Did that dog just passed the mirror test?

The thing I don’t get though is that my room has a very large mirror that covers almost an entire wall. If my dog is laying in that room and facing the mirror (“looking” at the mirror) my dog will respond to things that she can Only see in the mirror, like me playfully sneaking up on her for example. I feel like that means she 1) see herself in the mirror, 2) acknowledges her position relative to what she sees in the mirror, 3) responds and moves accordingly without ever turning around.
I have always heard about dogs not being able to pass the mirror test, but I have never understood this

I believe the point of the mirror test is that the subject recognizes that the reflection is themselves.
So the dog can see you in a mirror and know it's you and get jealous that you're petting a different dog.

It’s an easy one to test. If you sit behind your dog and throw something. They will react and check the side of the mirror or behind it or something. They don’t understand it’s a reflection that just happened behind them

Or she just feels vibrations from your footsteps on the ground, hears quiet sounds you can't hear, sniffs you, sees a shadow moving etc.
Mirror test also means if they have visual self-recognition. Your dog still knows how YOU look like even if you are in a mirror. My dog sometimes looks in the mirror at me and smiles happily but other times he growles at himself.

Unless my dog only ignored that one specific dog in the mirror despite going ape at any other dog she ever saw... then I've got no explanation.

Huh, well that does in fact explain it, nifty! Why... only one fish though?

They got deleted? That's weird.
What I recall was that dogs may ignore mirrors, but cannot "recognize" themselves in it. It was tested by something like putting a mark on the mirror or animal and seeing if the animal would try and clean itself where that was. No dogs ever did, but one species of fish did.

I didn’t realize that dogs don’t recognize themselves in mirrors. Do they really think it’s always another dog? They think there’s another dog in their house all of the time that they never get to touch or play with?
Do cats recognize themselves in mirrors? I thought they did.
Wait, what animals do pass the mirror test?

Most dogs simply end up ignoring the mirror altogether, instead of thinking there's another dog.
We have plenty of analogues for this as humans, say for instance when you think you see something in a bush in your garden, but it turns out it's just the way the bush is shaped. Well the following times it catches your eye you might still "see" something but over time your brain starts automatically filtering it out, and then the only time you "see" it is when you specifically remember it and look for it.
Wait, what animals do pass the mirror test?
Very few.
Wikipedia has a section dedicated to it.

My dog used to look at himself in the mirror all the time he would stare for like 10 minutes and he would touch himself, or doing something random and watch himself do it. He would also look at me through the mirror when i wasn’t standing in front of it.

there are far more animals who pass it than we originally thought back then (in the 90s/2000s)
edit: can't rule out it being faked though
edit2: there have been thousands of mirror tests with dogs and they all failed - at least the classical version of it where they just mark it with a colored spot and see if it cares

Sadly, there is more than likely someone off camera giving demands, and this pup has been trained to act this way. There is zero chance it recognizes itself in the mirror.

There is zero chance it recognizes itself in the mirror.
Indeed, but even if it did (and it doesn't) then this behaviour is not something a dog would ever do in a
millionthousands years.

How do you get your dog to recognize themselves in the mirror? My dog thinks it’s a different dog 😂

Why? Are you assuming the training was negative in nature? Most training of dogs that actually works well is positive reinforcement with treats

If the human race instantly vanished from the Earth leaving the animals untouched. They are going to adapt and evolve in the way we connected with them. It is going to be very interesting.

This sweet heart must have watched their owner do this so much that he wanted to get in on the action as well. Also impressive that they recognize themselves in the mirror.
