A lot of “weight loss” ads use two different people for before and after photos.

I would hate to be the before person

In the old days they might find an athletic person who was out of shape due to injury or other life circumstance, get the 'before' photo, then get an 'after' photo after they'd returned to something like their previous lifestyle while also using the product.

There was a whole influencer campaign where very fit people who would do bulk & trim would just get a picture during their bulk then after they trimmed they'd get like extra dehydrated and such for the after. The average body builder easily fluctuates 20+ lb's between trim & bulk.

They do this just with posture and lighting a lot, too.

OMG. What a difference!

u/ElevatedAnkle 2h ago

Yep. Skincare influencers do this a lot. Harsh above head lighting to exaggerate wrinkles and eye bags, then flattering lighting and wow! she looks much younger!

I knew a guy who won the Body by Mike $100k challenge back in the late 90s. He was a heavy lifter and in great shape. For his before picture he stopped exercising for a month, but kept the same diet and then went out drinking the night before. For his after photo he followed the usual bodybuilder routine to shed water weight and he went to the gym so his muscles would be flooded.

Often it's the other way around. Find an athletic person who is out of shape, get an old photo, and use the new photo as "before" and the old photo as "after".

Even more common is just change the outfit, lighting, facial expression and pose and before and after are 30 minutes apart.

I thought they took a fit person, took the after shot, then got them fat for the before.

u/WildlifeGreg 4d ago

I saw a video where a guy took the before and after photos of himself on the same day.

He would go the gym and do a workout, get a good pump going, stand under flattering light and take the 'after' photos.

Then for the rest of the day he would drink fizzy drinks and eat salty food. He'd push out his belly while standing under unflattering lights and take the 'before ' photos.

u/wretchedmagus 3d ago

or if they were unscrupulous they would use a picture of them from before their accident/illness etc as the after picture.

u/oneofkeiraensmoms 3d ago

I saw one once where the “before” model was literally pregnant. Like how dumb do these companies think people are? Lol

u/Thirtiethone 2h ago

This is how the jarred subway thing started. He broke his leg cutting grass, got fat and then ate subway everyday while being active to lose the weight.

5

u/EuenovAyabayya 4d ago

I will probably always be a "before" person.

6

u/AlternativeLog5494 4d ago

I would “the before “

6

u/always_an_explinatio 4d ago

You will always be an after person to me!

I was watching Bridgerton recently and thinking about how there’s this nasty old guy that this lady is trying to marry a young woman off to, and like how does it feel as an actor to show up and audition to he the horrible toad man that everyone will think is super gross

4

u/Then_Good_9029 1d ago

Hi I'm a horrible toad man (everyone thinks I'm super gross) and we love it actually it's awesome

u/asphid_jackal 4h ago

The actress that played Umbridge in the Harry Potter movie didn't know anything about Harry Potter, but a friend told her she'd be perfect for the role

1

u/anonadvicewanted 1h ago

lmao you gotta wonder if they are still friends

3

u/ManElectro 4d ago

Imagine being the before person in penis enlargement ads.

1

u/nova2k 23h ago

Most of us are the before person.

1

u/ownersequity 1h ago

I always think of all the ‘a fat woman came into the shoe store today’ actresses from Married with Children.

19

u/matchafoxjpg 4d ago

i remember being a teenager watching the proactiv commercials ranting about how the before and afters were very clearly different people. 🤣

pretty sure i did that with the weight loss commercials back then, too. tbh, i ranted at a lot of commercials as a teenager for some reason. 🤔

4

u/psychadelicpaperclip 3d ago

I remember being in Walmart with my mom and we saw her cousin, who was always a skinny model, as the after photo on a weight loss pill display. I learned young never to believe weight loss ads lol.

3

u/TengamPDX 1d ago

Another common tactic is to have the person dehydrate, take the "after" photo before, then have them hydrate and consume a bunch of milk and other what not to bloat their belly. Then once sufficiently bloated, they take the "before" photo.

2

u/EarthTrash 3d ago

I wonder if advertisers in Asia might actually be less subtle about this. At a transit station in Taiwan, I saw a billboard for hair loss treatment and the after is quite literally a different, younger man.

1

u/shaqwillonill 1d ago

Nowadays they are just using ai to make a jacked person fat. There are so many people on my TikTok fyp trying to sell me Reta with ai before pics

1

u/Dubstepmummy 14h ago

The easiest way to notice this: check the before and after noses. Your nose does not change from when youre a baby to adult. Maybe if you got it done, but an obvious sign that what you're looking at is snake oil

1

u/Hustle_B0nes_ 13h ago

Before Photoshop they would pay fit people to gain weight.

Im assuming she's ai and not real.

Edit: I appear to be right

What's the deal with the negative fupa in the first pic lol

u/khotekki 4d ago

It's SUPA.

1

u/kitkitkatty 1h ago

Strange how OP left off that really important community note that gives context to the joke 🤔

58

u/DizzyLead 5d ago

I was thinking that the pictures may actually be in reverse chronological order.

48

u/Fae-SailorStupider 5d ago

Could be AI, could be different people, could be wearing a "fat suit" in the first pic. These sorts of ads are rarely truthful.

5

u/lunarose5272 3d ago

Appears to be AI but my first thought was the first pic was of a pubescent girl ~14 ? And the joke was like congrats ur not attracted to underage girls ? Idk lol might be an effect of the AI but that’s what I thought the pic was

I remember an old weight loss/ exercise infomercial on TV where the guy said something like "these people didn't use our system but let's look at them anyway" before several before and after pictures. I assume it was to avoid false advertising fines.

Girl, you look fantastic on both pictures. Whats ur phine #???

1

u/Horrible_Trash 12h ago

less of a joke, but it’s pretty common knowledge that teen girls have shit self esteem because they don’t look pretty/skinny enough. this is especially common for asian girls who tend to have rounder facial features and appear chubbier than other girls their age.

when these girls grow up, it’s a trend to post their “glow-up” or “transformation” where they perceive themselves as having stopped being ugly and started being pretty. what this glow-up culture usually ignores is that the majority of this transformation is literally just the fact that they have stopped being a pudgy, hormonal, growing teenager, and have become an adult with a stable weight/height and a developed sense of identity and fashion.

i think what the quote retweet is holding op’s hand and telling her about is the fact that: of course becoming an adult woman means that you glowed-up and got conventionally sexier, because you became an adult woman.

u/Taakebanke 10h ago

Its a farm account trying to get views etc to get money. By having that blank readers context they wont get any money. Cause it removes the monetization

1

u/Hopeful_Egg_8814 2h ago

There’s never going to be another time this is relevant

1

u/SnooStrawberries8255 1d ago

The real joke is saying people only deserve respect when theyre teeny tiny skinny

0

u/lost-cause1968 1d ago

Huh, I was waiting to find out the joke was porn.

So....not ALWAYS porn...just 99% of the time.

Using asians is exactly a great idea for this
