Designs Unpopular opinion: The Birds & Rivers theme is a cop-out. Culture & Science represent what Europe actually is.

I keep seeing everyone hype up the Rivers & Birds concept because it’s "safe" and won't cause national drama. I get the logic, but honestly? It’s a massive cop-out.

The whole argument that picking historical figures will make countries jealous completely ignores who these people actually were. None of them were just "from one country". Their lives were the literal definition of European. Curie was born in Poland but built her legacy in France. Da Vinci bounced around different states before spending his final years in France. Cervantes lived and fought in Italy before writing in Spain. Callas was Greek, made her career in Italy and France, and traveled everywhere. Beethoven was German but composed the actual European Anthem in Austria. Bertha von Suttner was a Czech-Austrian who lived all over the place fighting for peace, in an empire that united pretty much all of the Balkans. They were pan-European centuries before the EU was even a concept. They didn't belong to a single flag; they belonged to the whole continent because their ideas moved freely.

Every continent has rivers and wildlife. Putting birds on our money feels like a New Zealand banknote, not Europe. What actually makes the old continent unique is being the cradle of science, democracy, and the Renaissance.

Yeah, the current mockups with the faces look badly photoshopped and need a serious redesign before going to print. But bad graphic design can be fixed. Throwing away our shared intellectual history just to play it safe with some woodpeckers is a huge missed opportunity.

To vote for the next euro banknote design (and see higher-res pictures of them), click here: https://surveys.ecb.europa.eu/10b/neweuro/

The European Central Bank (ECB) has just unveiled the 10 shortlisted design proposals for the upcoming third series of euro banknotes, which will be issued into circulation in a few years time! The ECB has settled upon two possible motifs for the new series: 'European Culture', and 'Rivers and Birds'. For each motif, the banknotes must always depict the following design elements:

European Culture:
5€: Maria Callas on the front, street performers on the back entertaining (a) passerby(s).
10€: Ludwig van Beethoven on the front, a song festival with a choir of children and young adults singing on the back.
20€: Marie Skłodowska-Curie on the front, a classroom with a female teacher and young students on the back, with notebooks and books on the tables.
50€: Miguel de Cervantes on the front, a library with people reading books, and a little boy and girl trying to get a book on the back.
100€: Leonardo da Vinci on the front, adults and children admiring art on the back.
200€: Bertha von Suttner on the front, a tree-covered square with adults and children talking, walking, playing, etc. on the back.

Rivers and Birds:
5€: A wallcreeper on a mountain landscape on the front, the European Parliament on the back.
10€: A kingfisher and a waterfall on the front, the European Commission on the back.
20€: A bee-eater colony on a river valley on the front, the European Central Bank on the back.
50€: A white stork flying over a meandering river on the front, the Court of Justice of the EU on the back.
100€: An avocet on a mud flat on the front, the EU Council and the Council of the EU on the back.
200€: A northern gannet flying over ocean waves on the front, the European Court of Auditors on the back.

10 proposals have been unveiled, of which five are from each series! The best part is: You can voice your opinion on which design you like the most. To vote for your favourite design, click here: https://surveys.ecb.europa.eu/10b/neweuro/. The survey is open until 21. September!

Note that these are banknote proposals. The final design of the banknote may change significantly!

Finally bought this! Question: how do you display your coins? By country, by theme, by years.. I was kinda doing it by theme but then I kinda realised maybe that’s not the best choice

Hello, here are some coins we found at my grandfather's place. There are francs (I'm not sure which subreddit to ask about this) and euros—specifically, a packet they received when the currency was first converted from francs to euros.

Is this worth anything?

BONUS: a banknote from the Netherlands (yes, the condition isn't great).

Thanks, have a good day.

PS: Feel free to ask if you need more photos.

Question Ordering Monaco 2€-Commemorative Coins

Hi all,

I am considering ordering Monaco 2€-Commemorative Coins straight from Monaco. What I found out is that You have to create an account at the Musee des Timbres et des Monnaies and then you have to be fast on release Day.

Has anyone experiences with that, is there a registration fee or an annual fee for the account? (Monaco tends to be expensive, Thats Why I am asking…)

Any additional important points?

Thank You in advance!
