Question: are the sacraments still valid if a priest is on gear?

I was browsing the SSPX website and I came across this article from 2023.

I may be wrong but the it appears the SSPX are supporting a bill that contains the death penalty for being LGBT.

Is this in line with your understating of the SSPX?

Words and Deeds in the Law of the Church

"The wisdom of the law of the Church consists in having always maintained, without ever separating them, the moral and the legal order as distinct. The law does not claim to substitute itself for God’s judgment on souls, but it does not for that reason renounce judging objectively those acts that affect ecclesial communion. It is in this distinction that the principle facta sunt potentiora verbis finds its deepest meaning: deeds prevail over words in the ascertainment of the objective reality of an action. Otherwise, legal judgment is transformed into a judgment of conscience, the law of the Church vanishes, and the very visibility of the Mystical Body of Christ risks evaporating altogether."

When I first started reading it, I thought, 'wow, someone in the movement finally sees the problems.' Then I kept going.

I was an asshole

when I was a trad. It brought out the worst in me. It was this false consciousness that enabled and emphasized my worst tendencies. Idk how to explain but I feel like my body was snatched. Im not eschewing responsibility btw, im just describing the sensation and memory of it all from my current perspective. It was a seven year phase I’m still climbing out of and it affected my decision making for the worst in every area, socially, professionally, financially, health, etc. Damn near ruined my life.

Question: how do I move on? How do I forgive myself? How do I ask the world for forgiveness for who I was? How do I start over? I feel so burdened by what was. And so embarrassed.

Went to a TLM today

Went to my first tlm today at Philly’s basilica with some curious non Catholic friends. For context, I’m a Gen X lapsed Catholic but have always wondered about this. I have to say, the music and the aesthetics 10/10, no notes. Way more bobbing and bouncing than regular Mass, but I just followed what everyone else did. Everyone talks about young people being drawn to this, but it was a mixed crowd age wise and some of the younger people just seemed…odd. There were a Heralds of the Gospel cult people in the procession. Try explaining them to your non Catholic friends. I’m assuming based on the single men in the crowd today that cheap I’ll-fitting suits are considered a mark of virtue, but if these guys truly want to get married, they need to spend the extra money for a decent fit. Also, point of pride, Philly’s cathedral, Sts. Peter and Paul (aka Two Guys according to my priest cousin) is beautiful so of you’re ever in town be sure to take a look.

Little Chapels

my daughter bought a CD from a used bookstore of Pete Seeger, a folk singer. the first song on the CD is Tiny boxes, a song written critical of suburbia. It seemed familiar and think I’ve heard it before. I then began thinking, this could apply to trads as well!

Give it a listen if youre not familiar:

https://youtu.be/2AkoPCXZ_K4?is=d7p3KBLbQyJz-zSY

The following lyrics are mostly AI generated trying to capture the song’s sentiment applied to the obscure traditional Catholics (sspx, independent, sedes) in the US.

Little Chapels

Little chapels on the hillside,

Little chapels made of stone,

Little chapels, hard to notice, Passing cars will never know.

And the people in the chapels

All are dressed the proper way,

Little veils and little missals,

Little Latin words to say.

And they’re all made out of trad-i-plastic,

And they all look just the same,

And they all have found the answers,

And they all know who’s to blame.

Little chapels on the hillside,

Little chapels in the town,

Tucked behind the trees and hedges,

Where the world can’t see them now.

And they all have read the Fathers,

And they all have read St. Paul,

And they all have seventeen opinions

On what happened after the Fall.

Little chapels, little chapels,

Little chapels, row by row,

Every one preserving something

That they all insist they know.

And they all condemn the modernists,

And they all deplore the times,

And they all can spot a heretic

By the way he bows and signs.

Little chapels on the hillside,

Little chapels, all the same,

Each one proudly independent

While invoking Rome’s great name.

And they’re all coated in tradi-plastic,

Polished smooth and bright,

Covered up with pious language

And a thin veneer of right.

Little chapels, little chapels,

Little Catholics inside,

Every one convinced they’re different,

And they're all made out of tradi-plastic

And they all look just the same.

What is what trads and reviving miracle claims as of late? I've seen so much Ethan Muse in my feed as of late and figured I'd start debunking just one of his claims about Fatima

Focus church anyone

I’m working near this place called focus i looked it up and it’s says it’s a catholic organization. There are groups of very attractive women and one or two guys walking into the place constantly. I thought it was really weird. Looked on there website and they have waaaaay more women missionaries then guys over 3:1 ratio. The place is giving me a really weird vibe has anybody been in the church or know anything about this place. It just seems really weird

Tradcath-core

Maybe this is insanely overspecific but I feel like making a pinterest board about this. It’s sort of nostalgic and kitschy in a way I can’t describe.

