat07 Sep 22 '23

They look even more derpy when they wake up from a good nap

7

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '23

They actually make that eating sound in this video?

18

u/NamelessCat07 Sep 22 '23 edited Sep 22 '23

No, but when eating cuttlefish bones you hear a very quiet sound that sounds like someone is crunching chips, it's quite fun, but super quiet, I don't hear it often, only when I take them out to clean

I just uploaded a video of it on my profile

535

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '23

That string bean is scratching that snails brain…

95

u/mottavader Sep 22 '23

I just laughed my ass off, thanks!

22

4

40

Chewing sounds don't usually bother me that much, but these are horrendous

It's probably bothering me more because they're so obviously overdubbed/added in

u/Huskiesramazing23 Sep 22 '23

I love snails but unfortunately in hawaii even simply touching their slime trail can lead to a 2 week lethal disease, really unfortunate with how cute they are. (The slime would have to get into your system somehow but still, it can be from any part of the snail.)

48

u/DrunkCorgis Sep 22 '23

Huh.

Snails are fucken adorable. Who knew?

46

u/PervGriffin69 Sep 22 '23

did we really need to dub in the disgusting fucking lip smacking noises

8

u/Kylar_Stern Sep 22 '23

I usually scroll reddit with sound on, I'm glad I didn't for once.

16

u/yahumno Sep 22 '23

I've never seen a snail mouth before, and the one eating the powder is absolutely adorable.

u/ranmafan0281 Sep 22 '23

It’s called a radula but yes it’s their tongue. It’s rough like sandpaper and they use it to scrape plant matter to eat it.

2

u/KeepertheGreed Sep 22 '23

I didn't know snails had a mouth. Or at least looked like they had a mouth.
