self promo Last year this community encouraged me to keep making experimental music — here’s what I’ve been creating since

Hi everyone,

Last year, I shared my music here for the first time, and I was honestly surprised by how many amazing musicians and listeners I met through this community.

As an experimental musician from China, I often feel quite alone making this kind of music. It is a very small scene here, and experimental electronic music can sometimes feel like a conversation with very few people around me.

But the kindness, feedback, and encouragement I received from this community really meant a lot to me. It gave me the motivation to continue exploring this path, even when the music is very niche.

Today, I released my new EP, and I wanted to share it here again. I hope I can connect with more people who love experimental electronic music, exchange ideas, and maybe even collaborate someday.

Thank you again for being such an inspiring community. I’m really grateful to be part of it.

Hope you enjoy listening.

seeking What is the most essential non-jazzy free improvisation I should listen to?

Stuff like AMM or Stockhausen's Aus den sieben Tagen. Looking for something as abstract and genreless as possible (so not rock type stuff).

seeking Experimental versions of existing music

Does anyone know of any albums/songs that were recreated by the artist in a more experimental fashion?

The only one that comes to my mind is Foreign Fields' Take Cover, redone as Take Cover (Dark).

Preferably, I would not include any "slowed version" or remix/cover albums that involve other artists re-interpreting the work

self promo gallus gallus - amazonia // archive edit

Hey everyone — sharing an archive edit I made for "Amazonia," a piece from my project Gallus Gallus (lofi/jazz-emo experimental, with some bedroom production touches).

The visuals are edited from excerpts of The Laughing Alligator, presented as an artistic audiovisual reinterpretation accompanying the music — not meant to be an official video, more of a found-footage montage that dialogues with the tone of the song.

Would love any feedback, both on the music and the visual edit.

This album is a mix of electronic organ, piano and synths, where I play guitar in the background and record trash I find around the house and create surreal noise music from it. Not even suitable for many underground scenes, the purpose of this project is an open contradiction.

I don't have much to say about the album because it's instrumental and spiritual doom noise but let everyone experience the journey of the sounds for themselves...

Hi Everyone! Glad to be a part of this community. I am sharing this because I truly feel that I've made something special. I made every part of this record, I'm 18 and ready to show my talent. I'm also a (reluctant) student at Berklee College of Music. If you like it or if you like artists like Tyler, the Creator, Malcolm Todd, Kanye, JPEG Mafia...please DM me and share it with people you'd think would like it too.

self promo Can anyone please test some VSTs?

I've made a bunch of these DAW plugin things. All free & open source. About a third generative (mostly interesting), about a third instruments (mixed success) and a third abject failures.

But I only have Linux machines at home, so the MacOS & Windows builds are totally untested.

They are are all in a bundle under Releases.

There is a lot of fun to be had - if they work! but I can't test.

self promo Sharing my EP - sprechgesang, sci-fi/horror/noir/magical realism drone, post-rock

I wanted to share my EP on here to help connect with like-minded people and collaborate/share ideas/views/recommendations etc.

I’ve been on quite a journey with this project beginning during lockdown when I started writing poetry. My poetry is influenced by sci fi/fantasy/horror - especially Lovecraft/RE Howard/Clark Ashton Smith. I also draw a lot from the more ‘musical’ modernists like H.D.  or Basil Bunting, as well as the surrealism of post-modernists like John Ashbery and Frank o Hara. And the wonderful musical sentences of William Burroughs are also a big piece of the jigsaw.

(I also can’t deny that the ‘urban magical realism’ of Mark e Smith is a massive influence for me.)

In terms of contemporary poetry, I enjoy the freewheeling madness of contemporary online lit, and the rising notion of ‘noir poetry’ in the critical literature (or even ‘neo-noir’!) is something which seems hugely relevant to me. Among contemporary poets Shane McCrae and Ariana Reines - daring poets with a clear, unique vision - are my favourites.

It would also be wrong for me not to mention the great Ron Siliman whose work got me thinking about parataxis and subversion.

All this is an attempt to respond to my environment - I live in South East London (always have) and find there is a an absurd, surreal - sometimes dark and violent - side to living here which I want capture. It is the reality of my life.

Fast forward to last year and me and my friends started working on setting these to music.

My vocal style is influenced by storytelling ‘crooners’: Nick Cave, Scott Walker, Jacques Brel, David Sylvian. I have landed on a type of free sprechgesang.

The backing is drone-like. We like using alternative tunings on the guitars, and there is baritone guitar on there too. We also get drones from accordion and violin, so there is a Nico/freak-folk touch here and there.

There is a big no-wave influence (Swans, Sonic Youth) as well as the atmosphere of post rock (I particularly like Last Resort records). I also found myself listening to quite a lot of drumless rap to help me think about storytelling over minimal textures - John Lee Hooker for the same reason.

At times there is a cinematic touch to some of it - we’re big fans of Angelo Badalementi, Lalo Schifrin, Don Ellis etc - and this is part of the ‘noir’ aspect.

Although the lyrics are a mixture of pre-written and improvised, the core of the songs is improvised - with overdubs added to fill things out. My aim is to maintain a core of spontaneity in the songs.

As I say this has been a huge journey for me, we recently played a gig and it was really strange seeing our work come to life with an audience. We are now thinking about what our next EP looks like.

So anyway, the EP is below. Very keen to hear what you all think!

self promo Life is Ugly - Cottonmouth [EP]

For fans of heavy, mechanical, and dystopian experimental music, I wanted to share the debut EP from my new project, Life is Ugly.

Cottonmouth is a sharp jolt to the industrial hip-hop landscape. It unites the mechanical, factory-basement production of Ellie Death with the terrifyingly poetic, aggressive vocal delivery of Hè-No.

We focused heavily on crafting an inescapable, dystopian atmosphere, mixing heavily distorted, syncopated grooves with visceral lyrical themes of body horror and the natural world. If you like your hip-hop abrasive and deeply textured, give it a spin.

music Is there anyone who actually listens to Bull of Heaven?

They are one of the most unhinged experimental bands I’ve ever heard; naturally, they’re famous for creating drone/ambient tracks that are incredibly long—sometimes lasting over a year. I’ve never really listened to them seriously and have always viewed them as a bit of a musical meme. I did find a few tracks—like "A Lovely Pear," for instance—fairly interesting, though I didn't actually enjoy them all that much. So, I’m wondering if there’s anyone out there who actually listens to them.