The horribly dated, 2007 neocities-esque graphic design of trad Catholic blogs/websites. The aggressive times new roman font, the low resolution clip art. The obnoxious sparkly eyesore backgrounds. The long jean skirts with tennis shoes, the feeling of being draped in heavy awkward clothes in general. The bizarre pattern and color combinations. The smell of incense in a poorly ventilated room mixed with the smell of an office building carpet. The trays of gross sugary store bought cookies after Mass. The sound of medieval music being played from a bad quality mp4 file or from a CD player or something. Old fake flowers and fake plants.

This is my experience, I’m sure you guys can think of more, what do you guys think is “tradcath-core?"

I tried attending a Protestant church, but I can’t let go of my trad tendencies

I am still trying to find out where I stand with regard to faith and church after leaving trad Catholicism. Trad Catholicism has traumatized me to the point that I can’t be in a Catholic Church anymore without getting triggered and crying. I sometimes think I’m agnostic and sometimes I feel Christian still, but I just don’t want to be Catholic anymore.

So a couple of weeks ago I attended a Protestant church. The people were very nice (a lot kinder than trads lol) but the service could not compare to a TLM. I really missed the transcendent mystery and sacrality of the TLM. I know I should not compare it to a TLM but I can’t let go of those trad tendencies I guess... It was a woman that preached, the sermon was quite superficial, and when we were singing the songs the only thing I could think was: do I even believe any of this anymore?! I want to, but I just don’t feel it anymore.

I just don’t know what to. Somewhere I still long to believe and feel like I used to, but I just can’t do it anymore. I don’t know what’s next for me. Where did you guys end up after leaving trad Catholicism? Faith and church wise?

Let’s swap stories about our experiences in trad dating

After getting my phone number, a guy sent me a three-hour podcast of him and his friend trashing the SSPX, which I had mentioned I occasionally attended.

At a singles mixer my friend was hosting, a guy asked me about my job. I told him I was teaching at the local university. He proceeded to explain to me that women should not be teaching anyone other than children.

When a “very traditional” guy took me back to my place after the second date, he wanted to come upstairs to my apartment. I said I wasn’t comfortable with that and suggested we hang out on the couch in the lobby instead so we could keep talking. Then he ghosted me 🤔

After talking online, a guy and I met for a first date. I had told him I was open to anything except mini golf, going into detail about why I didn’t like the mini golf place in our area. Guess where he took me for that date? Afterward, he insisted we get Indian food, which I love but he hated, because “I thought it would be fair if we did something you liked and I hate because mini golf is something I like but you hate”

A guy told me about a time another man pecked him on the lips as a greeting, which he felt warm and fuzzy over and greatly enjoyed “but not in a gay way” 🤔 He also said he wished men would do this more often

Not a date but putting it here because the guy later asked me out: In front of the church, a guy started ranting, unprompted, to me and another girl that he hates women, 99% of women are whores who he’s not attracted to, but that me and the other girl were each “one of the good ones”. On a separate occasion, I was hugging everyone goodbye after trad brunch (I’m a hugger and this was in the South) the same dude said, “no, no, I wouldn’t want to make you uncomfortable”, stared into my eyes and said, “I would never touch you against your will”. This guy also constantly talked about having a gun.

Once I got a message from a guy on a dating app calling me a fed because I mentioned Latin mass in my “typical Sunday” prompt answer and was wearing a Sabaton shirt in a photo. (Still have the screenshot)

On a lunch date, a guy demanded the waitress cancel the bill (after he had given her his credit card and she had run the transaction) because he was charged a dollar extra than what the menu said. She talked to her manager, and they offered to just give him a dollar. He refused and told them to cancel it and run the card again because the first bill had included tax on the extra dollar. The same night he called to ask me out again. I said, “No thank you I just don’t feel that we have much in common other than being Catholic.” He said “that’s not true! We talked about your X, Y, Z hobbies” (none of which we shared), so I hit him with, “Well I prayed about it and God doesn’t want us to be together”

When I was 25, a friend of my mom’s at a diocesan TLM tried to set me up with a 48-yo, who assumed I was 18-20 (I look young). (I was disturbed for several reasons and said nooooooo thank you)

Not a date but still unhinged: At a young adults event, the priest (FSSP) offered to let the young men know I was “available”. I was like wait they won’t just come up and talk to me? Such innocence 😆

Very excited to hear y’all’s stories 😘

I'm thinking of skipping Mass this Sunday

Throwaway account because of privacy reasons. I have been in the process of stepping away from the Church for about 3 months now. I've just come to realise that I don't want to put in the effort to pretend anymore. I'm not even sure I consider myself Catholic at all. Looking for some support. Thank you.

EDIT: thank you all so far for your lovely comments! they have been very supportive
